The Redskins got the ball at their 33 with 59 seconds remaining in the half, and Coles went 30 yards with a screen pass. A seven-yard completion to Canidate got the Redskins to the Eagles 30, and a pair of incompletions brought on Hall. He sent the ball through the uprights from 48 yards with five seconds to go in the half, and the Redskins went to the locker room trailing by 13-10.
They got even on their opening drive of the second half. Spurrier left his offense on the field for a fourth-and-one gamble from the Philadelphia 46, and fullback Rock Cartwright bulled for the first down. Hall connected from 45 yards to tie the score at 13.
Bryan Johnson comes off the field after recovering John Hall's onside kick with 1:13 left. The Redskins then drove 57 yards in five plays to score.

The Eagles had to punt but pinned the Redskins at their 16. The Redskins got a first down on a face-mask penalty against Philadelphia defensive tackle Darwin Walker. But a false-start penalty on Royal and a sack by Walker pushed the Redskins back to their 20. On a second-and-19 play, Ramsey tried to loft a screen pass to reserve tailback Ladell Betts. But Walker slipped inside rookie left guard Derrick Dockery and hit Ramsey in the arm and head just as the throw was released. The ball floated to Kalu at the 15, and the former Redskin made the grab and raced to the end zone.
"It was a poorly coached play, I'll say that," Spurrier said. "It was a horse-crap-coached play that turned the guy loose to hit Patrick."
The Redskins punted on their next two possessions, but didn't give up. They moved down the field, aided by a 15-yard personal foul on Walker for a late hit on Ramsey, and got to the Eagles 26. But Walker dragged down Ramsey from behind three yards shy of a first down on a third-and-10 scramble, and Hall's 37-yard field goal got the Redskins to 20-16 with 8:56 to play.
The Redskins defense nearly maneuvered the Eagles into a third-and-10 predicament. But defensive end Regan Upshaw was called for a personal foul to give the Eagles a first down, and McNabb scrambled for six yards and another first down on third and five from midfield. Westbrook (DeMatha High School) ran for five yards on third and three from the Redskins 24, then broke through the line on the next play and eased into the end zone.
Still, the Redskins didn't surrender. They got close enough for Hall to kick a 53-yard field goal, then got the ball at their 43-yard line with 1:13 to go when Bryan Johnson recovered Hall's high-hopping onside kick. Ramsey started with an eight-yard pass to wide receiver Patrick Johnson. McCants dropped a pass, but found an opening in the Eagles' secondary on a first-down play from the Philadelphia 32.
"I think we can play with them," Spurrier said. "But playing with them and winning are two different things."
