Frank Herzog, who was fired as the radio play-by-play voice of the Washington Redskins in February after 25 years behind the microphone, will provide the call for the telecast of the Redskins' preseason game at Miami on Aug. 21. The telecast will be produced by Comcast SportsNet and televised by WUSA-9 in the Washington area.
Herzog called 498 consecutive games between 1979 and last season. In a move that caused an uproar among longtime Redskins fans, WJFK-FM replaced Herzog in the booth with Larry Michael, who previously handled the Redskins' pregame and postgame shows. Herzog remains the lead sports anchor at WUSA.
"I was kind of ambivalent about how much I should get involved," Herzog said. "This gives me every opportunity to get involved."
Herzog will be joined in the booth by Jeff Bostic, who played center for the Redskins from 1980 to 1993 .
The Redskins will play five preseason games in Joe Gibbs's second turn as Washington's coach. The Aug. 9 Hall of Fame Game against Denver in Canton, Ohio, will be nationally telecast on ABC. The Aug. 27 game at St. Louis will be televised nationally by Fox, with the three other games shown on WUSA.
Veteran broadcaster Mike Patrick will call the other two games on WUSA, with Bostic joining him for the Aug. 14 game against Carolina and former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann joining him for the Sept. 3 preseason finale against Atlanta.
