The Going Out Gurus: Good afternoon, everyone. As you may have noticed our arts and entertainment sections look different this week. But don't worry, you can still search our database as always, and hopefully more easily find a bunch of new features that you never knew about before. But enough about us.
Thanksgiving is coming up, and we can see you have lots of questions about the holiday weekend. So let's get started pronto. Fritz is out today, jet-setting around Europe, but Anne, Kate, Joe, Rhome, Janet, Alexa, Maura and I (Jen) are here to talk turkey (and by turkey, I mean the new "Cat in the Hat" movie). Here we go.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus - you are great. Please, suggest a good and fun place to have lunch on Saturday. Four friends are coming to town and would like to show them around the Mall and museums. Prefer lunch either in Dupont Circle or Downtown. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Zola in the Spy Museum might impress, but having said that, I don't think it's open Saturday lunch. What, then, about the Pavilion Cafe in the National Gallery's Sculpture Garden. Just last week, they opened the ice rink, so you can have a hot bevvy, a sandwich and watch. -- Alexa.

Deep in the Pentagon, Va.: Greetings GOGs. It's time for a new pair of glasses. But I have a petite face and the search for a pair with personality is as tough as trying to replace a favorite pair of jeans ... Can you recommend any shops with edgy eyewear--no HourEyes schlock please! Will travel anywhere in the area for fine frames!!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Pentagon,
Janet here.

Have you been to See in Georgetown? or Blink? Blink also has locations in Alexandria and downtown.

_______________________

Chevy Chase, Md.: Hi Guys,
Is there anyone showing the Rugby World Cup final this Saturday morning? I know it's the wee hours of the morning, but going to the Army-Navy Rugby match in Conshohocken PA just isn't enough. I don't have cable, so my house is not an option for the final match.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Chevy Chase,

I know that Summers Restaurant in Arlington is showing it live (4 a.m.). The cost is $20. They'll also show a tape of it at 9 a.m. for the same fee. Here's more info. - Joe

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I've been reviewing the Post's Top 10 lists, and wonder if there are any glaring omissions for bars/lounges/places to pickup.

Fritz, where do you hold court?

The Going Out Gurus: Fritz is everywhere and omnipresent. Fritz is always where "da flava is at". Fritz holds court within the hearts of us all.

For real though, that cat is always in the street, how else can we bring you so much info if we played favorites?

And am I the only dense one who doesn't know what lists you're referring to? - Rhome

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Any scoop on when the new restaurant Rosa Mexicano is opening, and what it's going to be like? I ate at the NY original several years ago, and I'm curious what the DC branch will be like.

The Going Out Gurus: To a fellow fan of Rosa Mexicano,
We think it's opening in December, but don't count your guac on it. Not sure what it will be like. We hope it will be more like the one on 59th Street than the one near Lincoln Center.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I have some friends coming in to town and a group of us are all going to see "Mamma Mia!" at the National Theatre. Can you suggest a fun and moderately priced restaurant nearby that can easily accommodate a group of six (or more) people? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: I'm sending you this link, DC. Of the ones closest to the National, I might pick Chef Geoff's. -- Alexa

_______________________

Falls Church, Va.: What's up Gurus?

I'm heading to the White Stripes concert at the Smith Center on Saturday and was wondering what the parking situation there is like, or would it be better to take the Metro?

Thanks. You guys (and gals) are the best.

The Going Out Gurus: Metro is probably a much better bet. Parking isn't terrible in Foggy Bottom, but you could end up driving around for a while. - Joe

_______________________

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: What happened to the Redbox?

The Going Out Gurus: The robotic grocery box McChoked once the parent pulled the plug. Read up.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Ciao wise gurus!
My friend's b-day is coming up and I am looking to get her some music. She is really into Laura Nyro and other singer/songwriter types. Are there any great music stores filled with employees who know music aside from top 40 (i.e. no Best Buy/Barnes & Noble/or anything corporate)? Thanks so much - I know you won't disappoint!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello DC. I've found that the music types at Olsson's usually know their stuff. I know it's a chain, but at least it's a small one and local. DCCD in Adams Morgan has savvy clerks as well. Any one else want to recommend their favorite local record store?? - Joe

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: I was invited to a last minute fancy-dress party. I have a great full-length sleeveless red gown, but it needs a wrap. I don't want to spend lots, but am short on time -- do you have recommendations of shops in the Arlington area? I'll check the malls, but want other options if possible -- thrift shop is OK, too. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, there, Arlington,
Janet speaking. If you can make it to the Textile Museum Shop, that would be my recommendation. Shop stocks wonderful wraps.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Where are the best clubs for hip-hop dancing? I often go to VIP on Friday nights and enjoy it, but I am looking for different clubs to try. Any recommendations?

The Going Out Gurus: For the jiggy: Dream, Home, Platinum (in addition to VIP), the Gardens, 1223

For the non-mainstream: Chief Ike's on Thursdays, Bossa on Thursdays.

For the 'tweeners: Bar Nun on Fridays, Modern on Fridays.

See for yourself!

- Rhome

Fairfax, Va.: Any suggestion for Indian restaurants in Old Town and Georgetown? I love spicy food.

The Going Out Gurus: All I can think of, Fairfax, is Heritage India in upper Georgetown. Am I forgetting somewhere? -- Alexa

_______________________

Washington, D.C., 20001: Hey GOGs! I'm looking for an inexpensive yet trendy, happening place in Bethesda or Rockville that I and a few friends can go get a nice meal and hang out. Any suggestions? Any cuisine is fine.

The Going Out Gurus: Divino Lounge in Bethesda has the right formula -- tapas, live music -- but it might still be hit or miss. Otherwise, try dining at Jaleo down the street. -- Maura

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: My girlfriend wants to go to the movies tonight, but I'd rather see a performance or exhibition live - any suggestions for something in the $15-$25/per person range? I need a winning idea to convince her...

The Going Out Gurus: Here's your opening argument, DC. With your TicketPlace smarts, you're saving gobs off the regular price. Some of the shows that Post reviewers like best have swell discounts, like The Underpants, the Steve Martin-penned comedy. Further down the block, the Studio's Topdog/Underdog, promised to close this weekend, is also discounted through TicketPlace -- only you can't get those online. Good luck. If you go, come back and write your own review of the show. -- Anne

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: I recently moved to DC from Boston. In Boston, there were a few coffeeshops that were low-key, non-bar establishments with pool tables (for example, Diesel in Davis Square). Quiet, cool places where you could get good desserts and just lounge around for hours. Even on a Saturday night. Seems like this entire town turns into a bar on the weekends. Anyplace in DC like that where you can get a game of pool without being in a pool hall or a bar?

The Going Out Gurus: I know we've had a question like this recently and Fritz would be able to do it right off the top. As for myself, I can't disassociate any of my memories of pool in this town from the presence of a bar and brew. Can anyone help out on this one? - Rhome

Failing Friend: Help! For two weeks I have been trying to find a decent restaurant in DC that would sit 16 for a 30th birthday party and have come up blank. Logan Tavern agreed and then called back and canceled the reservation and by then Firefly was booked. Any ideas?

The Going Out Gurus: If you can throw your party on a Sunday-Thursday night, consider the central "community" table at Buck's Fishing & Camping. I attended an especially lovely 30th birthday dinner there recently. Prices were exceptionally reasonable, their menu is broad enough to accommodate vegetarians tho' the sausages are wunderbar and the chocolate cake was exceptionally gorgeous. Small touches allowed the evening to radiate "special occasion."-- Kate

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: My mom is coming to town for Thanksgiving, and we were planning on driving to Baltimore next Saturday and hitting the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Walters Art Museum. I've only been to the Inner Harbor, so I would love any suggestions for a quick lunch and some place for dinner (price range of $20 - $30 per person). Thanks for your help.

The Going Out Gurus: Conveniently enough, you can find a great meal just inside the Baltimore Museum of Art at Gertrude's. Call ahead and see if you can make a reservation though -- it's a busy museum weekend. As for dinner options, check out some recently reviewed Baltimore spots. Readers, care to chime in? -- Maura

Dining at DC Improv?: Hi guys,

I'm planning on taking my boyfriend to the DC Improv next month. Both of us have never been there. Is it better to eat dinner there to get better seats, or book a table somewhere else close by?

The Going Out Gurus: The Improv's menu is California Burrito's. If standard Tex Mex does the trick, you'll be fine. Cafe Asia's glam new downtown location is a short walk away, equally reasonably priced, might be fun. -- Kate

_______________________

Silver Spring, Md.: Hi Gurus,
What do you guys know about Juste Lounge? I've never been and I hear Kid Capri is going to be spinning there tomorrow night. What are your opinions of the place? Thanks!!!

The Going Out Gurus: Tiny spot but on a good run of quality events. Getting a lot of buzz and steady attendance. I picked it this week because I'm betting from their current good rep that it won't be a bamboozlement situation like I've seen in other clubs (pay Mr. Big Drawaz DJ from New York a crapload of money and then his appearance gets cancelled or is incredibly short). It'll either be a sneak attack that only a few folks know about or it'll be a zoo due to the small capacity. Drive by and examine the line out front. - Rhome

In Search of Scandanavian Food, Alexandria, Va.: HELP! My future in-laws are coming from Kansas City next week. My fiance's mother is from Denmark originally and she insists there MUST be a Danish restaurant somewhere in the area ... I have searched your entertainment section and every other DC guide ... but alas, have found no Scandanavian food anywhere. Have I missed something?

If not, can you tell me which of the handful of German restaurants (fiance's Dad is German) has (1) most authentic food and (2) best selection of beer! We've found the food at Cafe Monti excellent. The atmosphere? Not so much.

Many thanks, Gurus!

The Going Out Gurus: No, the Monti isn't rich in atmosphere. But it is delice. Scandinavian? I'm certain that this pristine cuisine is going to be the next big thing. But for now, I'm afraid, it's the IKEA meatball platter for you. And then, of course, Cafe Mozart. -- Alexa

Mt Pleasant lookin' for manicures...: I'd like to give someone a holiday gift of a manicure/pedicure. Does anyone know of a good but not-so-pricy place in the Tyson's or Herndon area? Thanky!

The Going Out Gurus: ISO manicures,
Try Nails for You.

_______________________

Glover Park, Washington, D.C.: Need your help GOGs. I want to mat and frame a picture on the cheap, but I want it to look really good. So I was thinking I would buy a mat at the art store and take the picture and the mat to a frame shop. Will the shops go for that? Any recommendation for a less-expensive shop that would be ok with my plan? Anywhere in the city is fine.

The Going Out Gurus: I'm not sure finer framers will let you bring in your own matting. But, if you're aiming for on the cheap, try a frame-it-yourself shop. You can pick out the matting and do the frame on your own. I have seen these in other cities, so there must be one around here. Janet knows of one in Potomac Village. Anyone know others? -- Maura

_______________________

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: Submitting early due to lack of email access at work ... I'm going to propose to my girlfriend tomorrow night, and I already have the restaurant picked out. Any ideas for a laid back place in or close to my area (19th and Florida, NW) for an after-dinner drink? I'm thinking upscale, and definitely with well-dressed patrons.

Muchas gracias!

The Going Out Gurus: Wow, neighbor, this is great news. There's really nothing in our hood that does this occasion justice. If I were going to pick a spot for a celebratory drink in sumptuous surroundings I'd cab it to the Willard's Round Robin Bar. You can have champers by the glass tonight -- and 50 years from now. It's a classic. If you really must be at in the 'hood, the bar at Perry's is beautifully lit, well stocked. They don't take reservations but if you called ahead, perhaps they'd grow a heart and save you a romantic couch near a window. -- Kate

Washington, D.C. 20009: Hello,

Is there any sense in shopping for X-mas this weekend, or will all the sales start after Thanksgiving?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey, Washington,
Janet here. I'd say it really depends. If it's worth it to you to avoid the crowds, then by all means, buy it now. Do you think the items you want are going to go on sale after Thanksgiving? If so, I'd wait.

Alexandria, Va.: I am new in this area. Can you tell me name of the best movie theater/s in the DC Metro Area ? I like big screen and very good sound quality. Please do not include IMAXs in your list.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Alexandria. There are a number of good theaters in the area. I can't name all of them, but ones that come to mind immediately are: the Uptown, though they're sometimes slow about changing films (still, huge screen and good sound); the AFI Silver; the Cinema in D.C. ... there are tons more. Try searching for editor's picks in movie theaters and you'll find a bunch. -- Jen

_______________________

Arlington, Va., by way of the NJ Turnpike: I should probably just break down and get HBO, but do you know anyplace that plans to show "The Sopranos" on Sunday nights when the new season starts?

The Going Out Gurus: We've not been tipped off yet. I'm sure Fritz will post it in This Week in Nightlife, if and when he finds the tony spots for Tony fans. -- Kate

_______________________

Fairfax, Va.: Hiya!
I was wondering if you happened to know a place in the NoVa area to get fresh salt water taffy? Kind of odd I know, but I have an old friend that it would be a good gift for. Thanks

The Going Out Gurus: There must be a general store that sells candy. Perhaps Bruce's Variety would work? You could always order online. Readers, let's hear from you on this challenge. -- Anne

_______________________

Fairfax, Va.: What's the deal on the second anniversary party at Dream this Saturday night? I was there last weekend and as I was leaving someone handed me an invitation to the party (in a Thomas Pink box...very classy!). It gives the details and says it's an invitation for two. What I'm wondering is, does having this invite mean anything? Did they give it out to tons of people? Will it let me get in free, skip the line, or anything? I'm wondering what the party will be like, and whether I should really get there at 8:00.

Thanks! You guys are awesome, by the way!

The Going Out Gurus: I haven't seen anything on the various listservs. My guess is that it'll be more of what makes Dream the choice destination that it is now: Beautiful people, pageantry and serious partying (and $$$).

Looking at the website, there's a different anniversary listing for Friday ("black night") and Saturday ("white night and other folks that aren't black"). Seems like your invite is specific to that night's promoter, which means it probably was given out to tons of people. Your best bet is to follow the instructions on it to the letter and don't get your expectations up. Getting in free and skipping the line is not a privilege that is given out lightly at a spot like Dream. It's just understood that if you're trying to ease the wallet hit, you have to get in early. - Rhome

_______________________

Metro Center, Washington, D.C.: Is there an opening act for Rufus Wainwright at the Lisner tonight? Or is it just him because of their weird early-curtain rule?

Thanks -- you guys are awesome.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Rufus's sister, Martha Wainwright, is the opener. I (Jen) will be there, too -- looking forward to it.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Mine and my husband's parents and brothers are coming to town for Thanksgiving weekend. We have reservations at 15 Ria for dinner (yum!) but haven't made any other plans yet. They've seen the basic stuff (monuments, important government buildings), so I'm looking for suggestions of other good activities -- museum exhibits, etc. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Washington. There are some stunning special exhibits worth catching and most are right on the Mall. Even if they've been to the National Gallery before, stop in again for Picasso, Romare Bearden and French frills. Next door at Natural History, the new mammal hall needs to be seen to be believed. I loved the Whistler show at the Freer -- a small installation, but I could linger there for hours. And don't forget Anne Frank's writings at the Holocaust Museum. It's their first display in the U.S. and only lasts a few more weeks.-- Maura

_______________________

Old Town, Va.: Looking for a great way to round out my Saturday. Dinner at Tenpenh, followed by who knows what, then proposing. What's downtown, swanky, and a fun way to celebrate before the big event?

The Going Out Gurus: Well, it depends on whether you know what the answer is going to be? Do you have to get good and liquored up beforehand? How're you going about this? We're all interested.

_______________________

Awkward Office Party: We are having a pot-luck Christmas party. What should I bring? I want it to be memorable. (And I'm not submitting to the food chat as I don't want to bring herb-crusted salmon ... I want it to be much more fun!)

The Going Out Gurus: I'm afraid my chum Kim O.D. and I agree -- there's really no potluck Christmas party without a herb-crusted salmon. However, if you really do want me to buck tradition, I might suggest a huge, glamorous and colorful antipasti platter that you could cheat with if you wished. Some suggestions for what that platter might include: bruschette with goat or olives say? Marinated anchovies? Blistered peppers, semi-hard boiled eggs with an eggcup of good crunch salt and cracked pepper, a centerpiece of chicken liver pate? I know you're loving this idea... -- Alexa

_______________________

Indian recommendations: As for Old Town, I am not a big fan of the Indian restaurant on King Street, but not to far away in Del Ray (on Mt. Vernon Ave.) is the delicious Bombay Curry Company. They have really yummy tandoori chicken wings!;

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, the Bombay is nice. Just not so atmospheric.

_______________________

Bethesda, Md.: Hey kids-- I could normally find this out myself but I'm having some trouble with the new WP web site so I need your expert help...

I'm planning on seeing some college friends who are split between the DC/Bethesda, Frederick, and Baltimore areas. We're thinking of meeting up Friday night in a central location -- maybe Columbia? Probably a late dinner where we can hang around afterwards for drinks. Something fun and reasonably priced -- any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, thanks for writing us. First off, here's some restaurants in Columbia -- see what type of cuisines interests you, then click on Maps and Directions to help all your friends get there. If you ever have trouble using the site, we hope you'll e-mail us and let us know specifically what the problem was, so we can steer you in the right direction. -- Anne

Washington, D.C., 20007: Hello,

Are you still thinking of doing the wedding chat? I have a nuptials question. I am looking for a bakery that can make me a teeny wedding cake, for like 10 people. I've been to Patisserie Poupon, but they don't custom make cakes. Any suggestions? Preferably in DC. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, the wedding chat is definitely taking shape. It'll debut in 2004 in "January" white but we need to do some homework in advance.

As for the cake: Alexa suggests a small and a large strawberries and cream cake from Fresh Fields, one on top of the other. I would encourage you to call Pastries by Randolph. I have been astonished by what this trad tried and true bakery in Arlington is capable of producing. Also Amernick, Dean & DeLuca or your favorite restaurant. I had a forkful of cake from of all place, the Tabbard Inn recently and it was dynamite. Hotels and restaurants that regularly host weddings are other good bets too. Failing a true mini wedding cake, I once made a "wedding cake" out of round hat boxes and filled the layers with gingerbread brides and grooms, an idea I nicked from a beautifully creative bride named Amy. It was a hoot to make in advance and charming too. -Kate

Re: Live Performances: A friend and I saw "The Underpants" last Friday. It was absolutely hysterical and the house was full. It's only an hour and a half long, so it's a perfect way to start the evening. We hit St. Ex after for some drinks since it is right next door. I recommend checking it out.

The Going Out Gurus: I see London, I see France.

Sounds like a grand night, cheers!

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hey,
I want to do something fun on Saturday night with a girl I'm dating but I'm totally drawing a blank. Don't want to do the dinner and movie thing cause it's kind of lame and we've completely OD'ed on shows at The Black Cat. Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: Go dancing to some music you don't normally listen to. Read this week's picks for Saturday. Have dinner then hit Video Americain for something off the wall. Troll around in our calendar for events on Saturday. Go see a show that isn't at the Black Cat. Maybe the Scratch tour at 9:30 Club? I'm just being random because I don't know what your interests are. - Rhome

_______________________

Gobble, Gobble: What are the best restaurant bets for prix fixe Thanksgiving dinners? Looking for something that won't break the bank, but will have all the yummy trimmings we'll be missing out on since we're not traveling home this year.

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Dear Gobble. Have you seen this handy link? It does not tell you about set menus, but most places offer one.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I am in search of a bar that is Michigan-fan friendly in the DC area for the Saturday Ohio-Michigan game. Can you help?

The Going Out Gurus: I'm kicking this one straight to the class. College football isn't what I know. Will not another chatter with Michigan in their heart help this (wo)man? - Rhome

_______________________

Proposing: This is just my personal opinion, and I am a shy girl who was proposed to in her living room, but what say those two who wrote in propose before dinner? Then they can have the glow of love all night long, and can tell everyone that they just got engaged..It will make the guy less nervous too.

The Going Out Gurus: Ok, we're starting to get proposal tips. Excellent. We should devote an entire chat to this topic.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: I'm a local Hill staffer always looking for a good deal / free meal.

I hear that the Banana Cafe's piano bar has some special like free appetizers on a certain day of the week. Do you know which day this special takes place and what kind of free food they offer?

The Going Out Gurus: Who can solve the mystery and make a new addition to our intern guide when we update it? - Rhome

_______________________

Gaithersburg, Md.: I am looking for a great, unique gift for bridesmaids gifts? My wedding isn't until next fall, but I was thinking I might be able to get a really nice present now that may be on sale. (Maybe something I could not normally afford.) Any hints? Places I may want to look at?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, there,
Janet here. I can always find unusual things at Proper Topper. There's also a location in Georgetown. Another place to try is Zaidee Coco. There's one in Reston, too.

_______________________

Washington, D.C. : Went to the Russian Room last night (after being rejected from Bistro de Coin until midnight) and some event was going on. People had on name tags. Lots of older men and young women. It seemed scandalous. Do you know what the event was? I am dying to know.

The Going Out Gurus: Must have been "Ashton and Demi" night. Or "Tailhook II: Cold War Warm Hearts." How did you not ask??

I just called and asked and it was a private happy hour -- according to their reservation book. Sneaky old me, hmm?

The Russia House can be a feast for people watchers with a taste for wodka. It attracts conventioneers from the nearby hotels (sometimes wearing name tags) as well as nightowls, neighbors, Dupontians. -- Kate

Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.: This weekend, my brothers (ages 27 and 31) are coming into town from Boston to visit me, their little sister. Any suggestions of local events or things to do this Sunday in DC? They are not museum types, so the Smithsonians are out of the question - although I may try and push the Spy museum and get us advance tickets. Suggestions much appreciated! Thanks

The Going Out Gurus: The Spy Museum might be a good bet, Capitol Hill. There was no line outside of the museum when I went by early last Sunday afternoon. They'll enjoy it for the Aston Martin alone. If not a museum, stop by Iota Sunday afternoon for the Alejandro Escovedo Benefit Concert -- a great lineup for a good cause. -- Maura

_______________________

McLean, Va.: Hey gurus,
Looking for something romantic/stylish/fun to do after dinner in the District this Tuesday the 25th ... I'm thinking a fancy place to get a drink, jazz music, maybe a little dancing (but not a club/packed bar type scene). Any thoughts? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Chi-Cha should do ya. - Rhome

_______________________

More White Stripes (and karma): Hey Joe, i've never been to the Smith Center...any idea about the general admission policy for an arena with seating? do you think just the floor will be open? And, because it is on campus, I'm assuming that means no beer sales? And Fritz, what's the word on the new bar/coffee shop, Karma, on 19th and Eye? Signs says it's supposed to open this fall.
got the scoop?

thanks guys!
happy (early) turkey days.

The Going Out Gurus: Just got off the phone with the Smith Center folks. The show is general admission for the entire arena. So, those who get there early will get closest to the stage. Of course, you'll have to stand around forever, but it should be worth the wait. And, yes, no beer or alcohol will be sold.

No scoop for you on karma, unfortunately. - Joe

Alexandria, Va.: Framing: go to any Total Crafts store. They have so many framing supplies there and if the pic is an odd size you can buy frame kits in many different styles. Just go see!

The Going Out Gurus: If the frame fits....Thanks, Alexandria.

_______________________

Proposing...: I agree with the other person about proposing before dinner. My finance proposed to me before dinner (he did fly me to South Beach and asked on the beach). He actually didn't show any nerves until we went to a bar beforehand to have a predinner drink. He downed his gin and tonic in about 10 seconds, so I knew something was up. I don't know if he would have made it through dinner if he didn't ask before hand. It was also nice to enjoy the experience the entire night and talk about wedding/future stuff over dinner.

The Going Out Gurus: Another vote for before dinner!

Bethesda, Md.: For Maura: Last week someone asked about a gallery in Bethesda with great sangria. That would be Fraser Gallery! We serve sangria (instead of cheap white wine) at openings in both the Georgetown and Bethesda galleries. We also serve pretty good art!

Look for our Sangria recipe soon in the Sunday Source.

Lenny

The Going Out Gurus: There's our answer. Thanks, Lenny!

Washington, D.C.: I'd pick Cashion's over Perry's any day for an after proposal drink. Much more intimate bar, better lighting, great bar staff, etc.

The Going Out Gurus: No way. Too many silver foxes sitting atop stools. And you couldn't sit side by side even if you could snag a lil' round table. And above all, my last drink at Cashion's (last Saturday night) left me smelling of "deep fryer." Now that Perry's is under new management, it's well worth checking out. Cozy and not too noisy. -- Kate

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Is there any place that serves a pumpkin martini? It's like the very best way to celebrate pre-Thanksgiving!!!

The Going Out Gurus: Maggiano's Little Italy serves a giant pumpkin martini with cinnamon sugar around the rim. It's bright orange, definitely big enough for two. -- Kate

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Earlier this week, I saw an ad in the Post for a vintage posters show. I now can't find the ad. I thought the show was coming up this weekend. Do you have any information to share? Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Washington, the vintage poster show is at Renaissance Fine Arts in the Wildwood Shopping Center on Old Georgetown Road (Bethesda). Call 301-564-4447 for details. If you're looking for something on the more bargain end of the poster bin, you might try the Georgetown Book Shop on Bethesda Avenue between Woodmont and Wisconsin. I strolled by last weekend and it looked like they had some interesting stuff. Good luck. -- Maura

D.C.- Re; Frame-it-yourself: check out graphicimagaes.com-- frames and mats that you mix and match yourself, cut to size, then they ship it out and you put everything together on your own. way cheaper than going to a frame shop i have found.

The Going Out Gurus: Lots of framing answers on the way. Thanks.

Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.: For the framer... Frame of Mind on Barracks Row has always been great for me! They allow you to either have them do it or do it yourself, and have good prices.

The Going Out Gurus: More frames.

Washington, D.C.: Can Rhome run through the current weekly hip hop nights in DC real quick? Native Tongues style, not 50 Cent, if possible.

PS-How hype is the lineup at the 9:30 on new year's day? Little Brother, J Live and PR/CL? Yikes.

The Going Out Gurus: We get this question like every month. It's hard to keep that old round-up I had updated though because stuff vanishes as soon as we write it up.

Currently...

Chief Ike's and Bossa on Thursdays, South Beach on Saturdays for dj/dancing oriented nights.

Ben N Mo on Sundays and U-Turn on Saturdays for local live performances.

You're looking at the line-up for the second Okayplayer tour and you're asking ME if it's hot? "What you on hops, dope or dog food?" (c) Big Daddy Kane, who destroyed the stage on the last tour

Re.: eyeglass frames and festive wraps: I second the suggestion to Blink - it's on the pricey side, but they have a large assortment of funky, edgy, cool and unique frames - I know of three locations: G-town, 18th Street, and Alexandria.

For the person look for a fancy wrap, you should go to Loehmann's and check out the deals there.

The Going Out Gurus: Janet here. I concur about Loehmann's. They do have a nice selection of wraps as well as scarves and gloves, too.

McLean, Va.: Hey Gurus... if anyone can help me, I'm sure it is you! I'm looking for any restaurants that are very dog friendly, besides the Alexandria Holiday Inn. I know many places don't mind dogs outside, but I'm interested for places that you can bring the dog inside!

I was thinking that maybe Lost Dog Cafe might be, and I also heard that Whitlows was dog friendly, but haven't seen it for myself.

Thanks so much!

The Going Out Gurus: Sorry, it's a health code issue, and that's why you won't find a restaurant that will let you bring your dog inside. The Lost Dog Cafe wishes dogs could come in, but they can't. The only dogs inside there are the decorations. Your best choice is a low-key restaurant with outdoor seating. And then, for a treat, SweetLicks is a tiny ice cream counter, where I have seen dogs walk in and lick the doggie ice cream out of their own bowl. -- Anne

Washington, D.C.: For a great German restaurant, go to Old Europe in Glover Park. She'll thrill at the food, live music, and costumes, while you can enjoy the fabulous kitschiness!

The Going Out Gurus: Some German faves rolling in...

Fairfax, Va.: Hi,

Which is the best ice cream shop in DC Metro area ? (Home made or regular.)

Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Survey says: Maggie Moo's. We like Del Ray Dreamery.

German Restaurant: For authenticity, you can't beat Cafe Berlin on the Hill. Atmosphere is OK, kinda lodge-y inside.

The Going Out Gurus: and more...

Answers and a question: Frame-it-yourself - there's one on the block next to the Tenleytown Metro

Indian in Georgetown - Amma Vegetarian Kitchen and Aditi (though I prefer Heritage, too)

I'm visiting a friend who moved from DC to NYC next week - what can I bring her to remind her of "home?"

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks!

And as for your question, why not stop by Eastern Market and pick up a little something. It doesn't need to say "Washington," but it might be a fun find.

Oh, and bring a pack of Teaism's salty oat cookies. -- Maura

Washington, D.C.: Gurus.... do you happen to recall where I could pick up those cups that were in the Sunday Source that have the bottle openers in the bottom?!? I know someone who would love these for Xmas. I think there was a Web site and a local store that had them, the Web site would be preferred.

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Washington,
Here you go: Home Rule and TD Adventurer were the places mentioned.

Washington, D.C.: Hey Jen:
Did you solve the mystery of the on-again/off-again Club Cinema at Friendship Heights?

The Going Out Gurus: No, I haven't yet. But I will -- I promise!

K Street, Washington, D.C.: Re: Do it yourself frames - Check out Framer's Workshop, near the Tenleytown metro the staff is very helpful. Plus the frames aren't too pricey.

The Going Out Gurus: Framer's Workshop seems popular.

Washington, D.C.: Hey Gurus!
Need an idea for celebrating a 30th Birthday Party and/or place to have one. Looking for something like a lounge that has music (jazz) or some other type of entertainment. A relaxed, fun atmosphere where food (a meal or light refreshments) is served and a possible private area to serve cake and sing happy birthday.

The Going Out Gurus: Newly updated.

For you!

Proposing: My husband did it after dinner while taking a strole through DC. We actually fought that week and at dinner b/c of how nervous he had been knowing he was going to ask. His proposal definitely would not have been as great or special had he done it before dinner (the spot of the proposal was significant) I think this guy should go w/ his plans and propose whenever it feels like the right time--before, during, or after dinner!; Best wishes!;

The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, he should probably stick to his original plan. But we like suggestions anyway.

Re: Favorite Local Record Store: Melody Records in Dupont is awesome...they have everything!;

The Going Out Gurus: Yup, Melody is a good one too. Thanks.

Washington, D.C.: For DC Improv: Just remember that there is usually a food/drink minimum, so if you dine somewhere else you'll still be expected to buy a few drinks at the club.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, this is an important distinction and I apologize for not mentioning it sooner. The Improv has a "two item" minimum per person. This smacks of New Math as it's any too items: two beers, two steak burritos, a beer and a burrito, and arguably two Cokes. -- Kate

Washington, D.C.: Hi Gurus!
I really hope you can help me with this. This is more of a question for the "Got Plans with Kids" chat, but there was none yesterday.
I'm going to be traveling next week with my boyfriend, his brother, sister-in-law, 7 yr. old nephew and 2 yr old niece to NY for Thanksgiving.
We'll be taking the bus and I'm thinking of giving the kids something small to play with and keep them occupied over the 4 hours.

I am thinking a coloring book for the 7 yr. old would work (please tell me if that's too young or too old), but how about for a 2 year old? (Goes to show how much I know about kids!)

Thanks a lot!!

The Going Out Gurus: That's thoughtful of you, DC. Call me a cynic, but the 7-year-old may show up with a Gameboy of some type, and could busy himself that way. If not, a simple book, maybe a joke book, would engage him. Or, if reading in the car doesn't work, a magazine with lots of pictures of his interest, be it soccer or surfing, is a good distraction. The two-year-old won't stay occupied for long, regardless. But some crayons and paper are sure to be appreciated. -- Anne

Washington, D.C.: I recently heard about a social network of Washingtonians with ties to California. Supposedly they have a Web site. As a California-raised Washingtonian, I'd like to find out more. Do you guys know anything about this? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: You must be thinking of the California State Society. Hurry up and join soon, their Holiday Party is Dec. 3 at the U.S. Botanic Gardens. -- Kate

Washington, D.C.: Hi gurus!
I need a suggestion for tomorrow night (Friday). A nice club in Adams Morgan where we can dance (possibly not techno or house music) and that is not very expensive!

Thanks!

Alessandra

The Going Out Gurus: Adams Morgan is a zoo on weekends so most places are packed, but of course there a lot of options. Bukom for reggae. Rumba Cafe for latin. It's tiny but you'll spend less money than at Habana Village. - Rhome

GO BLUE!: I'll be watching Michigan beat OSU at a friend's house, but I know the Michigan Alumni Association meets at Politiki and Tommy Joe's. You might be able to find some people at Gorden Biersch as well because they were an official U of M location last year. I've only been to Tommy Joes and Gorden... TJ's had a nice friendly crowd, Gorden gave me 3 huge complimentary beers.

GO BLUE!

The Going Out Gurus: Aw yeah.

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: Anybody know of any place where a girl can get a chicken fried steak?

The Going Out Gurus: Yeah! With gravy!

The Going Out Gurus: As usual, kids, we've run out of time. We'll be spending next week stuffing our faces with pumpkin pie, so plan to meet us back here in two weeks. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.
