Fletcher's Boathouse Is Open

Sunday, April 10, 2005; Page E04

The Boathouse at Fletcher's Cove is open, and not a moment too soon. Washington's window on the Potomac, where fishing is superb in April and May, changed hands in March when national concessionaire GSI took over from Joe and Ray Fletcher, whose family had run the place since the 19th century.

GSI hired Ray Fletcher and longtime employee Dan Ward to help ready boats, bait, tackle, rental bicycles and canoes before the weather broke and they just made it. With the Potomac still in spring flood, Fletcher's rental rowboats went in the water Thursday and should be available to customers as soon as the river drops to a safe level -- probably early this week.

Meantime, anglers casting from shore last week were catching hickory shad and a few white perch.

Fletcher's temporary number for information is 202-237-1872, but at some point soon GSI hopes to reactivate the old number, 202-244-0461.
