8 Senate Races Key to Democrats' Hopes

South Carolina presents enormous problems for a Democrat in a presidential year, but state Education Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum (D) is nipping at the heels of Rep. Jim DeMint (R) to succeed retiring Sen. Ernest F. Hollings (D). She supports several major conservative initiatives, including the constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.
