Got Plans?

Entertainment Guide Staff
washingtonpost.com
Thursday, July 15, 2004; 1:00 PM

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Submit your questions and comments before or during the discussion.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

The Going Out Gurus: Hola, everyone. We're running a little late, so let's get started. Our operators are standing by and waiting to answer your questions.

I-Spy cubeland: Hey Gurus,

How are the lines for the Spy Museum these days? I was thinking of taking my parents this weekend and had been planning to buy tickets in advance, but they're notorious for their inability to get somewhere on time. Should I chance it with the line, or just tell them to be there an hour earlier than they need to be? I was thinking around 3 on either Saturday or Sunday if that helps. Thanks!;

The Going Out Gurus: Last I looked there were still lengthy weekend lines. If you're looking to avoid them, I'd order those tickets in advance. Maybe some readers have noticed Spy Museums lines lately?

No promises, but in my experience ticketholders at museums are usually let in any time after their ticket entry time. So if the folks are running a little late, I wouldn't worry. -- Maura

Old Town Alexandria, Va.: Love your chats! Ok, here's the plea...I'm planning a date night for my husband's birthday on Sat. in Georgetown. We live in Old Town, but I'm planning on taking one of the Potomac River boats over to G'town for the evening (romantic w/o drinky/drivey + cheaper than a cab). He loves sushi - do you have any reccos within walking distance from the waterfront once we get there?

The Going Out Gurus: I can't think of sushi down there, but I can think of dumplings -- at Bangkok Joe's. Would that suit? -- Alexa

Potomac, Md.: My ultimate frisbee team is planning a post-game social. We're looking for a place that we can drink beer and eat and be stinky a short drive from the smithsonian mall area.

The Going Out Gurus: Hey Potomac, I'm throwing this one out to the peanut gallery. For food you can always hit the hot dog cart or bring your own picnic, but unfortunately the park police don't allow beer (or other alcoholic beverages) in public areas. There aren't any restaurants in that area that I know of that would welcome a bunch of sweaty, stinky athletes (rank discrimination, I know). However, lots of athletes read our chat, so let's find out what their suggestions are. Chime on in guys. Lynette

College Park, Md.: I was reading another chat yesterday, and someone was complaining about the Nissan Paviliion. Specifically, they said they were going to have to leave home at 3 for an 8PM show, and that they expected it to take hours to get home after the show ended. And then to top it off you're not even allowed a blanket to sit on on the grass, never mind food or a bottle of wine like you're allowed at Wolf Trap. Can it really be that bad? If it is, why does anyone go there?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, it can really be that bad. Why do people go there? That's a tougher one to answer. People are masochists? People enjoy hours of stop-and-go traffic? People love the word Nissan? The real reason is that's where the music is and the choice is to take it or leave it.

Washington, D.C. baby, yeah!: Posting early because I am a slave to my job. I just moved into my own place and I do not have any furniture to speak of. I searched around the Washington Post site trying to find last year's ?best bets' but it looks like they have been taken off the Web so as not to sway this years results.

Here's the question: I am looking for moderately priced, yet solidly built furniture that is very versatile. My new space is only a studio so everything will need to double as something else. My couch needs to pull out into a bed, my bookshelf needs to be a wall, etc? Do you have any recommendations? Please don't say Ikea, I can't stand people knowing where my stuff comes from.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, there, D.C.,
Here's a link to last year's Best Bets. Sorry, but last year, people voted Ikea as number one for home furnishings. I don't know what your budget is, but Urban Essentials is a good place to look, as are all the furnishings stores along 14th Street.

Washington, D.C. : Gurus,

I know the pedicure question has been well covered, but I have a slight twist to it today. I would like to get a pedicure over the lunch hour. I work in L'Enfant Plaza. I am looking for a place within a few Metro stops, and am not interested in the shop in the Plaza. Any suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: How big is your budget? The spa at the Mandarin Oriental is geographically desirable, but the pedicure there will set you back $65. Probably would be divine.

Washington, D.C.: I keep up with this discussion on a regular basis and have noticed a question that is repeatedly asked. It seems as if whites often want to know if they will be out of place somewhere if there are lots of minority people. I find it interesting that I've never seen in this discussion, a person of color asking if they will be out of place at some club or bar even though we are in this position far more often than whites even in a city like DC. Most of the places I like are predominantly white (except on specific theme nights). You would think I'd be more uncomfortable than I am when I, as a black woman, walk into some upscale hotel bar that Fritz has recommended, all by myself. Are white people really that uncomfortable being in the minority?

The Going Out Gurus: I'll try not to set this off into a sociological debate that spirals out of control but the answer is really quite simple. If you're used to being in the majority and always surrounded by folks that are similar to you, it's going to be more jarring (or just unfamiliar) to experience the opposite. When you're in the majority, you don't really experience the other side unless you make an effort. You can generally coast through and never be taken out of your comfort zone. Now for someone like Fritz, having gone to Suitland high school, this is not an issue. Being a minority means that if one wants to function at a basic level in the world around them, one doesn't have a choice whether or not one engages with those outside their culture/ethnicity/nationality, so one gets used to it.

Lecture over now. - Rhome

Crystal City, Va.: What is the best place in Arlington or DC to purchase discounted alcohol? I'm providing a pineapple vodka punch for a 25th birthday party and need to get 30-40 in semi-lush state. Also, any good store recs for where to buy that perfect present for an ab-fab 25 year old woman (who fears turning a quarter of a century old)?

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, there,
Resident guru of nightlife (Fritz) says check the Food section on Wednesdays for deals on discounts on liquor. As for your fab friend, it's hard to recommend without knowing her taste. How about a facial?

Penn Quarter, Washington, D.C.: Good (Sunny!) Afternoon Gurus! A girlfriend and I are taking in our first "Third Thursday" this evening. What can we expect, please? Thanks so much!

The Going Out Gurus: I haven't been in a while, PQ, so I can't predict the crowds. With the good weather, I'd think there'd be a nice turnout. Either way, it's a great time to go though -- there are terrific shows to see. Be sure to check out Nikki S. Lee's "Parts and Projects" at the Numark and Ami Martin Wibur's new show at Flashpoint. See the full schedule here. -- Maura

Arlington, Va.: Restaurant Week is coming up again, and I wanted some suggestions on places that really are a good deal. Any suggestions???

The Going Out Gurus: Yes folks, Restaurant Week rolls around again on July 26 and here's the list of participants. At this point, so many restaurants take part that it's extremely hard to say who's doing the best deal. I suggest flying by the seat of your pants, picking a place you've always wanted to go but haven't, and expect the best. -- Alexa

Arlington, Va.: I have found vague references to the Shirlington Film Festival, which is showing "Pirates of the Caribbean" this Thursday. Know it starts at 8:30 - and is free - but what else is there to know? Where is it exactly? What will seating be like? Who's organizing it?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Here's a more specific reference to the Village at Shirlington Movies Under the Stars. Other things to know: Bring lawn chairs. It's being organized by Federal Realty. The screen will be set up on 28th St. near Charlie Chiang's restaurant. And if it rains, the screening will be canceled and not rescheduled. -- Jen

_______________________

Clifton, Va.: I'm from the West Coast and I miss swimming in fresh water lakes and rivers.

What are some nice, safe and fairly close areas to swim near D.C.?

The Going Out Gurus: Hey Clifton, try the Hammerman area of Gunpowder Falls State Park or go to Colonial Beach, Va, which has swimming on the Potomac. Cunningham Falls State Park also has swimming in the park's small lake, although the beach there does tend to get crowded. Another option might be Lake Anna State Park. Lynette

Arlington, Va.: Hi Gurus! I've got tickets to see Jill Scott at the 9:30 Club on 7-23, and I've never been there before. How can a group of 4 increase our chances of getting decent seats near the stage (since the tickets are general admission)? How early should we show up? Basically how does the seating work? Many thanks for answering this question!

The Going Out Gurus: Hello Arlington,
Here's the thing about the 9:30: there are no seats. So you will be standing for this show (or sitting on the ground while everyone around you is standing). If you want to be able to stand very close to the stage, you should arrive at the club when the doors open, but you'll have to be prepared to stand around for a few hours. There is a balcony at the club and you can see pretty well from up there, but again, you'll still be standing. So wear comfortable shoes. That's the best advice we can give you.
- Joe

Bethesda, Md.: Rhome -- Go-Go at the Strathmore? What's going on ... I saw Chuck Brown there last night and had a blast. It was a welcomed surprise to Montgomery County!

The Going Out Gurus: How'd we miss this? Brotha Chuck is going to be crankin' long into the afterlife, that's for sure. Wind me up, Chuck! Let me find out the Strathmore is trying to psyce it up. - Rhome

Washington, D.C.: I bought an old sewing machine at a garage sale recently and was wondering if there's anywhere I can go to learn to sew? I'm looking for classes to go to in DC or close to a Metro. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: G Street Fabrics has several locations and they do offer classes. Also, at the end of August the Home section of the paper publishes its comprehensive course list.

Book Club?: My friend and I are looking to expand our circle of friends and thought a book club might be a good way to do it. However, we know nothing about book clubs. How does one go about finding and joining one? Do you just start calling bookstores or is there more of an organized way of doing it? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: You could try calling your friendly neighborhood bookstore, but most book clubs I know of have come together through friends, friends of friends and friends of friends of friends. I often think a book club is better on a smaller scale. One of the best I ever joined was a mere four people.

You could also try message boards. I'm sure this has been done before on Craig's List. Just give people some idea of what types of books you might be reading, if you can. -- Maura

Studio Furniture: Not sure how your chatter feels about, ahem, gently used furniture, but I've found Craigslist to be a great resource. It seems a lot of folks use the site to sell their studio-sized furniture when they move up to something bigger.

The Going Out Gurus: For the studio-size furniture seeker, here's a source to check.

Washington, D.C.: Your first-time Nissan Pavillioner here, reporting back from my excursion last week:

So I was paranoid and made everyone leave DC at 3pm for at 6pm show (DMB didn't really start til 8:30 or so)...didn't hit any traffic, got there around 4, stopped at the lovely 7-11 that's a few miles away from the venue, got ourselves a case of beer, and had a fun boozy time before the concert started. It took us forever to get out of the parking lot afterwards (an hour), but once we hit 66E it was smooth sailing. All in all, it wasn't as hellacious as I had feared, but without the Gurus I might have tried to roll in at 7 p.m. and been sorely disappointed. Thanks guys!

(And to the previous poster--you CAN bring blankets to sit on, though you have to defer to them for food and beverage)

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks for reporting back DC. Sounds like you planned well (though we're not sure about drinking a case of beer and driving home, but we'll trust that a non-drinker was at the wheel).

Barn Tours:
We've taken a recent interest in old barns, noticed a couple very cool ones while sitting in various traffic jams recently.

Is there a map of old barns, or a tour of barns that anyone has ever heard of? Maybe in Loudoun County.

jj

The Going Out Gurus: Wow, JJ, this one's a stumper. Loudoun County does have a historic preservation group (phone 703-777-0246) that might be able to help you. Otherwise, let's ask our other chatters and see what they have to suggest. What does anynoe know about old barns worth visiting, or barn tours you'd recommend? Lynette

Dupont, Washington, D.C.: I'm looking for a good lunch spot near Dupont for a 4 to 6 person group from work. I'm trying to impress and am hoping for a nicer, even pricier (but not priciest) place. The group has been to most of the obvious places around (the Palm, Sam & Harry's, Levante, David Greggory, Fin). What am I missing? Thanks all knowing know-it-alls, you rule.

The Going Out Gurus: Johnny's Half Shell (no reservations) is nice for lunch. Firefly? The new Greek place, Mourayo? Those are my picks. -- Alexa

_______________________

Georgetown, Washington, D.C.: I plan on going down to Live on Penn for the first time this Saturday. Galactic is gonna rage and I'm gonna have a beer, but do you know how much I am going to have to pay for that beer? Are they typical DC $4 Bud Lights, or are they the more acceptable $3.25 Arlington version?

The Going Out Gurus: Hope you weren't counting on that Bud Light, Georgetown. Miller Lite is one of the big sponsors of Live on Penn, and they have the beer monopoly there. As for the price, bring the extra cash. It will be at least $4. Anyone at the Eve 6/Old 97's show last weekend have an exact number? --David

_______________________

The Going Out Gurus: Brother Joe, please let me add in some VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION about "seating" at the 9:30 Club. Y'all newbies, please pay attention here. It is true there is no seating. But the small tiers on the balcony can be makeshift seats. Understand this though, if you sit on the tiers, you have no right to demand a clear space in front of you with no one standing. I've been going to the 9:30 Club for years, old and new version, and I've seen 9:30 newbies BEEF about this. They literally start arguments if you have the nerve to stand in front of them when they're sitting in their unsanctioned seats. Thankfully, the club has posted signs all around saying that no one has rights to legitimate seating, which means you either stand or have your view blocked. Still though, folks don't read these days and arguments still pop up. *Pet peeve rant ended* - Rhome

Washington, D.C.: Gurus -- Know anything about the outdoor movie nights at the softball field in Glover Park? I passed by last Friday and saw it, was wondering what they're showing and when. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: I (Jen) haven't heard about this. If someone's got details, please e-mail me. Thanks for the tip.

Washington, D.C.: Where is the best place to go hear free, live Irish music this time of year? We want a place where the crowd gets into the music, clapping their hands, etc. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: The absolute best is the weekly Irish Session, Monday at Nanny O'Brien's. You can bring your own instrument and jam along or, as I do, just get a pint of Smithwick's and take in the traditional tunes. Nanny's is also good on the weekends -- often a fiddle/guitar duo -- as are the Dubliner and Finn Mac Cool's on the Hill. If you feel like taking a drive, hit the Old Brogue in Great Falls, a snug, cozy place where you'll often find bands with pennywhistles. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Just curious if any of your women readers have encountered a guy in Dupont Circle claiming to be a French reporter just one month here from Paris (although he's been here for years.) His approach usually involves asking if you're European, he'll go on with subtle praise, then finally ask you if you want to get coffee in a very benign (but ultimately disturbing) way. At a dinner six months ago, I learned that every one of my female friends in the room (seven of us) had had some kind of experience like this--some more aggressive and abrasive than others. I saw him (s)talking to a girl yesterday and I stopped dead in my tracks, waited for their conversation to end, and when she walked away, I tracked her down to let her know he's someone to avoid. She said she felt like he had followed her for some time. Like many of us, too polite to tell him to bugger off, she listened to his claim that he's been here one month and he invited her for coffee sometime. The girl thanked me for stopping her, even though her instinct told already what I confirmed. Anyway, I just want to warn other women, esp. in the Dupont area, to be careful. (Please feel free to edit this as needed if indeed you can include it at all in the postings today. I'd really appreciate it.)

The Going Out Gurus: Washington, thanks for the tip. Always best to trust your instincts when it comes to meeting anyone.

I'm not sure what the police can do, but if you think he is really stalking women (not just randomly and repeatedly asking strangers out), maybe you could call the non-emergency police number and file some sort of description. -- Maura

Clarendon, Va.: Gurus- I have the perfect spot for the stinky frisbee players. The Exchange bar and restaurant at 17th & G St. has a great outdoor patio and pitchers of cold beer. They welcome sports teams (sponsoring a few) and can probably do specials for you if you let them know you're coming. They always have tons of grungy atheletes mixed in with the downtown afterwork crowd. It a lot of fun.

The Going Out Gurus: All right Clarendon! Thanks for the great tip. Sweaty, stinky athletes take heart. There is a place for you.

_______________________

Re: Post game parties near the Mall: I would recommend something in the GW area. My softball team often drinks it up postgame at Froggy Bottom across the street from the hospital. We are always plenty stinky and have always been warmly welcomed. The pizza and pitchers are priced right too.

The Going Out Gurus: And another tip for our athletes! Thanks!

Arlington, Va.: Hi, GOGs,

Have you seen/heard anything about Rocky at ATW? Obviously, washingtonpost.com blasted it, but I was looking for perhaps a more personal statement from you guys. OR the peanuts.

The Going Out Gurus: Actually, we at the Web site did not specifically blast Actors Theatre's version of "Rocky Horror". But Nelson Pressley, a reviewer for the paper, did not care for it much. I (Jen) haven't had an opportunity to see it, though I liked Rick Hammerly's performance in "Hedwig," and he's playing Frank N. Furter in this. Anyone have an opinion to offer? -- Jen

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: For Potomac and the stinky team, how about Crystal City Sports Pub? It's not DC, but it's a short hop down 395 into Crystal City and they also have outside seating...

The Going Out Gurus: Thanks, Washington. Another good tip.

Reston, Va.: Hi there! I'm very much looking forward to seeing They Might Be Giants/Fountains of Wayne at next week's Live on Penn. Some friends and I are planning to have dinner downtown beforehand. What time should we get there to make sure we don't miss TMBG, and especially FoW?

The Going Out Gurus: Fountains of Wayne will go on at 6:30 next Saturday and They Might Be Giants will follow at 8:00. It is sure to be very crowded, though; if you get there a little before 6:30, don't expect to be too close to the stage, unless you really plan on muscling your way up there. Maybe turn that dinner into a late lunch? --David

Farragut, Washington, D.C.: SAT TIME-
Second City is to Chicago as ____ is to DC? Are there any good comedy/improv workshops or classes that are offered locally? Many thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: The closest thing you'll get is the Washington Improv Theater. I've been meaning to check them out for ages and it always slips by me. Let us know if they work out for you. - Rhome

Washington, D.C. 20503: What's the scene like at Blue Gin? Has Top Shelf opened yet? Any advice for a new, hip lounge in DC?

The Going Out Gurus: I love Blue Gin. I've been four or five times, and had a great experience every time. There's room to lounge upstairs (if you arrive early) and a dancefloor downstairs filled with well-dressed 25-to-40somethings out to have a good time. Also, Blue Gin has best cocktail list I've seen in a while, thanks to bartender Antonia, who worked at a bevy of London's top lounges. You want drinks made with elderflowers, exotic fruit and top-shelf liquor, this is where to go.

I've been to Top Shelf once so far, and it's kind of a hole in the wall, although I like that you can play video games on flatscreen TVs (Atari and, I think, a Playstation). It's kind of expensive for what it is, but it's really popular with service-industry people. (I haven't put it in the database yet, but Top Shelf is on the 600 block of Indiana Ave. NW above the Dutch Mill Lounge.)

New hip lounges? Blue Gin, Eyebar and the soon-to-open Halo, from the guys who run Velvet Nation. That'll be on 17th Street, if I remember correctly. -- Fritz

_______________________

For the Spy Museum poster: My family was recently in town, and also has a tendancy for lateness. I purchased advance tickets for 10:00--the tickets are actually good for an hour after the time on the ticket.

So I of course shamelessly lied to the family telling them that we had to be there by 10, and we walked into the Spy Museum at 10:45... no problems.

The Going Out Gurus: Good follow up. Thanks!

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hey guys. Last time (or maybe time before last) you were talking about a Dogfish Head beer at the 9:30 Club, the Liquor de Malt. I was curious and asked for it at The Streets show and they thought I was nuts. Do they have it there?

The Going Out Gurus: Which bar? One of the lovely (and frustrating) things about the 9:30 is that each bar has a different beer selection, even when they're on opposite walls of the concert hall. I had the Liquor du Malt at the Streets show -- you have to go the basement "Back Bar" if you want to sample this strong, sweet brew. -- Fritz

_______________________

Live on Penn: Beers were $5 bucks for Miller, Miller Lite. Wine could be had but didn't check the price.

The Going Out Gurus: Yeah, that's what I thought. Thanks. -- Fritz

_______________________

Hawk and Dove: Going there for the first time. What should I expect? Seems to get horrible service reviews, but I'm just trying to drink there with people for happy hour. Any drink/beer suggestion, and do they pour Guinness correctly.

The Going Out Gurus: Service is iffy, *especially* at happy hour. They do Guinness like most intern-heavy bars, i.e. you'll probably have it in front of you before it settles. They usually have some sort of bottled beer special -- that's what I get. -- Fritz

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hi, my parents are visiting this weekend, and I am looking for a nice place similar to Chef Geoff's or to Black's Bar and Kitchen in Bethesda but new to me and preferably around the Dupont Circle or Adams Morgan area. Any suggestions? And have any of you tried Cashion's on Columbia Rd?

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, we've been to Cashion's and we like it a lot. Then, of course, there's Bistrot du Coin -- French in an over-the-top Disney-ish way, but pleasant and easy. -- Alexa

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: Hello! Can you get Live on Penn tickets at the door, or do you need to get them in advance?

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: You can get them at the gate, but you save $2 if you order in advance from liveonpenn.com. -- Fritz

_______________________

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: OK, here's a tricky one, would you know of a place that one might rent a live elephant for an Indian wedding? (No, this isn't some drunken bar bet, serious inquiry for a friend who just got engaged).

The Going Out Gurus: An excellent question, Adams Morgan. Let's see if anyone knows. Chatters, chime on in.

Washington, D.C.: On the last restaurant week, I went to Ceiba and had a wonderful time, partly because the service was fantastic. In the restaurant week before that, I went to Galileo and was treated like I might just run out on the check. Any suggestions on where great service could accompany the discounted prices?

The Going Out Gurus: Some helpful RW hints coming in now. -- Alexa

Reston, Va.: Got an early questions for you all ...I'm going to 9:30 club tonight for Lost Prophets. I would prefer to take Metro but I'm concerned that Metro will close before the show is over. How early do I need to get there to be able to get a parking spot? How long do weeknight shows usually last? I haven't been to 9:30 since 1998 so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Hi Reston,
The 9:30 usually does a pretty good job of timing shows so that they end in time for people to catch the Metro. Tonight, the Lost Prophets are supposed to go on at 10 p.m. and I doubt they'll play for longer than 90 minutes. But parking in the lot is always an option. Though I've been going there for years and have always parked on the street without a problem. Check out www.930.com for helpful info about parking at the club. - Joe

Old Barns: The best place in the area to witness old barns still in use (and lots of beautiful farmland) is Southern Prince Georges County and Charles County. It's amazing how close this region is to working farms and the "country." Take a ride down RT 4/Penn Ave past the Suitland Parkway and turn south onto US 301. Then take a left onto Croom Rd...you'll see beautiful rolling hills, horses, tobacco barns, etc all along. I would also suggest Rt 5 through Charles County. The barns throughout CC have just been listed by the National Register of Historic Places as Endangered since Maryland no longer encourages tobacco farming, and since those barnes were tobacco drying barns, they are now being left to weather and rot. Visit them while you can!!!

The Going Out Gurus: And a tip for the barn lovers among us. Thanks.

Washington, D.C.: Info for the Frisbee team - my boyfriend's Ultimate team likes to go to Capitol City Brewing Company (right next to Union station) right after games, and no one tells them they smell bad!

College Park, Md.: You guys mentioned a new club opening near Chinatown sometime in the next few months ... Club Fur I think was the name. Don't suppose you've got any more info on it, or a rumour of an opening date?

The Going Out Gurus: Sometime in August, if everything runs on schedule. It's going to be around North Capitol and M NE, and will have a bunch of dance nights, like the trance-centric Glow, on its schedule. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: I know it's July and I should be thinking pina coladas by the poolside ... but I'd really like to catch some live music this Saturday night, indoor or out.

Don't know where to start -- no packed 9:30 Club-places. I'm thinking more like: live jazz, or blues, or latin music, a low-key place; a place to hang out with a couple friends and listen to music with a beer in hand. Nothing too stuffy, something with a fun crowd.

Is my question too broad? Can you help a girl out? Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: There are a couple of fun, no-alcohol-permitted shows on Saturday if you want to take that route. Swing revivalists Royal Crown Revue are playing at Glen Echo's Spanish Ballroom. Should be a fun crowd, although maybe not too low-key. Rockabilly band 52 Pickup is playing an outdoor show at the Potomac Overlook Park in Arlington. But if you just want that low-key, beer in hand thing, try HR-57 for some jazz and a good atmosphere. --David

Rosslyn, Va.: HI GOG's

My boyfriend travels a lot and is only in town for this weekend (he flies out on Monday a.m. for another week). I would love some suggestions for fun things to do this weekend.

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Rosslyn, I'm not sure what your typical interests are, but you might try the National Gallery's jazz brunch on Sunday, followed by a look their exhibitions of Mayan art and "Palace and Mosque." I just caught a preview of the latter this week and it was stunning.

If visual arts don't knock your socks off, try free music by the NSO at Carter Barron, Baltimore's Artscape festival. -- Maura

Same old same old, Washington, D.C.: Dear Gurus:

I am looking to breathe some life into my dates with my boyfriend. Lately dates have consisted of movies, or casual dinners at home. What upscale/loungy bar could I take him to for drinks that would be fun? Is Helix worth considering? Thanks so very much!

-Boring

The Going Out Gurus: Helix might be worth it, especially if you can sit on the fun summer patio. Try Blue Gin, where you can dance after cocktails, or just relax on a couch, Eyebar, Gazuza (for people-watching), Eighteenth Street Lounge or Local 16. Note: of these, only Helix has a happy hour. -- Fritz

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: To the poster regarding the "French reporter". I think I met this guy...though it was about a year ago. He went on about how Americans aren't as friendly as Europeans because we don't invite strangers like him into our homes. Creepy.

The Going Out Gurus: Creepy indeed.

Re: Restaurant Week (DC): Having lived in DC for 8 years, I try to do this every year and find the pricier the restaurant, the crappier the R-week treatment. Galileo was the worst. Our meal was so bad, down to the back corner table, the cold food and the water from the A/C dripping on the ceiling to our table, they gave us a free meal. Bottom line, R-week is a good idea, but many restaurants only offer one-two of their cheaper-to-prepare dishes (i.e., pasta) and then lose complete interest in you when they find out why you're there. Anyone else have good r-week experiences?

The Going Out Gurus: More...

Washington, D.C.: Hi GOGs,
Love the chats! I was researching the entertainment section for something hip to do on a boring Monday night and came across a review that was posted in '02. The review identified a social group/activity called "Conversations" which provides a casual forum for young African-American professionals to come together to network, socialize and generally discuss topics of the day. I was wondering if the group still meets, is it open to anyone interested or do you have to know someone who already attends, etc. Didn't see a number/contact info and I knew you could find out! And then, what is there to do on a boring Monday night for a couple seeking drinks and food in D.C. (downtown/uptown) after 10:00 p.m.? Money and crowd not an issue, but must be cool in general. Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: I just got off the phone with the folks at the Henley, all the information here is still accurate. That means I can put it back on my radar to check out and so can you. It doesn't seem to be a closed session, just show up and be personable. As for your Monday query, maybe you could hang at Gazuza for awhile and check out Aubergine 3 then dip over to Afterwords for some vittles. - Rhome

London, via Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.: Hi GoG's --

I am a regular at the Black Cat's Mouse Trap brit pop dance night, and love it. I have never been to their "other" dance night Bliss and was thinking of venturing out this weekend.

Two questions:
1 - Is there a big difference in the music/crowd?
2 - Is one night more happening than the other? (read: have I been in the dark all this time going to Mouse Trap, when Bliss is really the better night to go out dancing?)

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Very different, and they're actually not related. Bliss (this Saturday) is smaller, and plays more modern/electronic dance music than Mousetrap -- think !!!, the Killers, the Streets, Franz Ferdinand remixes, etc., and not Blur, Pulp and Britpop's greatest hits. That said, I enjoy both nights, but I think of them as separate genres these days. -- Fritz

Bowie, Md.: Hi Gurus --

Any info on where tonight's Poetry Fest for the DC's Hip Hop Festival will be taking place? It doesn't say on the events list.

The Going Out Gurus: That info would be right here. Make sure you stop by Reunion if you're trying to make a late night of it and get some hip-hop grooving in order. - Rhome

Art-O-Matic: You have talked about Art-O-Matic in the past. What exactly is it?

The Going Out Gurus: We've spoken about past Art-O-Matics, but we don't have too much information yet on this year's model.

Art-o-Matic is a show of works by local artists. Everyone is invited to participate and no one is turned away. The space changes every other year (which is how often the show takes place). In the past, it's always been a spot in turnaround/abandoned space downtown. You'll find a crazy range of work is usually on view, from independent professionals to young amateurs. The best part of it is its energy: Everyone participates and everyone puts it together. We'll be sure to cover it this year when it opens in late October, I believe. -- Maura

Washington, D.C.: Somebody asked about dodgeball games in the area the other week. There are two pickup this weekend, one in MD and one in Van Ness. Check out http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/dc-dodgeball/ for the info. They are free and anybody can go! (These are the same guys from the Post article.) Hope to see some GoGs there!

The Going Out Gurus: At last, dodgeball in Washington. Thanks for the heads up and here's the link to that Web site. Lynette

Baltimore, Md.: Hi Gurus
My friend and I love a good hot dog. Any recommendations in D.C. or the surrounding area?

The Going Out Gurus: Really, the first and last name in DC hot dogs is Ben's Chili Bowl. Get to it. On U St. NW between 12th and 13th (I think) - Joe

Springfield, Va.: Hey Gang,

What kind of crowd could I expect to find at the Ted Leo and The Pharmacists show next Thursday?

The Going Out Gurus: Usually, Reston, I'd say to expect an extremely packed house at the Black Cat for Ted Leo, given his local ties and the fact that he totally rules. But he has played two free shows in the area in the past month, so it's possible that many folks have gotten their fix of Teddy and the RX. Ha, as if such a thing exists! Openers Radio 4 should draw some people as well. So basically, expect a pretty big crowd, if not quite a sell out. --David

Pedicure, L'Enfant: Any suggestions for a slightly less expensive option? I'm not ruling out Mandarin, just wanting another option...

The Going Out Gurus: How about RPM Full Service Salon?

Washington, D.C.: I'm checking out an "I Love the 90s" (a tad ubiquitous, I know, thanks VH1) party - SPY LOUNGE/Felix that is being promoted by "Party Slave." Has anyone ever attended one of these events? What's the scene like?

The Going Out Gurus: It varies with the event, although I've found the crowd to be fairly cool and not uptight. I expect this weekend's party should be a lot of fun, with three DJs spinning 90s music and all kinds of giveaways (including Koosh balls). More info in our "This Week in Nightlife" column. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: There are some bars here in the city that consider themselves Red Sox bars ... but who likes the Red Sux?! Where can I find a place where Yankees fans will tend to get together for some beers and a game?

The Going Out Gurus: Chief Ike's claims its showing every Yankees game, as does Stetson's. Not liking the Yankees, I haven't been to watch any at either place. -- Fritz

Arlington, Va.: Regarding live jazz on Saturday, I would definitely recommend HR-57 - and add that you can bring your own bottle of wine there - there's just a small corkage fee. Plus they serve great chicken wings!

The Going Out Gurus: True.

R-Weel Suggestion: 1789 was an amazing r-week experience. Even though, if memory serves me, the choices were chicken and fish, the service was superior and the atmosphere was spectacular.

The Going Out Gurus: Yes, I've heard that 1789 does it well too. But it books up very quickly. -- Alexa

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: Think Elaine from Seinfeld, then make her a man and make her dance even worse then that. What do you get? My boyfriend's dancing abilities. Is there any advice out there on how to possibly make him feel a beat or a rhythm so some day he will be able to dance without people cringing around him? (Beginner salsa lessons, etc are not going to cut it, as to learn those he has to first understand the beat!) Thanks if you can help, I understand if its impossible too...

The Going Out Gurus: The best advice I can give is that dude needs to listen to music, a lot of it. I've always wondered myself why some folks can be in a loud dance club yet they still can't find the beat... it's literally pounding them in their chests (and hindparts)! I eventually realized that it's all about conditioning. You have to absorb the rhythms, let them become a part of you. You have to engage yourself in the music so that the rhythms take root within you. If you don't like music, you won't be a good dancer, unless you're just naturally athletic or graceful. Thankfully, Guru Jen "Boogie Down" Chaney is all of the above, and she spiritually guided me on this response. Does your boyfriend actually like music? What kinds? You might need to up his intake. - Rhome

Washington, D.C.: I have a question about happy hours. We all know there are happy hours that offer cheap pitchers and pints. There are also happy hours that offer cheap rail/well drinks. But what about happy hours that offer cheap call drinks? Something with Absolut or Jack Daniels or any other drinks that aren't Bowman's or Aristocrat?

The Going Out Gurus: Circle Bistro comes to mind ($5 for really good cocktails of the week), as do Aroma and all the Kimpton bars (Rouge, Helix, Topaz, etc). -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Where's a good place to go for happy hour in the Van Ness area?

The Going Out Gurus: There isn't one. You have two choices: Up to Tenleytown (Mexican beer and free food at Guapo's) or down to Cleveland Park (Aroma, Nanny O'Briens, the Four Provinces, the rooftop bar at Brick's). I'd choose the latter. -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: I REALLY recommend New Heights in Woodley Park for restaurant week. The whole menu is included - 5 dollars more for one of their steaks and 10 dollars more for lamb, I believe - so there are lots of options. It's a somewhat hidden gem, and restaurant week is about discovering places, so it's great. Plus, the regular food there is really expensive. Last time, my buffalo tips alone were $28 on the regular menu, so three courses for $25 was an unreal bargain. The service was excellent and we were never made to feel as though we were putting them out.

The Going Out Gurus: Three cheers for New Heights.

I've been going there for the past 30 years and have never felt that I had a decent dinner (some were pretty awful, eg the Mug and Mallet- better name might be Mug You and Mallet).

Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: If you don't mind driving a little ways to Bethany, I (Jen) recommend Sedona's. I've eaten there a couple of times and was really pleased. -- Jen

Adams Morgan, Washington, D.C.: Dear GoG's,

Can someone pleeeease explain what all the hullabaloo is surrounding AIR. I went there last Saturday with a bunch of friends(rolled up around 12:30) only to find two horrendously long lines (with about 100 people in each--no BS)...Stood in line for an hour without moving an inch. We finally got out of line at 1:30, considering that by the time we'd get in and pay the steep cover ($20), there'd only be about 20min. of dancing left ... so my question is, what is the deal? is it that great of a place? Was there something special going on last weekend? If you or any other chatters were there, please give me the low-down!! Honestly, the music didn't sound so great from outside the barricaded area -- they actually played some bad Madonna and Vanilla Ice, puh-lease i expect much more -- but with all that said, I am defintely intrigued, and will probably plan on going at 10ish if need be, just to see what all the fuss is about!

The Going Out Gurus: One reason for the lines is that Air is technically on Federal Property (the Reagan building), so everyone who goes in has to go through a metal detector, bag search, etc. I find myself generally enjoying Air -- something about being outside with a DJ and excellent people-watching opportunities -- but the lines can be awful if you arrive late. That's a great reason to get on the guest list (and then it's only $10) and arrive by 11.

As for the music -- I cringed when I heard a DJ spin Vanilla Ice a few weeks ago, but everybody seemed to love it. I don't get it... -- Fritz

Washington, D.C.: Can you recommend an after work happy hour spot for a couple of single girls in their 30s? We don't want anything too pretentious, or too young, but also not the usual gov't/office type crowd either - something a little more mixed. We like 18th Street Lounge but want to try something new. Anywhere in DC is fine. Thanks!

The Going Out Gurus: Washington, drinks in the courtyard at Poste might be just up your alley. Just last week I stopped in for a cocktail and was reminded just how fabulous that space is. Otherwise, you might try the Tabard Inn or the patio at L'Enfant. -- Maura

Washington, D.C.: Going out Gurus:
My 20-year-old brother is coming next week. He has the been- there-done-that attitude about DC. He says he is not interested in doing any touristy stuff. Any suggestions? He will be here during the week only so weekend activities are out. Also, any thoughts on what nighttime activities might be fun for someone just under 21?
Thanks.

The Going Out Gurus: Well, the 9:30 Club, Black Cat and HR-57 are all cool, all-ages places. Maybe check out The Improv; comic hypnotist Flip Orley is there for the next week and a half and he's almost always hilarious. --David

Re: Blue Gin: I have to strongly disagree with you on Blue Gin being "the" place to go. After a recent run in with a suave doorman, outfitted with an earpiece, who tried to tell me I couldn't get in because I was under 25, I WILL NOT be returning there. I am a recent import from NYC who has been to many a cookie cutter "lounge" on Manhattan. Not only am I not 25, but I NEVER waited in lines there, and this doorman, in Georgetown (a college town no less) tries to tell me I can't join my party because I'm 24. I did get in, to find a relatively unimpressive scene, but my problem is that their website says nothing about being 25 and over, but rather boasts how "unpretentious" it is. There was also nothing mentioned about the age requirement when we called to reserve tables for our party. This, from the owners of that awful dive, Third Edition - who are they kidding??

The Going Out Gurus: The 25-and-over requirement is legal, not something dictated by the management. Blue Gin replaced a college sports bar called Champions, which was busted repeatedly for serving minors, and eventually closed after having its liquor license suspended. Because of Champions' repeated problems with dtudents drinking there, the ABC and the community wrote a 25-and-over clause into its liquor license. Blue Gin now operates under that transfered liquor license. It's screwed up, but a place that's been open less than two months has its license on probation.

I agree, though, that they need to be more upfront about the 25-and-over clause. -- Fritz

Our Joe, our little Joey, is having a very hard time coming up with unique ideas for wedding favors for his big day in early December. Have a think this week if you can and get back to us. Washington, D.C.: Hi guys! LOVE these chats! My friends and I want to go out dancing and drinking Friday night -- need some suggestions. We like hip hop (had a good time at H2O a few weeks ago, but still mourning the loss of VIP.) I'd like to try some place other than Home or Platinum (am feeling a little bit too old for those types of places). Thanks for any suggestions.

The Going Out Gurus: How about Air? It's large and has hip-hop and a number of bars. For someplace smaller, there's always Republic Garderns (where the crowd's a little more mature than H2O, too).

Ladies Night: Friend's b-day is this Saturday and all the ladies are celebrating! We want a place that's a little loungy with some great music and a dance floor. The following have been thrown out as options: Modern, Andalu and Anzu. What's the vibe like in each on a Saturday night ... type of music and so on?

Thanks!!

The Going Out Gurus: Quick Saturday option assessment:

Modern - Pretty high energy (and young, without being cloyingly so). Has the feel of a large dance club without being large and the decor of a lounge. Hip-hop, R&B, Old School & Reggae. If you want to chill though and it's packed, you're out of luck because the only options are the booths surrounding the bar and they fill up pretty quickly. You should call and reserve one.

Andalu - I haven't been there on Saturdays in ages unless it was for a special event. It hasn't been the same for me since Taha left but it's always been one of my favorite spots because of its sexy decor, coziness and great sound system. I love playing there and the spot always comes alive with the right dj. I've had many memorable nights there on the floor and behind the decks. I think you'll get a mix of house and popular dance music these days (hip-hop and the like). The crowd is a bit Euro but more so the standard partiers on that 18th and Conn strip. Always seems to me that there are a lot of good looking women and fewer dudes. I think the choice rear lounge space is often reserved, you'd want to call in advance too.

Anzu probably gets the most raucous of the three, and has the most international crowd. The sound system isn't as good as the others but vibes in there are consistently good. They can do the exclusive thing without making folks feel dissed. You're going to get straight house music (and some techno) there. They've been killing it with their special events... Partyslave.com and Adrian Loving/Stevie G. I think folks that enjoyed those events are coming back on the regular nights. - Rhome

To the Blue Gin complainer: While I understand this is frustrating for you , please try to understand that to many of us, the APPEAL of the place is that it is 25 and over!; When you are still young enough to want to go out, yet are way past your tolerance of college bashes, and live in Georgetown, you are desperate for a place like this!;

The Going Out Gurus: Can't we all just get along?

The Going Out Gurus: The Yankee Candle route is good.

Washington, DC: To the person who thinks that anyone under 25 wants to go to a college hangout, you're wrong. It's just that simple. Many people under 25 do not want the college bar or club scene. Many of us never did. However, I happen to think that place is a little too young for me (as a mature 21-year-old). I prefer going to a hotel bar where I can have a drink and a conversation. However, that does require having the mental ability to continue a conversation, which you apparently lack.

The Going Out Gurus: Come on, play nice!
