Out of Reach

Smith took it from there. He ran wide left and got into the open for a 15-yard gain. On first and goal from the 5, Smith weaved his way into the end zone for his first rushing touchdown of the season.

After the Redskins stalled again, the Cowboys held the ball for 10 minutes 11 seconds but ended with no points to show for it. They eschewed a field goal attempt on fourth and six from the Redskins 27, and a pass interference penalty on rookie cornerback Fred Smoot gave them 11 yards and a first down. But a holding penalty on guard Kelvin Garmon pushed the Cowboys back, and Hilbert yanked a 44-yard field goal try wide left.

    _____The Season in Photos_____
Take a look back at Washington's 8-8 year, Marty Schottenheimer's first and last season with the Redskins.

The Redskins moved to the Cowboys 37 in the final seconds of the half but threw two incompletions into the end zone sandwiched around a delay-of-game penalty.

Carter made a costly mistake on the Cowboys' second possession of the second half. He moved to his right while under pressure on a third-and-10 play, and heaved the ball recklessly downfield toward wide receiver Darrin Chiaverini, who was surrounded by two defenders. Smoot made a leaping grab for the interception at the Redskins 37.

The Redskins capitalized. Davis kept the drive going with a four-yard run on third and two, and went 29 yards with a screen pass to give the Redskins a first down at the Dallas 1.

It wasn't easy from there. Davis was hit hard by defensive end Greg Ellis on first down and pushed back a yard. He also was stacked up on second and third downs, and the Redskins faced a fourth and goal at the 1 and called a timeout.

Banks began the fourth-down play by faking a handoff to Davis, and wanted to slip a pass to tight end Zeron Flemister. But Flemister got tied up at the line of scrimmage and Banks decided to run. He moved from the left side of the field to the right, slipped inside cornerback Pat Dennis and dove into the end zone. Banks limped off the field with a sprained right ankle but returned to the game, and Conway's extra point tied the score at 7 with 1:42 to play in the third quarter.

The Cowboys didn't wilt, however. On a third and two from the Dallas 37, Wiley ran wide right, cut across the field and motored 46 yards before being dragged down by Smoot. Carter was sacked on third down by defensive end Bruce Smith, but Hilbert connected from 38 yards to give Dallas a 10-7 advantage with 13:44 left.

A 34-yard completion from Banks to wide receiver Kevin Lockett got the Redskins to the Dallas 27. But Davis had to recover a fumbled snap on second down for a five-yard loss, and Banks was sacked by defensive tackles Brandon Noble and Michael Myers on third down. Conway lined up for what would have been a 51-yard field goal attempt. He has made 14 of 17 field goal tries this season, including a 55-yarder. But he took the snap from Ethan Albright and dropped a punt that rolled to the Dallas 6.

No matter. The Cowboys moved 94 yards. Smith's running got the Cowboys out of the shadow of their end zone. On a third-down play from the Dallas 36, Ismail got behind Bailey, who admitted he was fooled on the play. Ismail made the catch around the Redskins 32 and outraced Bailey to the end zone.

Banks, under pressure from Ellis, overthrew running back Ki-Jana Carter and was intercepted by safety Izell Reese, whose 42-yard return set up Hilbert's 39-yard field goal with 3:11 to go.
