Aaron Marcinowski, a student at Davidsonville Elementary School, won first prize in the Foundation for Investor Education's InvestWrite essay competition.
Marcinowski, 10, was among 7,000 national competition entrants. The contest -- an outgrowth of the foundation's stock market game program used to teach students math, business and economics -- encouraged students to analyze the stock market and provide plans for using stock investments. Marcinowski won in the fourth- and fifth-grade category for creating a savings plan that would allow him to purchase a $26,900 Mazda Miata in eight years. For winning first prize he has been awarded a laptop computer, a trip to either Disney World or New York with his parents, and a $1,000 savings bond.
Bryana Keenan, Kamarin Knopf, Catherine Malone, Ian Jewett, Brett Johnson, Laura Washburn, Andrew Clements, Jamie Grimason, Gerritt Lang, Amanda Newell and James Osborne were recently named to Virginia Tech's Dean's List for the Spring 2004 semester. Keenan, of Riva, is a sophomore biology major. Knopf, of Riva, is a senior apparel, housing and resource management major. Malone, of Riva, is a senior psychology major. Jewett, of Severn, is a junior wildlife science major. Johnson, of Severn, is a junior mechanical engineering major. Washburn, of Severn, is a sophomore mathematics major. Clements, of Severna Park, is a senior accounting and information systems major. Grimason, of Severna Park, is a junior marketing management major. Lang, of Severna Park, is a senior ocean engineering major. Newell, of Severna Park, is a junior interdisciplinary studies major. Osborne, of Severna Park, is a senior architecture major.
Anne Arundel Community College President Martha A. Smith was recently appointed to the Educational Testing Service's National Community College Advisory Council. The Educational Testing Service develops services and products for community colleges. The organization intends to establish an Anne Arundel Community College scholarship fund and will contribute $3,000 to the fund for each year that Smith serves on the council.
Terrie L. Kowalewski of Millersville was recently appointed the student member of Anne Arundel Community College's Board of Trustees. Kowalewski, a 1987 graduate of the University of Maryland at Baltimore School of Medicine, has a bachelor's degree in medical technology and is studying interior design at Anne Arundel Community College. Kowalewski will be a voting member of the Board of Trustees and will represent the more than 54,000 students who attend the community college.
Midgett S. Parker Jr. of Annapolis was recently elected chairman of the Chesapeake Bay Trust's Board of Trustees. Parker, a lawyer and partner in the Bethesda-based law firm of Linowes and Blocher, is the first African American to hold the position in the trust's 23-year history. Parker hopes to expand the trust's grant-making programs and enhance the visibility of trust-funded projects.
