James Gist: The 6-foot-8 forward was rated only the 65th-best high school senior last season, according to the recruiting publication Hoop Scoop. But the freshman could have a significant impact in College Park sooner rather than later. Gist can jump, rebound and block shots, which is enough to please Coach Gary Williams and help Maryland plug its front-court holes.
Expansion: The football-driven decision to expand the conference essentially added two teams -- Miami and Virginia Tech -- that will finish at the bottom of the ACC this season. Plus, expansion forced a change in the round robin schedule, which had always created a true regular season champion. Now, some teams have advantages playing some opponents only once, but coaches aren't sure yet which teams made out the best.
