Got Plans?

The Going Out Gurus
of the washingtonpost.com Entertainment Guide
Thursday, March 24, 2005; 1:00 PM

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

The Going Out Gurus: Hello everyone, and welcome to another hour of Internet diversion. This is Joe and I'll make sure no one gets hurt today. Also here are Fritz, Janet, Alexa, Maura, Jen, Anne and David. Alas, no Rhome. Oh, and have we mentioned yet that lovely Maura got engaged a couple of weeks ago? We're all very happy for her. Now she can answer all the wedding planning questions. OK, let's start.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: Love your chats. Where will all the WVU fans be gathering to watch the big game tonight? Especially, any cute Mountaineer girls. If they win, I will be burning my couch tonight!

Fritz: Mountaineers gather at Arlington's Ragtime, an unspectacular little place bar that has little to recommend it besides some great Buffalo wings.

_______________________

Washington D.C.: Was just wondering if anyone would know where I could find good old British yorkshire puddings.

Cheers!;

Alexa: I know of no place but my house. I make a great one. But if anyone has a sighting, please say. Are popovers the U.S. equivalent?

_______________________

Annandale, Va.: After reading the Monday Wash Post (Metro) on the popularity of Texas Hold Em', I was wondering where their might be games held in Fairfax County on a Friday or Saturday night.

Thanks,
Jenn

Fritz: Don't know about Fairfax. In the past, I've written about a few other weekly games -- Tuesdays at Clarendon Grill (7 p.m. start) and Wednesdays at Fado (7:30), and the every-other-week tournaments at Dr. Dremo's (Saturday nights in Arlington). I've only played at the latter two, but really enjoyed them both.

_______________________

Washington D.C.: Rumor has it that the ratio of women to men is 7 to 1 here in Washington DC. Is this correct? If so.....then where are all the lovely ladies hanging out at????

Joe: Rhome, is this you? I thought you were on vacation.

_______________________

Washington D.C.: Hey guys!;!; Do you all know of any bars in the area that offer things like $20 open bars???

Fritz: There's MCCXXIII on Fridays ($15, open from 5 to 9), which is probably the best known, but my favorite is now Fridays at Tapatinis, where you pay $20 for top-shelf liquor or beer from 5 to 8. No, there's no catch. It's a madhouse, but worth it, I think, if you're going to stick around for more than one martini.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Love your chats!; I'm heading to the Fatboy Slim concert at the 9:30 Club on Saturday. Any suggestions on where my fiancee and I can grab dinner before the show? I'm thinking U Street Corridor... Thanks!;

Fritz: Depends what you want. I like Dukem or Roha (Ethiopian), but I've also enjoyed pre-concert meals at the Islander (Carribean) and Polly's (burgers, fries, etc.). If you want somelight fast without fuss, I think the Saloon's grilled cheese and Reubens are some of the best in D.C.

_______________________

Crystal City, Va.: I am a 23 year old male looking for cooking classes. I work M-F 9-5, so if there are classes offered outside of that time range or on the weekends that would be great.

Alexa: For some reason, all I'm finding at the moment is the list from 2003, but here it is anyway because it'll give you an idea of what's out there. The ones I've heard good things about are Sur La Table and the Lebanese Taverna.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Why is DC so lame? Awful DJs and boring party-goers. I have been in DC for the past 5 years and its the same old, ame old. At first it was bearable because many places didn't have cover charges, but now almost every club has cover charge (or they entice you with the non-existent free guestlist). Instead, I go to NYC to get my party on. Better party crowd and much better DJs. Even the NY DJs that suck are better than the better DJs (with exceptions) in DC. Most DJs in don't know how to mix/blend/beat match records!;

Fritz: Have fun in New York!

_______________________

Rockville, Md.: You guys are the best. Speaking of which, my boring haircut needs a change. Any suggestions for a stylist in Rockville that can help a lady get a hip new look?

Janet: Suggestions: Hugo in Bethesda or, if you're willing to experiment, how about giving one of the Hair Cuttery places in Rockville a try? Also, there's BubblesiMMontgomery Mall. Good luck!!

_______________________

Glover Park, D.C.: Last minute jam!; My mom broke her foot and decided to ship my 14-yr-old sister out to stay with me & my husband over her Spring Break. She's super cool and artsy, & recently into photo-journalism. Are there any photo exhibits that would make me look like the best big sister EVER? Or anything in that realm for a 14-er? Thanks for taking my question!;

Maura: There are some great ones to choose from, Glover Park. At the National Gallery, Andre Kertesz is sure to please (take a preview here). There is some great photography in the Corcoran Biennial. Your sister might really enjoy SlideShow at the Baltimore Museum of Art -- a photographic medium unbeknowst to most 14-year-olds.

_______________________

U ST NW: No question.. just thanks.. I own CARBON, a boutique at 1203 U ST NW / www.CarbonDC.com , that provides a forward selection of M/W footwear in a loungy atmosphere..

A customer mentioned that he read about me on your Blog, so he dropped by.. I couldn't find the transcript.. but thanks!;

Janet: Thanks for chiming in!

Arlington, Va.: The family is taking a trip to Williamsburg for the weekend--anything we shouldn't miss or should avoid?

Jen: You'll certainly want to spend time on Duke of Gloucester Street, which is the center of the Colonial area. Even if you decide not to do the formal, historic tours (some of which are worth doing unless you have very young children who get restless easily) you can still see the buildings and visit some of the shops in that area. By all means, have lunch at The Cheese Shop and make sure to drop by Paul's Deli (off of Richmond Road, across the street from William & Mary's football stadium). In the early evening, lots of families go there for dinner. Food's good and pretty inexpensive.
Busch Gardens is fun, but is also kind of pricey. If you're on a budget, you may want to skip it. For more ideas, check out the Williamsburg Convention and Visitors Bureau Web site.

Washington, D.C.: My sister and brother-in law are visiting us in DC from London this coming Easter weekend for 4 days.

We want to drive out somewhere near by to get brunch and also browse through some quaint stores/ do some basic shopping (since London is so much more exciting). I was thinking something like Annapolis..do you have a suggestion of a restaurant in Annapolis or perhaps a different area and a restaurant there? My husband would prefer we drive to 4 and 20 blackbirds..but perhaps somethign like that but a new place we haven't been?

The other question I have is could you suggest a nice fun place about $20-$30 ahead for Easter brunch in Washington, DC..I see Cheff Geoffs has a decent $20 option. Or we could drive out and do Easter brunch in the country side that day and spend Saturday shopping in DC.

Could you give me advice regarding fun things to do on Sat and Sunday during the day?

Thanks.

Alexa: Seems a bit odd, I suppose, to recommend a pub to some visiting Brits and ordinarily I wouldn't dare. But I am one and you do mention a desire for countryside. The Hunter's Head Tavern is a very nice jaunt and impressively pubby. On the way, you can wander about in Middleburg, buy some bangers at ye olde english butcher, Home Farm.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Where can I watch the World Cup Qualifier game between England and Northern Ireland live at 10am on Saturday? Do places charge a cover? (in the district preferably)

Fritz: Everyone's charging a cover because satellite monopoly -- sorry, provider -- Setanta requires them to. I'm told you'll pay $20 everywhere, whether you head for Fado or Lucky Bar (or Summers, just over the river, which is now non-smoking during live soccer matches, if that makes a difference).

Of the three, I'd go to Fado for the atmosphere or Summers for the sheer number of screens.

_______________________

Silver Spring, Md.: Know of any places online where I can buy European-style fashion? (A place that will deliver to the U.S.) I checked Debenham's and they won't deliver outside of the U.K.

Janet: Yes, if I understand you correctly, there are a few places where you can buy European fashions online. I can't claim to have ordered anything myself but I always look at net a porter to see what's new. I also check yoox to see their offerings, which I believe are somewhat discounted. I hope this is what you were thinking about.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: This comment is for the petite girl in last week's discussion who couldn't find a good winter coat. I missed the discussion, but know the exact place for you to buy a great coat--LL Bean. Try the Wool/Cashmere 3/4-length coat (or pea coat) in Petite. You might have to wait till the Winter Apparel come out again, but I have the 3/4 length one, and it fits perfectly. (I'm barely 5' and about 100 lbs.)

Janet: For the petite lass in search of a winter coat, here's a suggestion from one of our chatters.

_______________________

Dupont Circle, D.C.: Ok, I'm a date-aholic. I go on a few each week. What I cannot understand about some men is the places they chose to bring girls on a "first date". When D.C. has some of the most intriguing places, bars, lounges, restaurants chock-a-block with history and ambiance, perfect for a first date. Yet some of them bring me to a dive bar (love them with my girl friends on a friday night..but a first date?), or chain restaurant. I wish my dates would read your blog, Tom's blog and reviews and think a little outside the box. My love life would be a lot better!

I get hell from my guy friends on this for expecting to much. I'm not expecting the Ritz, just a little effort.

Joe: Hmmmmmmm, I have to say I think this question might start a firestorm. Any readers want to comment?

_______________________

Washington D.C.: Gurus,

I know this has probably been asked before, but I need a Dupont/Downtown area bar or restaurant that would be good to watch the drama of the Sweet 16? I feel that all normal sports bars will be packed... are there any secret hotspots that have the three requirements for sports viewing: 1. more than one TV, 2. quality beer, decent bar food. Any suggestions?

Tired of ESPN Zone

Fritz: Yeah. Porter's is my new favorite "secret" spot to watch games during the week, because while it's not much of a sports bar, there are 17 flat-screens on three brick-walled levels; the beer (Foggy Bottom Ale and Pilsner Urquell on draft) is gold, and the burger is probably the best I've had at a "sports bar" in ages. (Blue cheese and top-quality beef? Thanks, Graig Glufling of Matchbox/Ugly Mug.)

I never liked ESPN Zone in the first place.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hi guys!; Any ideas on where I could get old VHS videos transfered to DVD? You're the best!;

Jen: I've thought about doing this myself, but haven't actually gotten my tapes together and made it happen. Assuming you don't want to buy the equipment to do this yourself, I believe that some camera stores, like Ritz, provide this service. I'd start there first. Even if the store closest to you doesn't do it, they should be able to recommend a retailer that does. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

_______________________

Annandale, Va.: Have you heard anything good or bad about the Eleventh Street Bar in Arlington?

I have a co-worker that went and said it was a great place but I wanted to know if you had any feedback or have checked it out yourself.

Fritz: I reviewed the place a few months ago, have been back a couple times since, and really enjoy it. It's standing-room-only late on weekends, but if you can get a table, it's the coolest lounge in Arlington.

_______________________

Rents in Town... Help!;: Hey GOGs, the rents are in town Wed thru Sunday, so by the time you all are posting... I'll have run out of ideas of things to do with them (that don't involve gorging on food). Any festivals, day trips, or must sees that I can distract them with? (We are Dupont Circle based, but have wheels.)

Thanks!;

Maura: In town you could check out the Cherry Blossom Festival kick off on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Jefferson Memorial. You won't see any buds this early, but it might put you in a spring-y state of mind. If you want to make a day trip of it, you might celebrate Maryland Day in Historic St. Mary's City (the state's first capital), complete with music, a kite festival and historic reenactments.

_______________________

Washington D.C.: What is the status of Buzz at Nations on Fridays? I have heard that they closed down, are they open again? Thanks.

David: Well, Buzz at Nation is no longer, that's true. But it's all in the name. After returning from exile in Baltimore about a year ago, they changed the name to Cubik, and it's basically the same Friday night party it's always been, with lots of big name house, techno and drum'n'bass DJs.

_______________________

Clarendon, Va.: Did any hear how the show at Clarendon Ballroom with DJ Sammy went last Friday? Interesting concept.....bringing in a huge International DJ to the 'burbs...wondering how it went off.

Fritz: Haven't heard, but I'm interested to know. Anyone?

Owner Pete Pflug was pretty excited about it when he called me with the info, and says it's something he'd like to do more often. I don't see why he can't, especially because it's bigger than many "dance clubs" in Washington.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: GOGs, I could use your help! I am meeting up with 2 friends of mine downtown tomorrow night around 7.30. The one works at the Reagan building and we are looking for someplace to go to grab drinks/snacks and possibly dinner. We don't want to end up in the ghost town that is downtown or end up paying $30 for an entree. Any suggestions for someplace cheap or reasonable around the Reagan building or anywhere up the red line like farragut/dupont/cleveland pk??
Many thanks!

Anne: In the middle of downtown, how about the space-age downtown Cafe Asia? It would be easy to start with drinks and apps and get dinner if you want. In Dupont, there's drinks and tapas at Cloud and Gazuza, but Levante's could probably fit the bill for those and dinner, too. In Cleveland Park, I'd say Bardeo for wine and small plates.

_______________________

Re Williamsburg, Va.: For the person going to Williamsburg, you should also check out the governor's palace maze and garden--very pretty as everything is starting to bloom. Also might want to walk around the William and Mary Campus and check out the Wren Building.

Jen: Thanks for this. Yes, the maze is a lot of fun. I can't remember if you have to pay to access that part of the mansion (as a W&M alum, I definitely jumped the wall late at night, but can't remember what I did as a law-abiding citizen during the daylight hours). But it's a pretty spot, as is the campus. The kids might especially enjoy visiting the University Center (adjacent to Zable Stadium) because there are fun video games inside.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Here's a question I don't think I've read on your chat before: how would you spend your last day of "freedom" before becoming a parent? I have a c-section scheduled for next wednesday (for medical reasons, not because I'm posh spice or anything), so husband and I are taking Tuesday off to play. Besides going to a movie and eating at a nice restaurant (the things everyone keeps telling us to do before the baby comes) what are some fun things that'll be happening on Tuesday that you would recommend? Thanks!;

Alexa: Don't waste these precious hours going to a movie -- you can still do that (for a little while at least) with a babe in tow. Go for breakfast, go for lunch, go for afternoon tea. Go for dinner. Book yourselves a night in a hotel. Read a book, go somewhere hushed, see a play. Hell, sit on a bench and kiss.

_______________________

Washington D.C.: More of a shopping than going out questions, but looking for 2 gifts. First, looking for a spa in Dupont or Capital Hill that does great massages. Second, going to my boyfriend's family for Easter and would like to bring a little something. Any ideas outside of flowers (lilies for Easter, right?) or chocolate? Anthing DC-themed? Thx!;

Janet: A massage right now sounds pretty peachy. In Dupont Circle, try Bluemercury; in the Capitol Hill area, Skin Beauty Lounge. As for an Easter gift, a nice wine would be my pick. Do your boyfriend's parents live out of town?

_______________________

DC Girl: Mid-20's, preppy-by-association, Capitol Hill staffer here, looking to branch out and try some new places in Adams Morgan... Actually, I haven't spent much time there at all; must admit I get intimidated by the nightlife scene - where to start? I like low-key bars (ie, no outrageous cover charge, decent beer, no elitist dress code), that are a fun place to have a drink with old friends, and maybe meet new friends, on any given Friday or Saturday night. Or week night, for that matter.

I've been to Soussi and The Reef and had a great time at each. Can you suggest any other places along those lines? Bonus if they have live music.

Fritz: I'd recommend Bossa (if there's no cover), Pharmacy, Adams Mill or Bedrock. For live music, about the only place I've been recently in AdMo was Cafe Toulouse, which has live jazz and blues. Not the best band ever, but worthwhile.

_______________________

Yorkshires: I also make a fabulous yorkshire pudding (Alexa -- do you have a british grandma too?) The closest I have found are the popovers at Normandie Inn in Potomac. They are bigger than a yorkshire pudding, but they have the right flavor.

Alexa: I am British thruandthru.

_______________________

For Williamsburg: My family has been going to the Trellis restaurant for years as a special treat. We're all vegetarians and they always have a really inventive and delicious veggie entree. Also good beer and wine list. And if it is a nice day, sitting outside on the Colonial mall area is good people watching.

Jen: Boy, you Williamsburgers are everywhere today. The only reason I didn't recommend The Trellis is that it's a bit pricey, especially with a larger family. If you're not on a tight budget, go for it. Or try it for lunch, which tends to be cheaper.
Thanks for the reminder.

_______________________

GURUS, Protector's of D.C.: I have read your chats for a while now, and it seems when anyone takes a shot at DC nightlife, the boring people, the lack of decent scenery, the drudgery of politics or anything else in the city, the GOGS dismiss their remark as heresy and fire back with blanks.

You guys have excellent ideas for what is available around here, but if people make very true and accurate statements about the poor DJ's, unfriendly people, traffic, bad food or whatever, I would expect to hear a "you are right" or something better than "Have fun in New York!;"

Joe: You are right. Seriously, you are right. Every city has elements of lameness. But it's also true that if a city isn't doing it for you, you either have to accept it, do something to change it, or roll.

_______________________

Dupont: Hello GoGs!;!; Im totally craving a lobster roll!; What is the best one in Arlington or DC??

Thanks!;

Alexa: Doesn't Kinkead's boast a goodie.

_______________________

Rockville, Md.: Looking for a bachelorette party alternative for a friend who's not into all of the usual crazy bachelorette party stuff. Was thinking a spa day, but it could get expensive and with about 10 of us, would prefer an activity where we can all hang out together rather than get spa services in separate rooms. Any suggestions for a group of 20-somethings that would be fun and under $100, but not over-the-top?
Thanks!;

Maura: How about a baseball game? Kind of a leap from a spa day, but you could all grab some cheaper seats and still have a blast.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: You guys always answer questions about where to get haircuts, manicures, etc. But what about a great (like deep tissue) massage for under 100 bucks?

Janet: A 50-minute deep-tissue massage is $80 at Sugar House Day Spa in Alexandria. Enjoy.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hiya!; I have a "date" tonight and I'm looking for something brainy for us to do. Can you suggest any lectures or cultural event/performances for tonight? (And that individual who went on and on about New York...if you've been here for five years and haven't realized they are totally different cities, you're about four years over due for a move!; I used to live in London and I don't run saying this isn't London. Sheesh)

Maura: Thursdays are a great night for museums. Both the Corcoran and the Phillips stay open late and right now offer two worthwhile options -- the Corcoran Biennial and Modigliani at the Phillips.

_______________________

Motown, D.C.: Hi Gurus,

Happy Thursday!;

A strange question, but if I can't ask you guys, who can I count on?

My girlfriend is obsessed with motown music, I guess because it relaxes her after a crazy day at work and school.

Do you guys know of any bar / lounge / cover bands that may play this music? The only thing motown related I know about is the Four Tops concert at Wolf Trap this summer.

Thanks!;
Motown searcher, D.C.

Fritz: I've heard quite a few Motown covers at the New Vegas Lounge, and the bands are always tight. That's one place where you can get your dance on.

Last place I heard some Motown at a DJ night was at the Wag (1st Saturdays at the Black Cat), and I used to go to two or three soul nights a week in London, so I'd hit them if I could. I've been to some handdancing events at places like the Solar Eclipse, and they're always fun.

_______________________

RE: Dateaholic: Perhaps instead of complaining, you should take charge of planning the date. Very 2005, don't you think? Men/boys sometimes need an education and you sound like a good one to give it to them!;

Joe: Good suggestion.

_______________________

Girl Complaining about dates...: I have the same problem, but I think what's going on is that the guy chooses to go somewhere that they feel COMFORTABLE in on the first date since they're probably already nervous as is....I also just don't think they are aware of the resources available to help pick out a good restaurant. Men can be quite lazy.

Joe: Yes, men are lazy.

_______________________

Dupont Circle: Any word on Palette? I was there several months ago (oy, maybe even a year) and it was dead for a Thursday happy hour - I really liked the atmosphere but didn't think there was much of a scene to go back. Do you know if its busier now?

Fritz: In my experience, it's never been much of a scene, sadly, outside of Friday happy hours. But I'll go back for the excellent drink menu.

_______________________

Annandale, Va.: Hi GOG's- Its great to have you as a reliable resource!;

I was wondering if you could give me some direction- I'm graduating in May (the 8th to be exact) and I need a place to have lunch after the ceremony (around 12:30-1:00)it will be for about 15 people and the kind of food prefered: latin, american, italian. We will be in the DAR constitution Hall area.

Thanks!;

Alexa: The Oval Room? A walk, but everything is.

_______________________

Re: Yoox: I just hopped over to the Yoox site 'cause I love to look at international fashion. But, can I ask Janet,how do you afford those clothes on a Washington Post salary?
Those are some crazy prices!;

Janet: I didn't say I bought the clothes; I just take a look and try to find my European designer pieces at more affordable places like Loehmann's and Filene's Basement.

_______________________

RE: VHS to DVD: I was just going down 7 to Copeland's the other night and passed by Belmont TV (across the street from TGIF's and Five Guys on 7 near 395) and noticed they had a sign up that said they did the conversions. A lot of video places do it as well (www.suburbanvideo.com)

Jen: Whatever you want, think Belmont. That's their theme song for a reason.
Thanks for the tip.

_______________________

Washington D.C.: This is in response to the person asking about Euro fashions. My fave London shoe store Faith definitely ships to U.S., and is having their mid-season sale right now. www.faith.co.uk.

Janet: Thanks for the tip on that. Appreciate it.

_______________________

Silver Spring, Md.: Anyone else excited about the Jimmy Eat World concert at the Bender Arena???!;!;!;

David: Lots of people with braces?

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hey guys,
Where can a U of I alum find other Illini alums to watch the Sweet Sixteen? Preferably Adams Morgan/Dupont Circle/Downtown areas.

Fritz: I'll throw this out there, but I've heard there have been large Illini cheering sections at the Crystal City Sports Pub.

_______________________

Re: WAshington, D.C.: I agree that the nightlife in DC is lame, but I think it's really the overall culture here that's to blame. In NY, people generally believe in playing as hard as they work. Haven't found that here overall. Having to keep an eye on your watch when you should be having fun so that you don't miss the metro and have to catch a $50 cab to your apt. which is less than 3 miles away doesn't help either!; 24 hour subway is soooo in order!;

Joe: More debate fodder.

_______________________

Wine festivals: I always have Thursday meetings and miss you guys live so here's my question -- way, way early!; Do you have a local wine festival schedule yet? I've never been to one and this winter seems to be dragging on and on and I'm ready to spend some time outside in the "country". Thanks and love the chats!;

Anne: The St. Michael's Food & Wine Festival is at the end of April, and Wine in the Woods at Merriweather is coming up in May. Mount Vernon's spring wine festival is on May 20. Bide your time til then with some wine happy hours or trips to these vineyards.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: to preppy hill girl- Bossa has live music too!

Fritz: Yep. But also a cover charge. I think Nicki Gonzalez played there recently, though.

_______________________

Easter gift: The boyfriend's parents do live out of town, but he gift is more for his grandma, so wine might not be the best. I know she digs chocolate, so is there any place in Bethesda that has tasy treats. Sorry to restrict the shopping locale, but I'm running out of time!; Thanks!;

Janet: Periwinkle is in upper NW, not very far from Bethesda, and the store has wonderful chocolates and other sweet confections lusciously wrapped.

_______________________

For the VHS to DVD Transferer: I have used and had great results from MovieLab in Rockville, MD (301) 770-0496

Jen: Another suggestion for our DVD person. Thanks very much.

_______________________

Adams Morgan, D.C.: Hello GoG's!!
Fritz,
I followed your suggestion (from the article you wrote regarding bars to watch the NCAA tournament)--and checked out 51st state for the Nevada vs. Illinois game. My boyfriend loved it because it was EMPTY, so we were able to sit right in front of the very large flat screen. However, EMPTY is not my idea of a good time. When I watch a basketball game I want there to be shouting, cheering, camaraderie. So I was wondering, does it ever get crowded enough so that you feel like you are in a social setting? On a plus side, the bartender and waiter were reallly nice. The place just seems more like a neighborhood quiet spot than a place to watch basketball games (just my .02cents).

Fritz: Depends on day, time and team, I guess. If you want shouting and cheering, I'm still heartily recommending the Crystal City Sports Pub above all comers.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hey Gurus!; I'm appealing to your wisdom. I have some older relatives coming to town who don't walk around very well. Any suggestions for restuarants in NW (or beyond) that have parking on-site or close-by so we can drive them door-to-door and then not have to circle around looking for street parking? As for type of food, they are very much "meat and potatoes" kind of people. Thanks a lot!;

Maura: Washington, you might look for a more quiet spot too, in case anyone is harder-of-hearing. If you don't mind travelling a bit into Maryland, you might try La Ferme in Chevy Chase, a pretty setting with an adjacent parking lot.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Date-aholic,

Maybe the dive bars are all that your worth.

Joe: Ouch. That's not very nice.

_______________________

Washington D.C.: Hi GoG's, love this column. I'm looking for cool second hand stores in the city that don't only carry designer labels (chanel, etc.). Needs to be metro accessible. Any thoughts??

Janet: How about Polly Sue's in Takoma Park. They specialize in vintage. Or Alex in D.C., which carries new, vintage and consignment.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Since I'm going on a date this weekend with a new girl from DC - where does the "date-aholic" suggest take my date? I'm open to any suggestions - day or night activities.

Joe: Maybe your date is with the date-aholic? Lots of pressure now.

_______________________

Re:Glover Park, DC - 14yr old: Hello...take her to the Cherry Blossom Festival April 9th!;

Maura: Another idea.

_______________________

Silver Spring, Md.: Speaking of hair salons - are there any in the area that do Black hair? And do it well!;

Janet: There's Bill Lawrence in Adams Morgan that I've heard good things about. Also, Hair Rage. Let me know if you try one of them.

_______________________

Arlington: To the person looking for European fashions online, if they're on more of a budget, I'd suggest La Redoute for some cute and really affordable stuff!;

Janet: Thanks, Arlington, I had forgotten about La Redoute.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Hope you can shed some light... what is the deal with the Birchmere "bandstand"? Is it a different venue or room from the usual quiet seated room at Birchmere? I ask because I am contemplating tickets to see Tift Merritt there in April- I heard her live show totally rocks (starring DC hometown guitar hero Brad Rice!) but Birchmere shows usually seem to be rather subdued. So does the "bandstand" thing mean they take the seats out or something? I want to get the full rock effect and don't know if I should wait til they come back to another venue.

Joe: Hello DC,

The Birchmere actually has two separate venues. Most of the shows take place in the seated room. That seats about 600. The bandstand is the big room that you go through to get to the main venue. You can sit or stand at shows in the bandstand and there's a big space in front of the stage where people often dance, depending on the show.

Columbia Heights, D.C.: What's the best sushi restuarant in DC? Any special sushi happy hour deals you great gurus can recommend?

Alexa: Sushi-Ko? Makoto? I'm not so sure about the happy hours, though Cafe Asia has a 5:30 - 7:30 , $1 nigiri, reduced price rolls and $2 beers. Also Uni, a Sushi Place.

Dull Dates: A firestorm of truth. It's not that hard to choose Matchbox over Cheesecake Factory, or to avoid the dive bars (which are usually an effort to meet up with the rest of the crew later). If you ask someone out - girl or guy, you should put some effort in.

Fritz: Okay, see, you had me agreeing with you on the first part.

But when I'm on a date -- especially early on -- I like taking a girl to someplace low-key (i.e. what many people might think is a dive), because I'd like to get a seat and talk to her. Isn't that what you're supposed to do? I mean, I don't think I'd take a woman to IndeBleu on a Friday night date, for example, because the music is often loud enough to preclude conversation, and you have people brushing past you to get to the bar. That's not conducive to getting to know someone and have a good time.

Now, though, I'm sure I'll hear from dozens of women who would love it -- just love it -- if their boyfriends took them to dates at IndeBleu.

MOTOWN: I heard some great live motown at JoJo's on U

Fritz: Thanks. What night?

Bethesda, Md.: Oh most wonderful and wise Gurus:
I heard on the radio that Dream has been the site of some violence (fights & stabbings). Enough so that the cops have nicknamed the club 'nightmare'. Is this true? The club sounds really nice and grown up, but I'm very concerned about safety. Would you think a late-20-something petite woman could safely go alone? (I'd be traveling by Metro.)

Maura: Bethesda, we definitely recommend you do not walk from the Metro to Dream (it's a hike for one and not safe for walking alone at night). Fritz says many people Metro to New York Ave and then cab to the club and you shouldn't have trouble grabbing a cab right from the club back to the Metro/home.

Boy Meets Shoes, D.C.: I'm clueless when it comes to buying nice shoes. Anyone have any suggestions to where I can buy nice, fashionable, but affordable formal shoes?

Janet: In my opinion, when it comes to selection, you can't go wrong with Nordstrom. They also have frequent sales so you can get a deal.

16th & U: Couple of quick follow ups...To folks looking to watch some of the World Cup Qualifiers, the Scotland vs Italy game is being shown on RAI (in Italian), so bars don't have to charge the cover. I'll be at the Lucky Bar weeping at how low Scotland have sunk since the days of Souness and "King" Kenny Dalgleish.

Also, to the fun-loving guy who wrote in to complain about how lame DC is...Get a life, son. DC is not as happening as NYC, and few places are. So move there. See yer. Also - stop using the phrase "get my party on."

Fritz: 1. When you're upset because Paul "Mini-Me" Dickov is injured, your team is in horrible trouble.

2. Word.

Annandale, Va.: hi gurus,

thanks in advance..

Anne: Great Falls Park is a prime attraction for its views of the Potomac as it narrows and drops. Closer to you, there's an easy nearly 4-mile trail looping around Lake Accotink.

Alexandria, Va.: Response: Deep Tissue Massage
Affordablemassage.com has a location in Alexandria. Several massage therapists on staff but I recommend Steve. 1 hr massage $50.00. Can't beat it!; Absolutely wonderful.

Washington, D.C.: My brother and his wife have a peculiar liking for the bizarre medical museum at walter reed. has security made admittance to that museum especially difficult?

David: It's a little tricky, but nothing unbearable. First off, be ready for your car to be inspected. Also, every adult needs to have ID. You'll also need your car's registration and insurance ID card. Make sure they haven't expired. And no bags or anything like that. Other than that, enjoy the preserved fluids!

The Going Out Gurus: By the way, I'm still looking for Bartender of the Month candidates. Thanks. -- Fritz

Eastern Market: Is Eastern Market's flea/furniture market out Saturday AND Sunday, or just one or the other?

Also, I haven't been to their food market in a while. Can I get some fish there to cook for dinner and veggies to go with it?

Janet: My foodie colleagues say Sunday's the better day to go to Eastern Market tho it's open both weekend days, and, yes, you can fish to bring home and cook.

Washington, D.C.: Maura, I know that you adore going to teas and I would definitely appreciate you and the audience's help. It's a mid-twentysomething friend's birthday and I'd like to take her to a frilly, girly afternoon tea on Saturday. What's the best venue for this?

A thousand thank yous.

Maura: I just blogged about the tea at the Willard (the cherry blossom decorations are perfect for spring). Janet, Alexa and I adored our tea at the Mandarin Oriental -- absolutely delightful -- but I have a soft spot for the Jefferson Hotel's tea. Very cozy and memorable (not too mention maybe the best scones ever).

_______________________

Dupont Circle: I'd like to meet my honey for a "swanky" happy hour tomorrow afternoon downtown. Any suggestions?

Fritz: Swanky as in cocktails in a classic setting, or just cocktails?

I'd say Topaz and Firefly for the former. For classics, the Library Lounge or the Round Robin Bar.

Re: Trellis: Don't go to Trellis in Williamsburg!; I went last summer with my mom to splurge on a great meal. The food took two hours (we noticed patrons getting food to go because they had waited too long) and we had a very unapologetic manager. We finally got up and left hungry but with a very bad taste in our mouths.

Jen: Really? I've been to The Trellis many times and never had that sort of experience. That's too bad. I apologize as an unofficial surrogate for the unapologetic manager.

WD.C.: Well, I have the opposite problem as the girl who was intimidated by the AdMo nightlife. I live there. I go out there (in fact, it's a challange to get us to leave the zip code). Have done all the places you mention -- Bossa, Toulouse, Rumba. etc. Some places we hate and/or would never go include Left Bank, Angry Inch, Millie and Al's, Adams Mill, Saki/Chloe (nothing against these places...well, ok, maybe!;). So, do you have any new and unusual Adams Morgan suggestions for the bored local? Low key, not too many 20-somethings?

Joe: Sorry, this really isn't an answer to the question, but this is my pet peeve about people really calling Adams Morgan "AdMo." Can't we just accept that DC isn't NY? Let's not get in to a NY abbreviation thing with all of our neighborhoods. I'm dreading the day when people use names like NoMa, GloPa,ClePa, AnaCo without appropriate sarcasm.

For the little sister photographer:: My husband and I did a "Washington Photo Safari" where a pro photographer escorted us around the monuments on a Sat morn for a 1/2 day. He showed us how to take good shots (w/our own cameras - i have a simple digital), where to stand in regards to the light, how to position someone in the frame, etc...He really showed us where at each monument we could get the best shots - and he knew lots of history and trivia. It was really fun and different. Do a search on the web to find him. He's also done classes through Smithsonian Associates. Could be a good idea to take the artsy little sister while she's in town.

Maura: I'm not sure what the cost is these days, but here's a Post article on Photo Safari.

Washington, D.C.: Hey Gogs,
One of my friends is coming to town from the 28th to the 1st, and I can't take all those days off to go sightseeing with him. What are some good things to tell him to check out? Besides the usual monuments, Smithsonian, Mall, Capitol, White House, I thought of the Spy Museum and the new Dulles Air and Space Museum. He's never been here before and won't have a car. Thanks!;

Anne: You have the right idea. Give him a map and a Metro pass, and suggest a few broad neighborhoods to explore. The Mall will take a few days. Other ideas: start at the National Cathedral and walk along Mass Ave to Dupont, taking in the embassies and special memorials along the way. Penn Quarter is booming with shops and restaurants. To get to the Udvar-Hazy Center without a car, he'll need to pay to ride the shuttle from the Air and Space Museum on the Mall. The National Cherry Blossom Festival will be in full swing while he's here, too, so he can take advantage of free daily performances at the Tidal Basin, too.

Center of D.C.: For the Bach'ette party suggestion -- I did a "high tea" party for everyone involved at the Ritz. We all had fun, enjoyed the "ladies who lunch", and were able to sit and talk for a couple of hours.

Maura: Of course! How could I neglect tea? And if cost is a problem, there might be less expensive options than the Ritz.

In defense of Gurus and D.C.: Could it be the Gurus often dismiss the lameness complaints because the complainers seem lame themselves? (If you hate the DJs, you could consider hitting the many live-music venues that showcase lesser-known but talented bands for less than $15, for starters...) There's plenty to complain about here, but like with any other city, just as much to enjoy.

Fritz: You hit the nail on the head. If you don't like the house music DJs at the Blue Room (this is just an example), then go to Red. Or Five. Or Andalu. Or the Sanctuary. Etc. Etc. If you're tired of DJs, go see a band at the Warehouse Next Door, Galaxy Hut or even a show at one of the Ethiopian places on U (have you seen a band at Roha while drinking dark Heineken?) If you want out of smoky bars, hit a First Friday art crawl.

It's easy to fall into a rut -- I do it myself -- but after doing this job for years, I think people who complain about the lack of things to do around here have no one but themselves to blame.

_______________________

U Street: I have to agree with the girl in Dupont about the lack of dating creativity out there. Being a guy who's been in DC for a while, I see that there are so many great, non-traditional date options out there. But also, girls need to be open to going outside the box when the guy thinks that way. Dive bars are clearly out, but what are girls looking to do to get beyond dinner and a movie?

Fritz: Ladies? Come on. We want to know.

_______________________

Olney, Md.: Hey, is there a restaurant in town where I can spot celebrities??

Alexa: Even if there aren't any celebrities, it always feels like there are at Cafe Milano on a Friday or Saturday night. Having said that, however, there often are. And it's hilarious.

_______________________

Adams Morgan: Thank you Joe!; So well said. Honestly, is it so difficult to say or write "Adams Morgan?" I hate it when people abbreviate things for no reason.

Joe: Tks.

_______________________

Washington D.C.: Hi GOGs, going to St Michaels for the weekend. Is there anything on the way worth seeing? Any good restaurants in the town itself? Thanks!;

Janet: It's worth going to the Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, and if you want an extra-special (and expensive, I must admit) place to eat, it's 208 Talbot.

_______________________

For Date-a-holic: Maybe you should go on fewer dates, i.e., only go out with a guy if you really, really like him. Then, you won't really care where he takes you -- you'll just be happy to be going on a date with him.

Joe: Another thought.

Alexandria, Va.: Hi GOGs!; Love your chat. Looking for a cool, diverse "lounge-y" type place to try out this weekend. Preferably on Friday night. 3 Black Females looking to unwind, relax and have a cocktail. Possibility of being able to sit down would be great!;

Fritz: Have you been to Restaurant Kolumbia? I've heard good things about the every-other-Friday late-night happy hour. Hip-hop DJ, drink specials. It used to be La Tarbouche... I'd also say JoJo, since we were just taking about it, and maybe Helix or the new Cloud.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: To the date-aholic,

First, have you tried making a suggestion to your date on where you would like to go.
If your paying the tab then complain. Otherwise I wouldnt really worry to much about it.

Joe: We'll pass this on.

Capitol Hill, D.C.: This is more consumer related than social, but I wasn't sure who else to ask. Maybe a reader has had a similar experience. I went to a new place to get my eyebrows waxed (now, regrettably) and sure enough, my waxing fear come true -- two days later and I have little moon shaped burn marks under my brows. Ouch. I am assuming that they will heal and vanish in a few days (anyone? hot wax burns? do they go away?) but I also wonder if I am at least entitled to a refund for the waxing? Are they liable for this, or is it wax at your own risk? Or do I just let it go and stick to my tried and true waxer in the future?

Janet: Argh. That's terrible. If I were you, I'd go back to them and show them the burns. Were you using any cream at the time that made your skin super sensitive?

RE: Washington, D.C.: I think that Joe handled the lame shot taken at DC nightlife very appropriately.. He obviously likes it here, so why would he agree that DC is lame??...It is also annoying how people love to compare DC and NY, claiming the latter is better. If people love NY so much, why in the world are they in DC, and furthermore, why do they even bother to read the GOGs chat...??

Joe: It's also possible to love both. Though my hometown of Philadelphia is still closest to my heart.

Arlington, Va.: Looking for a recommendation for a jewlery repair shop that restrings pearls - I have an everyday freshwater pearl necklace/bracelet, but also my Greatgrandmother's pearls that all need to be restrung.
Thank you!;

Janet: I have had good luck with Boone & Sons Inc. Jewelers, where I had a necklace and a pearl bracelet restrung.

Harrisburg, Pa: Do you still need to get advancwed tickets to the American Indian Museum?

Maura: If you're going on a weekend or holiday, you might. Otherwise show up early in the day (within the first couple hours) and expect to get tickets for later that day. Keep in mind the museum opens at 10 am on Sundays.

_______________________

D.C.: Thanks for the Birchmere help!; Speaking of live venues, is the new Rams Head really better than 9:30? Haven't seen anybody that exciting on their line-up yet though.

Fritz: I don't know if I'd say it's better, but I've only been there twice. It's larger, it has better sight lines (I think) and more seats downstairs, but it's kind of ... shiny and pretty. It feels more like what would happen if you let the Rams Head make over the 9:30.

But I've not been wowed by the lineup, either -- especially not enough to make me drive to Baltimore to see a show there, which is something that they're counting on, to some degree.

Potomac, Md.: for the guy looking for cooking classes: the participation classes at L'Academie de Cuisine in Bethesda are great.

for Capital Hill girl: Bossa is great, but so is Anzu (but no live music, sorry)

VHS->DVD transfer: Check the Sunday Source archives; there was an article about that a few months ago

Second hand stores: Glad Rags in Takoma Park is great too.

And for the massage: Skin Beauty Lounge is great!; Nora is also the BEST for bikini waxes.

Maura: Thanks, Potomac. For VHS-DVD, here's the how-to from the Source.

Adams Morgan Girl: Hmmm...the only reason I said AdMo in my post is because Fritz did!; I've never said or written it before in my life.

Glover Park Girl: hi gurus..submitting early this time..i need to get my knee high boots fixed. The bottom plastic thing on the heels seems to have worn off and the metal within the stiletto is grating on the pavement and it is uber noisy and annoying. Janet: Sorry, I don't have good recommendations around D.C.? I go to Fortuna in Bethesda, which is not cheap. Anyone else?

downtown: hey there. a while back, I think Fritz mentioned somewhere that served great cherry sidecars (yes, I know a mutation of a classic) but I can't remember the specifics. can you help me out?

Fritz: 15ria, if they're still on the cocktail menu. If not, try getting Jeff at Palena or Derek at Firefly to make you one.

From Dull Date: Depends on your definition of dive bar. For many this includes Millee & Als, Common Share, etc. Not quiet, get to know you places.

Fritz: It's all a matter of perspective.

Not NYC: I grew up in NYC and the poster is right this isnt NYC. But I love this town. Been here for more than 5 years and I'm still discovering. I think thath's the trick with DC. You have to be open to trying new things. I love Barrack's Row. An ex-gf introduced me to the SW waterfront, recently I've been to 18th St. Lounge and Indebleu for the first times. Not gonna be staples all the time for me but I enjoyed them.

Fritz: You're my kind of person, Not NYC.

_______________________

Born and raised, D.C.: Having lived in DC my whole life I get frustrated with the whole 'transplant' population. Every bar I go to, it feels as if I am the only 'true' local. Can you recommend a bar/club in DC where patrons actually know the difference between the inner and outer loops??

Fritz: The Raven (to a degree), Zack's, Lil' Pub ...

_______________________

New Irish Place in Adams Morgan: Just wanted to give a shout for the new Irish place in Adams Morgan (cannot remember the name). So it's not even close to an authentic Irish pub, but the owner was working his bottom off getting people drinks quickly, keeping good tunes on the jukebox, had all the NCAA games on and seemed so psyched to be running his own place. My friends and I had fun and I'll definitely stop back.

Fritz: Ah, T.S. Muttley's. I agree with you. It's not Irish, but it has games and $3 beers on a Saturday night, which is enough to make me come back every now and then.

_______________________

Adams Morgan: For the Adams Morgan resident looking for some place to hang out (although really, they should be kicked out for referring to it as AdMo....)what about Asylum? Chief Ike's during the week, Toledo Lounge, downstairs at Blue, Bukkom...really there are tons of places to check out, visit them all (well for you safety I would avoid a couple). And as with most areas and bars, the bars in Adams Morgan are vastly different Sunday through Wednesday (even Thursday sometimes) than what they are on the weekend. Some place you might hate on a Friday or Saturday, could be perfect for a Tuesday night cocktail.

Joe: More tips. Thanks.

What girls like for dates: My boyfriend took me to the Cap Lounge our first date, and we had so much fun he took me to Black Cat for the second date that very same week. His first gifts to me were CDs and concerts T-shirts, and you know what? It's been almost 2 years and I'm in heaven.

Ladies, if you keep thinking a guy has to be extravagant in order to win you over, you're going to end up with some pretty limited date options.

Fritz: Good advice.

Admo???: So should we call you Joseph for now on? I think abbreviating names is so lame too.

Joe: Yes, Joseph from now on. Thanks.

Re: Cheap downtown: Cafe Asia actually isn't anywhere near the Reagan Building.

Try Matchbox, Ella's, Harry's. John Harvard has good happy hour specials, and even Gordan Biersch is acceptable if none of these sound good.

Fritz: Matchbox seems pretty far from Reagan -- about as far as Cafe Asia, if not farther -- but I second happy hour at Havard's.

Date-aholic: Well well. Thanks for posting my rave about the GOG blog and my frustration in dating.

1. I have been asked to plan the date, and when I did it was fine, but then I was asked to plan the 2nd, and 3rd, and then a girl loses interest, ya know. It's the first date, and it might be 2005, but I'd like a little help.

2. I love dive bars any other time of the week, but sometimes a first date should be a little special, unless it's NCAA, in which I'd be happy with Porters...love that bar too!;

3. I just saw a date idea this morning, the Ritz in Gtown offers "Dinner and a Movie" all for just $39.50. Including Valet parking, movie and a 3 course meal on their rooftop.....interesting and a bargain!;!;!;

KUDOS to the GOGs, I love you all!;

Joe: Glad we could be of help.

Re: Lameness: I have to agree with you guys. I have lived here for 6 years (went to American and now work on the Hill). FOr a long time I bought into the not alot to do here. But in the last two years I have discovered so many amazing things...new restaurants/bars/neighborhoods. Things like riding my bike down to the SW waterfront for steamed crab legs or getting a great sandwich at one of the wonderful delis or walking around and seeing a new area like Barrack's Row. I'm not a dance guy so I avoid it. The trick in this town is to find what you like. There are enough examples of what you may like to do: whatever it is to really enjoy this town. You just have to make the effort.

Joe: Another vote of confidence for the District.

Re: Dating: I understand what some people are saying about guys going to chains b/c they feel comfortable, but maybe date-a-holic wants guys who have a non-chain restaurant they're comfortable in. I know I feel that way. I'd rather you take me to the hole in the wall that's your standby and you like than a chain, even an expensive one.

There are good dives and bad dives, in my opinion. I love the Quarry House in Silver Spring cause it's comfortable. My rule of thumb would be, if it has good beer than I'll give it a shot and assume there's a good reason you like it. I agree I wouldn't want indebleu on the first date. But if you were my boyfriend and we were doing a fun night out I'd enjoy going for the hell of it.

Ideas: check out the museum calendars adn see if they have any interesting programs, ie the Library of Congress Pickford theater or a concert at the Smithsonian.

Fritz: I've been on dates to Quarry House and they were pretty fun. That's the kind of place where, if you didn't like it at least a little, I might question whether we should be dating (no offense). IndeBleu might be a good fifth date, or if you were really curious about the place after reading about it.

_______________________

The Going Out Gurus: OK, that's it. We're done. Thanks for all of your questions and comments. We'll get this DC/NY thing straightened out one of these days. See you next week. We may be doing a special program direct from the heart of AdMo.

Re: Restaurant Kolumbia: I just called over there, and they do not have a dj that plays hip hop every other friday. However, a jazz band plays there every other friday.

Fritz: Oops. Just wanted to get this out. Here's an [edited] e-mail I got from the chef-owner (but he's not the one who told me how much fun it is):

"... I like to rotate the entertainment - one week club, one week jazz. As we just did the live jazz this past Friday, we will be hosting a "club" this Friday, 3/25, with ... The Usual Suspectz. They spin urban hip-hop and some old skool R&B."

Doors open at 10:30, women free until 11.
