Renewed fears of inflation and higher interest rates drove the major stock indexes down last week, even as pharmaceutical companies scored gains.

The Dow Jones industrial average edged down 0.1 percent to close the week at 10,785.22. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index fell 0.34 percent to finish at 1,201.59. The Nasdaq Stock Market composite index dropped 0.87 percent to close at 2,058.62.

Stocks in the Washington region also declined. The Washington Post-Bloomberg regional stock index closed Friday at 263.41, down 1.45 for the week.
