NBC Universal will preempt an hour of prime-time programming on all of its broadcast and cable networks Saturday, Jan. 15, at 8 p.m. for a live telethon benefiting victims of the tsunami in South Asia.
In addition, 14 stations owned and operated by NBC, including Washington's WRC (Channel 4), will telecast a one-hour, commercial-free fundraiser tomorrow night at 7. The special is being produced by WNBC in New York in conjunction with UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund.

The "music and celebrity-driven broadcast" on Jan. 15 will air on NBC, USA Network, Bravo, Trio, Sci Fi, MSNBC and CNBC. Viewers will be able to phone in with donations, according to an NBC statement released yesterday. The program will be tape-delayed on the West Coast.
Further details will be announced later this week.
Saturdays typically have the smallest audiences of the week; NBC has been airing movies and repeats of various series in the 8 p.m. time slot.
In September 2001, more than 30 broadcast and cable networks, including NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox, preempted two hours of prime-time programming for a star-studded special to raise money for relief after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, in which nearly 3,000 people died.
The official death toll of the tsunami that struck Dec. 26 is approximately 140,000, and likely to climb.
