PREPARE BEDS OR POTS FOR CULINARY HERBS. Most herbs are hardy but require well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, achieved with the addition of a little lime. Don't plant herbs in heavy clay soil or cover them with wood mulch. Wait until next month to plant sweet basil, which is tender.
