A friend recently bought a '70s Colonial in the Virginia suburbs with a kitchen typical of that decade: cherry cabinets, white appliances, white Formica countertops. Unable to renovate anytime soon, she updated with paint: a mossy Benjamin Moore green called Fraser fir (No. 503). Right away it warmed up the room, softening the fluorescent lights and creating an earthy, Mediterranean feel (especially after she unpacked her Italian pottery).
