Original New York punks Patti Smith and Television will share a stage for the first time since 1977 when they play New York's Roseland Ballroom on Oct. 2.

That's a significant date for Smith, as it's the 135th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, to whom she pays tribute on her latest album, "Trampin' " . . .

R.E.M.'s new album, "Around the Sun," isn't out until Oct. 5, but you can get a sneak preview of the whole thing online -- for free, even -- at MySpace.com. The group will be at MCI Center on Oct. 11 with the Vote for Change tour . . .

Wilco, Air, The Killers, Nellie McKay and Franz Ferdinand are among the 10 finalists for this year's Shortlist Prize, which honors critically acclaimed albums that have sold fewer than 500,000 copies. The nominees and winner will be chosen by a panel that includes Norah Jones, Dixie Chicks, John Mayer, filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and the Cure's Robert Smith. The winner will be announced Nov. 10 in Los Angeles.
