After six months of investigation and deliberation, Commissioner Bud Selig has given his approval to former agent Jeff Moorad becoming a part-owner of the Arizona Diamondbacks. "It's been a long process," said Moorad, who had to provide the commissioner's office with detailed personal and financial records, "but I think a beneficial one for all concerned." . . .
The Angels' Vladimir Guerrero took his first swings of the spring and hit some quality shots, showing no ill effects from an offseason injury. Last year's AL MVP, who hurt his right thumb playing winter ball in the Dominican League, lined a series of pitches from hitting coach Mickey Hatcher. . . .

Nick Swisher played all of last season with a broken thumb, and didn't even know it. Oakland's rookie outfielder is now setting off airport metal detectors -- he carries a tiny X-ray of the tiny screw in his finger -- but his swing is nearly back to normal.
"I didn't really care," he said. "I just wanted to play. Things were going well. We were winning and getting ready to go down the stretch. Then I got called up, and you're not going to say anything there."
