George Mason High School, in the city of Falls Church, and W.T. Woodson High School, near Fairfax City, are different sizes in different districts with different college-level programs. Yet each in its own way has become one of the best public high schools in the United States, and when looked at in that light, they turn out to be similar in one important way: Each assumes that American teenagers are ready for much more academic challenge than most schools would ever dare attempt.
