JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Nov. 14 -- David Garrard proved he's much more than just a scrambling quarterback.

Garrard threw two touchdown passes, including a 36-yarder to Jimmy Smith in overtime, to lead the Jacksonville Jaguars to a 23-17 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

Garrard, making his first start in nearly two years, finished 19 of 36 for 198 yards and added 42 yards rushing.

Fred Taylor had a season-high 144 yards rushing as the Lions were gashed on the ground for a second consecutive week and lost their third straight game.

Washington's Clinton Portis ran for 147 yards against Detroit last week.

The Lions (4-5) were even worse against Jacksonville (6-3), giving up 239 yards on the ground, but sent it to overtime because Eddie Drummond returned two punts for touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Drummond's first was a 55-yarder that gave the Lions their first points. Jason Hanson, who missed a 32-yard field goal in the second quarter, made it 17-10 in the fourth with a 21-yarder.

After the Jaguars failed to pick up a first down and run out the clock, Drummond returned another punt 83 yards for a score with 46 seconds left and, with the extra point, tied the game.

The Jags won the coin toss to start overtime, and Garrard and Smith did the rest. They hooked up three times for 69 yards on the winning drive.

Garrard played well in place of Byron Leftwich, who missed the game with a sprained left knee. It was quite different from Garrard's first start, the 2002 season finale against Indianapolis in which he was sacked three times, fumbled once and lost, 20-13.

He got help from the defense, too. Lions quarterback Joey Harrington was under a steady rush on nearly every passing play. He was 11 of 33 for 121 yards with an interception, and had his streak of games with at least one touchdown pass snapped at eight.
