Some smoked salmon products and an intravenous solution often given to patients undergoing heart surgery are being recalled, the Food and Drug Administration said.

The FDA issued a nationwide consumer alert Friday saying that some SeaSpecialties Inc. brand Mama's Smoked Nova Salmon products may be contaminated with listeria, a potentially fatal organism.

In its consumer alert, the FDA identified the product as Mama's Smoked Nova Salmon packaged in 8-ounce, vacuum-packed bags marked "SELL BY SEP 17 2005 27183" and "SELL BY SEP 18 2005 27183." It may also be in shipping cartons labeled "09/17/05 SELL BY 27183" and "09/18/05 SELL BY 27183," the FDA said.

SeaSpecialties listed two products from an earlier recall on its hot line, Mama's brand 4-ounce Sliced Smoked Nova Salmon and Mama's brand 8-ounce Smoked Salmon Nova Snacks. The sell-by date is Aug. 10 this year with code number 31782, the company said.

In the IV solution recall, PharMEDium Services of Houston expanded its recall of "50 ml admixtures of Magnesium Sulfate in 5% Dextrose solution" after a second outbreak of bacteria that may have contaminated the product.

The recall is for all strengths of the solution, the company said in a statement distributed by the FDA.

On March 18, the FDA alerted hospitals that the solution may be contaminated with Serratia marcescens bacteria. Life-threatening illness can result from exposure for patients with compromised immune systems, the FDA said.

The products in the expanded recall are coded 2K2410, 2K2411, 2K2412, 2K2413 and 2K2419.
