Got Plans?

The Going Out Gurus
of the washingtonpost.com Entertainment Guide
Thursday, February 3, 2005; 1:00 PM

Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.

Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.

Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

Submit your questions and comments before or during the discussion.

Editor's Note: Washingtonpost.com moderators retain editorial control over Live Online discussions and choose the most relevant questions for guests and hosts; guests and hosts can decline to answer questions.

_____________

The Going Out Gurus: It's Thursday. It's 1. It's Got Plans. I'm Fritz, and here to answer your questions are Jen (Movies/Theater), Joe (Music), Alexa (Restaurants), Janet (Shopping), Rhome (Everything) and David (Ditto). Maura and Anne will be joining us a little later. Because they seem to be popular topics, I'd like to point you to This Week in Nightlife, which has a rundown of some of the many Mardi Gras events happening this week, and my list of Places to Watch the Super Bowl. Now, on to your questions.

_______________________

Washington, DC: In order to get my apartment ready for entertaining friends, I'd like to finish putting up my pictures. However, there is one painting that is too big for a regular-size frame from a store. Can you recommend any stores where they do (cheap-ish?) framing? (I was thinking along the lines of a Michael's or something similar..) Thanks so much for your help!;

Janet: I think your instincts are right on this one; take a look at their website first to see if there's anything that suits you.

_______________________

Washington DC: Could you recommend good local jazz clubs are not terribly expensive.

Thanks
VR

Joe: The prices at Twins on U Street are usually pretty reasonable. And HR-57, on 14th Street NW, is dirt cheap. And you can bring your own booze. Both are good jazz places.

Chevy Chase, MD: This is not a going out question but a wedding-related question. I'm getting married in June, relatively early on a Sunday. I'm having big problems finding a salon in Montgomery County (Rockville preferably) that is open early enough on Sunday for me to go there and get my hair done. I need it open at 9am. Alternatively, can any of your chatters recommend a person that can come to me on Sunday morning in the same area and do my hair? A stylist they love or what not? Priced around $100? Thanks!;

Janet: Hi, there, Chevy Chase,
Congrats. Do you have someone who regularly cuts your hair? If so, you could ask that person to come to you; if not,
I know that Nadia at Jean-Paul Salon on Yuma Street has gone to customers to do their hair before weddings. Phone number there is 202-966-4600. Good luck.

Washington, DC: Question about Club Hop -- we have a decent sized mixed group going out on Friday night and thought Club Hop would be the way to go to avoid cover charges. I've heard different things about the ease of the whole process. Do you just RSVP on the website and show up at the Club?

Fritz: You RSVP on the Web site (absoluteaddiction.com), but you have to show up at Panache first to claim your wristband that will allow access to the other clubs (Vida, MCCXXIII, Ozio, etc.). It's a good way to avoid cover charges, yes, but there are still plenty of lines when you try to "hop," especially as the evening goes on.

Shaw, DC: Hey GOGs!;
Saw that there is a Flamenco Festival being held at GW. If I had to pick one or two nights to check this out, which would be the best and how do I get tickets?

Thanks
From a Flamenco Fan!;

Jen: I'm honestly not sure which night would be best, but if you like flamenco, my guess is that you can't go wrong. You can get tickets via Ticketmaster.

Need Advice: This is not a typical question, but I thought I'd request your advice. My boyfriend just informed me that the only time he could get us a reservation on Valentine's Day is 5:30 (at the restaurant I wanted, or any really nice restaurant in DC). I'm upset with him because I've reminded him several times throughout the month to make the reservation well in advance because things would book up fast. I will never be able to get out of work in time to make our 5:30 reservation, and if I did I would feel rushed to get ready quickly then run to the restaurant - it would dampen the whole (early) evening. We can't celebrate the weekend before or any time during the week after. I am so upset that this is ruined because we didn't get New Year's Eve together due to other circumstances. Any suggestions? He's in the dog house right now.

Joe: Uh oh, where's Carolyn Hax when we need her. This is really a relationship question, isn't it? Maybe he's just not big on holiday celebrations. If he's great the rest of the year, I say cut him some slack. But if this is a regular thing with him, well......Carolyn?? Help.

_______________________

Veggieless City: In you alls expert opinion, what is the best restaurant in the city for vegetarian food?

Alexa: Despite the grumblings that vegetarians aren't sufficiently catered to in restaurants, I always think there are plenty of dishes to choose from at most Asian, Indian and Lebanese restaurants. Zaytinya, Cafe Asia, etc. But as to the very best, let's ask the group what they think ...

_______________________

Union Station, D.C.: Hey GOGs! Got the boyfriend coming in this weekend and since he's a big whisky fan, I want to take him to Bourbon. I'd rather make that more of the early portion of the night, and I was wondering, does Bourbon serve dinner? Is it any good? And, if not, could you please recommend a good dinner spot nearby? Thank goodness we're going to see some above-the-teens weather this week!

Fritz: Bourbon's food is actually pretty good, although they make use of lots of "bourbon barbecue sauces," etc. I like their bourbon chicken breast and crab cake. On the same block, there's Kavanaugh's Pizza Pub, which is pretty similar to the Faccia Luna it replaced; the venerable Heritage India; and my old standby, Austin Grill.

alt-rock is dead?: Rhome. My man. Usually you are spot-on but you missed the mark on the post last week, dude. Alt-rock ain't dead. Just like Electronica, it's just gone back to it's roots and has gone underground again (back to pre-90's levels). It's still a vibrant scene, though. For the poster looking for bars that play it, there a few stand-outs. Check out Dremos or Galaxy Hut in Arlington; or Angles, Toledo Lounge, or Bedrock Billiards in Adams Morgan. Personally, I go to U St. Besides the Black Cat right around the corner (good cheap shows and no problem with scalpers buying up all the tickets on-line like at 930), there is St. Ex, Local 16, DC9, and Velevet Lounge. Don't give up hope, man. There is still good rock out there. You just gotta look a little harder to find it. Peace.

Rhome: We're both right on this one, and I was a bit misinterpreted. Alternative as a genre designation is dead. What is it an alternative to when the sound it describes is mainstream? Just because it's no longer a useful term definitely doesn't mean that folks aren't cranking out the jams and rocking clubs. You can definitely find tons of that in this town.

_______________________

Poor and Broke: My boyfriend and I want to have a nice Valentine's Day, but sadley we have not alot of money. Do you have any romantic ideas of places to go/eat that doesnt involve spending a lot of money?

Jen: You could see a concert at Millennium Stage. Or you can check the TICKETplace listings to see if any discounted plays that interest you. I noticed that there are advance tickets available for "Contact," which might be a romantic option, though they are for Friday the 11th. Maybe you can celebrate a little early?

_______________________

Fort Washington, Maryland: Hello All!;!; I enjoy the chats very much and was hoping you all may be of some help....
As a gag gift every year for my husband I give him a "Adult Theme Cake" (i.e. a pic of a naked lady or some very well endowed set of breasts)for his birthday. Could you tell me of some bakeries in the area that do such cakes other than Tiffany's Bakery and Rolling Pin? I'm looking for something different, any ideas?

Alexa: Well. I do know that the bakery at Wegman's does reproduce photos on cakes, though I suppose they might balk at a nude pic. Perhaps you could take a photo of yourself in a bathing suit? I've seen the cakes and they are hilarious.

_______________________

Arlington, VA: Hi, Gurus. I'm looking for events relating to the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year. Any suggestions?

David: Here is our current list of Chinese New Year events, and we should be adding some more in the coming days. The one you'll definitely want to check out is next Sunday's Chinese New Year Parade, near the MCI Center in Chinatown. In addition to the parade there will be costumed folk dances and the lighting of a five-story high firecracker.

_______________________

Un-Valentines Day: Hello Gurus!; Me and a couple friends are in search of un-valentines day parties this year. As all of us are single (whether by choice or not) grumpy and bitter about the day, we're looking for some cool parties or bars preferably in Va or DC to hang out at. We already know about Voodoo at Spank, but do you guys know of anything else? Not necesarily the Vday itself, but anything that whole weekend since love will be constantly poluting the air. Thx!;

Rhome: There's the Broken Hearts Ball at the Blue Room, Sunday 2/13 from 8 to 2am. I got the info recently so I'll be making an event record very soon. There's no cover charge and the proceeds from a silent auction of local artists' work go to UNICEF. A source tells me that the last Broken Hearts Ball produced a marriage.

Washington, D.C.: Where is the best spot for Eagles fans to watch the Super Bowl on Sunday? Is there a pub or sports bar in DC that is known for attracting Philadelphia Eagles fans? Thank you.

Joe: Every bar with a television is going to be a great place for Eagles fans to watch the game. Because, of course, the Eagles will win on Sunday. If you're looking for other Eagles fans try the Park Bench Pub in Cleveland Park or the Rhino Bar in G'town. I'm sure there will be many others.

_______________________

Falls Church, Va.: Just go out another day. Do things based on your own schedule and your own life, not based on what Hallmark says (and on when the Romans celebrated Lupercalia).

Joe: Thanks Falls Church. I agree completely.

_______________________

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream: I have a craving for fried ice cream (maybe its all this snow.) Where can you get in our frigid city?

Alexa: Fried ice cream. I feel like I've seen it somewhere, but can't think. Is this a Latin American treat?

_______________________

RE: Valentines Day ruination: Everyone knows that V-Day at restaurants is amateur night!; Scrap the reservation (cancel now!;) and cook in instead. Or order carry out... go to Sutton Place... maybe he did you a favor!;

Joe: Another good idea.

_______________________

Indebleu:
I know you must be tired of Indebleu questions by now, but I'm wondering what people are wearing to the place after 10 or 11. I know the place supposedly will let you wear jeans, but what are people actually showing up in?

And any reviews on Chloe in Adams Morgan yet?

Thanks.

Fritz: I've seen lots of guys wearing (expensive-looking) jeans and nice shirts, and women wearing a mix of clubby attire and ESLoungewear. You can wear suits, as guys are doing that, too. Wear whatever makes you feel good about dropping $16 on a champagne cocktail.

I've been busy elsewhere this week, but hope to hit Chloe this weekend. Anyone have any first impressions?

_______________________

Birthday Girl, DC.: Hi Guys:

Please please answer my question. Today is my birthday and my friend has offered to take me out. I get to pick the place. Anyhere in DC is fine....somewhere with good food but a nice hype place would be great. (A place like Zaytania where people go to lounge but I have been there). Thank you so much for the chat. I enjoy it and never miss it. I really do hope you answer my question. Ciao!;

Fritz: One word: Indebleu.

_______________________

Re. the 5:30 V-day reservation: Get over it, Princess. Worse things could happen. If you keep up the pouting, the guy might dump you before Valentine's Day, and you won't have to worry about getting out of work early.

Joe: No comment.

_______________________

Re: Valentines advice: My two cents: Valentines day is arbitrary and promoted by businesses to make money. "Celebrate" your relationship this weekend, or in March or any time you feel like it. No need to go to an overpriced dinner on that day to do it. As for the boyfriend, if you can't stand his procrastinating then either don't date him or accept the fact that you will have to take charge of reservation making -- you picked the restaurant anyway! (And yes, I do have a boyfriend, I just think Valentine's day is stupid.)

Joe: Thanks for the advice.

A North Dakota Thank You: Just wanted to give a shout out to thank you for your NYC restaurant recommendations several weeks ago. My cousin from North Dakota and I tried Angus McIndoe and really enjoyed it.

Now for a question. I recently lost one of the marcasite stones in a ring I have. It is a fairly inexpensive ring, but I would like to get the stone replaced as it now looks like a one-eyed monster when I where it. Do you have any recommendations on places that may be able to put in a new stone? Thanks for your help as always.

Jen: I'm so glad you liked Angus McIndoe. I really enjoyed eating there, too; has a nice atmosphere and the staff seemed quite friendly. Now over to Janet for the second part of your question...

Janet: There's a place called Express Jewelers in Arlington; tel. no. is 703-351-7481. You can also try Kettermans Jewelers.

Washington, DC: Hi Gurus -

Happy Thursday!; My Mom is coming into town President's weekend and I want to take her to afternoon tea. How is it at the Mayflower? Do we have to dress up and wear hats and gloves? Is another place better? Send word!;

Thanks!;

Alexa: Here's an excellent list of tea spots. But add to it the afternoon feast at Cafe Mozu where three of us here had the best scones we'd ever had. And no, no hats or gloves necessary.

_______________________

V-day: Man, "Need Advice" should lighten up!; If she was so pressed about the reservations, she should have made them herself!; I wish we could warn the boyfriend he's in for a lifetime of this if he doesn't cut and run!;

Joe: Ouch. We seem to have touched a nerve.

_______________________

Washington, DC: I am looking for a place to go with live music (a la Jr. Cline & the Recliners - some oldies some original, good listening, some dancing) with some other couples in their 30's & 40s. Can you recommend somewhere in MD or NW DC? Thanks.

Fritz: New Vegas Lounge is a great option for you. For something a little rowdier, there's always Madams Organ.

_______________________

Washington DC: Hi GOGs! It's time for our monthly "girls night out dinner" next week. We've already been to Rosa Mexicano, Ortinique and Ceiba (and we've all done Zayatina seperately). Any suggestons for where to try next? Most of us work downtown so we try to stay around there. There are usually between 6 and 8 of us and we're pretty mellow, but like trying fun places.

Thanks!

Alexa: IndeBleu? Oyamel? CityZen. All these are hot new spots.

_______________________

17th Street NW: Happy Thursday! With my new job, I have also received coworkers I am actually happy to socialize with - woohoo! Any happy hour hotspots where 6-10 of us can sit, listen to each other talk, and enjoy some groovy drinks? Within walking distance of the Farragut metros is key. Thanks

Fritz: Have you been to Le Bar in the Sofitel? Often quiet, but fancy cocktails and a cool French decor. Karma is an option if you arrive early -- I like their drink menu -- and it's even closer to you, but the large seating areas fill fast. And if you go early, I'd recommend Eyebar, as there's no guest list until much later, and it's pretty chic.

_______________________

Dupont to the Circle: My wife is out of town this weekend, and I am planning on going to the Mall...any great new exhibits I should check out? And, where in DC can one find wine classes?

Maura: The National Gallery's new Andre Kertesz show opens Sunday. Fabulous photography. If you are itching to go downtown on Saturday, try Doodles, Drafts and Designs at the Octagon and the Frank Gehry show around the corner at the Corcoran. The latter closes this month and is worth a look.

As for wine classes, have you tried the Washington Wine Academy? They probably have the most offerings.

_______________________

Ashburn, Va: Hello!; I'm submitting early because I really need your help. I'm looking for a American or Asian restaurant that is hip, trendy, moderately priced and located in Dupont/AdamsMorgan/Downtown. Thanks!;

Alexa: Komi on 17th. Cafe Asia. Firefly, for American, would also suit I think.

_______________________

Alternative is dead: I think what the poster is looking for is "indie" rock. You're right. "Alternative" is dead as evidenced by HFS (RIP) playing Candlebox and other Nirvana rip-offs.

Rhome: So the P.C. term is now 'indie' rock! Makes sense, but are you sure the hipsters haven't already developed another term that has yet to filter to us bottom feeders? Indie rock to me is a term like 'underground', it just means folks don't know who you are and/or you're not on a major label.

_______________________

For 5:30 date...: My husband is a late planner too - and so some thoughts/questions for GOGs - where can boyfriend or hubby get dinner FROM and take it to super-romantic house/area/park (too cold??) so that you get great food, ambience, but don't have to eat at 530p?

Joe: Well, I'm hoping my wife will be excited about the bucket of Popeye's I'm bringing home. But that might not work for everyone. You could get sushi from a lot of good local sushi places. Or Thai. Or Pizza.

_______________________

A Plug, but it's for an important cause!;: Casablanca Restaurant in Old Town Alexandria is hosting a Tsunami Relief Benefit Party (It's also the return of Lemur Lounge via the new monthly - Vie de Lemur). All donations will go to benefit tsunami relief efforts. There will be raffles and other fundraising activities - and, good music!;

Rhome: You know we've got that covered in here. Can't be mad at do-gooder pluggage though.

_______________________

Arlington, VA: I'm going to a black tie gathering at the National Museum of Women in the Arts on Saturday. Since we'll be all dressed up a few friends and I would like to go grab a cocktail beforehand. What is a fun swanky bar close by (don't want to walk to far in the cold) where we won't look totally out of place in formalwear? It'll be around 6:30 or so.

Maura: You may not be surrounded by fellow formal-wearers, but a swankier spot such as Le Bar or the classic Round Robin Bar shouldn't leave you feeling too out of place.

_______________________

Silver Spring, MD: How is the Glen Echo Park ballroom in the winter? Is it heated at all? My bf and I were thinking of going to the swing dance event tomorrow. Any recommendations/advice?

Fritz: First things first: The swing dance is Saturday, not Friday.

Now, if I remember correctly, the Spanish Ballroom is neither heated nor air conditioned, but it doesn't matter -- there are hundreds of people dancing. Dress in layers, and you'll be fine. If you're going, make sure you arrive in time for the beginner lesson at 8 p.m.

_______________________

New apartment: How DO you hang your pictures if you don't want to hammer new nails in the wall that will make the last day of your lease a flurry of spackle and cussing?

Janet: If you're worried about doing damage to walls, your best bet is to find picture hangers with self-adhesive backing. That won't work well for something very heavy, but it will for lighter things. There is bound to be some residue, though. Alternatively, use lots of framed pictures on side tables. Anyone else have a clue?

_______________________

Hair stylist for the bride: I would highly recommend Perry Warren of Frizzles salon in the Springfield Mall. He did my wedding hair for $75 and will travel all over the city. He will do a free trial for you at his salon. He books up early so I would call soon.

Janet: For the bride who needs a traveling hair stylist, here's a suggestion. Thank you.

_______________________

Flumoxed, DC: You GoGs are the best. Here goes...
My date has challanged me to find something to do on Saturday that's free or nearly so (~$5)- I was thinking the botanical gardens or something, though I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on that and others?

Anne: The Botanic Garden is my favorite antidote to the short, grey days of winter, or really, any cold day when you're on the Mall. That's a first-rate idea. And you are right -- it is free. It's closest to the National Museum of the American Indian, the Mall's newest museum.

_______________________

Washington, D.C.: Good afternoon, Gurus. I'm going to a Tsunami Benefit concert at the Velvet Lounge this Saturday. Any word on the show? What's the venue like? Should I just donate the money online and save myself the evening? Thanks!;

Rhome: Velvet Lounge is a tiny comfy shoebox that really lets you get up close and personal with the performers. The sound is great and I've enjoyed shows there as a spectator and performer. The band lineup for Saturday isn't listed on the site but I can definitely endorse the Friday night lineup (RPM and DC Funk Squad). I'm always one to support the practice of taking a chance and checking out some new music. At the very worst you could end up at the bar downstairs meeting some new people, and your dough went to a good cause.

David: Saturday night's lineup is rock bands, with a bit of a punk leaning: Cab Assassin, Confidence Man, The Sentiment and Wait Till Friday. Can't say I know too much about any of them, but you can take a listen to Confidence Man on our MP3 site.

_______________________

Alexandria, Va: Gurus-

We're headed to the new Air and Space Museum at Dulles on Saturday and wonder how long to allow for our visit - a few hours? Most of the day? If it's any help, we both think Gravelly Point is the best free entertainment around.

Thanks.

Maura: In total, I'd assume it would take up half your day. Give yourself some travel time and a couple hours in the museum (more if you plan to take in IMAX). Why not make a day of it and settle in for lunch someplace in Leesburg? This very idea was mentioned in the recent GOG date planner.

_______________________

Alexandria, VA: To Veggieless---DC lacks sufficient veggie restaurants, but if you're willing to travel outside of the city Sunflower in Vienna is worth the trip and Thyme Square in Bethesda is pretty good.

Alexa: Yes, of course. Those.

_______________________

Arlington, Va.: Ok, this is a little weird, I admit, but if you knew the story behind it you'd understand... Do you know if there are any bars or restaurants in DC or Nova that were once a church, and still has a churchy feel to it. Any ideas? Thanks!

Fritz: Um, no. But that's why I love Church Brew Works in Pittsburgh. (Well, the beer is pretty good, too.)

_______________________

Not Carolyn, but ... : For the distraught V-Day poster -- the exact thing happened to me in the past, and it turned out fine. Just go out and buy yourself a nice outfit that can go from the office to dinner, ask your boss to let you cut out a little early (the worst he or she can do is say no), take some stuff to the office so you can freshen up, get to the restaurant and have a delicious cocktail if you need to relax. Things like this happen, and it's only a big deal if you let it be a big deal.

Joe: Ok, that's helpful. Thanks.

_______________________

Clarendon, VA: Re: late dinner reservation for Vday

I've always found that Vday at restaurants should be something to be avoided. Honestly....if Vday is about spending some quality time with your s.o., then why not put you own menu together of foods you really like or want to try and go grocery shopping, buy a nice bottle of wine for probably half the cost it would be at a "nice" restaurant, set up some candles and turn on some music- and ENJOY just being together? It's the way I have spent past Vdays and it was fun and intimate at the same time.

Alexa: Three cheers for you. Couldn't have said it more succinctly moi-meme.

Birthday help: GoG's I watch your weekly chat religously but am stuck on this one. Since EVERYBODY has a birthday around this time I'm trying to find something new & different for all my friends & I to do. Please no McFaddens, Mister Days, Saki, Tom Tom, Polly Esther's, 1223 (or other places like it)....
It'll be on Saturday night, ages 22-26, 60% guys, about 20-30 people. Looking for a place not very expensive (alcohol) where I don't have to buy a bottle/table or listen to trance. Willing to go anywhere within 20-30 minutes of DC. An open bar & rocknroll is a plus. We don't have to rent anything out, we could all just go there and take it over. Any recommendations is MUCH appreciated! Thanks guru's!

Fritz: Wait, you want an open bar but don't want to rent anything out?

_______________________

V-day: Wow, the 5:30 reservation is way out of line. As someone else suggested, a meal in (catered by Whole Foods, if you're not a cook) is much more romantic and practical than sitting elbow to elbow with every other high maintenance girl in the city, who insisted on being wined and dined.

Now, if ditching what you believe to be a special occasion and procrastinating are habitual, that's one thing. If he's "in the doghouse" because he couldn't get blood from a stone (which is what getting a restaurant reservation on one of the busiest restauarant nights of the year), give the poor guy a break. And wow, if he has discussed his doghouse status with his buddies, they totally, totally hate you now.

Joe: I wonder if our original poster knew what she was getting into. If you're still out there, Need Advice, write back.

_______________________

Fairfax, Va: Ok GOGs I need your help assessing a situation in this our fair city. What's the deal with 18+ clubs? I have never been to Nation or Platinum even though they look cool because they're 18+, but now even Home and Fur, two of my favs, are going to the youngsters. I'm a 26-year-old chick from the Midwest where you weren't caught dead in an 18+ club unless you were actually 18/19 (by 20 you've got a fake). Is there any hope of me having fun in these venues? Opinions please!

Rhome: If you're avoiding Nation for such a small trifle, you're missing out. Not only is their sound and lighting huge and they bring in the best dance music dj's in every style but they also have great live shows there. You might want to stop frontin' because D.C. isn't the Midwest. And of all the clubs you listed, Nation is the only one that is 18+ all the time, all the others only let in youngsters for specific nights. And if you like a high energy crowd and high energy music, they'll give you what you need without you having to worry about changing diapers. What else are you looking for in your clubbing experience? If you want fancy drinks and a calmer vibe, you'll just have to shift your paradigm from dance club to lounge.

_______________________

Defending myself (request for advice): I WOULD have planned myself if he hadn't assured me he was 'taking care of it' I have learned my lesson for the future - thanks for the posters who had positive advice and a big poo-poo to those who were so negative!; Can't a girl be excited to go out for ONE romantic evening?? Its not like I have to be taken out every weekend!; Geez...

Joe: Good for you for writing back and defending yourself. But I'm not sure we're allowed to say "poo-poo" in these chats.

_______________________

RE: Need Advice: Tony & Joes, Riverside Grill, and Cabanas all have nice views of the river and have delicious valentines day menus and they aren't booked. Are you only looking at the readers choice romantic restaurants?

Alexa: Thanks for this.

_______________________

Art Gallery Question: Is tomorrow the "first friday" thing? if so, where do I get details? Is there a can't miss place? thanks!;

Maura: Yes, tomorrow is indeed First Friday. A few worth seeing might be Scott Treleaven at Conner Contemporary, Joyce McCarten at Studio and Ellen Verdon Winkler at Washington Printmakers, but it's not too hard to see them all.

_______________________

Birthday Celebration w/ the Girls Saturday: Any suggestions for a classy though not stuck-up or college-saturated joint to meet for drinks and then go dancing (international mix for music)in DC? Has anything new opened up? Weary of the same-old, same-old (read: Dragonfly, ESL, Five, Local 16, 1223, Mie n Yu, Modern, Left Bank, etc.).

Fritz: Have you been to Indebleu? Not a LOT of dancing, but they have great DJs in the ESL/Modern vibe. I'd say Mantis and the remodeled Blue Room might also fit. Rhome and I think Andalu might work, because the DJs are good, but it can get a younger crowd on occasion.

_______________________

feenin' for fried chicken: Okay, please help!; Where can I find the best fried chicken in DC? Please not Georgia Browns, KFC, or Popeye's.

Rhome: I'm about to be 30 this year, and you know the stats on black men with hypertension and high cholesterol ain't sweet. I'm trying to be all about the green leafies and whole grains, gotta leave the fried goodies behind. I'm saying though, Popeye's might be the G.O.A.T. (since Church's isn't around this far north anymore and there's no Rascoe's Chickn & Waffles on the east coast).

Joe: Seriously, there is no better fried chicken than Popeye's spicy chicken right out of the fryer. And to help explain Rhome's answer for some of you, G.O.A.T. stands for Greatest of All Time. I think that pretty much sums it up.

_______________________

Fairfax, VA: We need your advice!; A group of 8 mid to upper 20's (half girls, half boys) want to go out to DC (Adams Morgan) this Saturday for dinner and drinks. We used to frequent the Reef until they stopped pouring Guinness!; We don't want to spend no more than $25 for an entree (excluding drinks and tip). We enjoy all kinds of food (Italian, Japanese, Thai., Korean, Meat, etc) and open to any suggestions. The ladies like cocktails but the boys love beer!; Where should we go?!; We would like to stay in Adams Morgan and visit couple of places. Thank you!;

Fritz: You stopped going to the Reef because they changed to a locally produced stout with flavor? That's harsh.

You probably won't get into Cashion's or Little Fountain on a Saturday for dinner if you haven't made a reservation -- though it's probably worth a call. Meze might work for tapas. The Grill From Ipanema? (Don't even think about Pasta Mia.)

For drinks afterwards, I like the downstairs of the Blue Room, which has big new booths, good bartenders and now like 20 beers.

Burke, VA: My wife and I go out once a month on a Saturday night when we can get a baby sitter. We seem to have run into bad luck if we plan anything. Whenever we have gotten advanced tickets for anything, our baby sitter has cancelled on us and we lose our money for the tickets. Thus, we need to plan for things at the last-minute. Since we are paying $$$ for a babysitter, we want our entertainment options to be cheap and local (trips to downtown DC take too long for us). We know about movies and we will not go to bars/rock clubs as we cannot handle cigarette smoke and the noise. Are there cheap places in northern VA where we can see something "cultural" or simply hang out in a cool place on a Saturday evening?

Anne: I'd look into the cultural events at George Mason University. The Center for the Arts has low-cost student shows, and the students will certain appreciate your patronage. The Fine Arts Gallery at George Mason University is open until 9 on Fridays, or you can make a weekend appointment. If you just want a place to hang out, I like Jammin Java. You can just visit the coffeeshop part without paying for a show. And Tom Sietsema likes the quiet elegance of Ragafino, which is close to you.

Bethesda, MD: Help!; Gurus!; Help!;

My husband and I loathe football and we're sick of being stuck inside our shoebox of an apartment. Where can we go this weekend that isn't going to be blaring the Super bowl from a giant screen TV? Could we escape to the new American Indian Smithsonian or will it be packed? What about a nice football free lunch spot near the mall?

Thank you from the bottom of my football-hating heart.

Maura: You can definitely escape the Super Bowl, if you like. Aim to arrive at the National Museum of the American Indian and you should be able to at least pick up a same-day ticketfor later in the day. Keep in mind the museum opens at 10 a.m.! Nearby spots for football-free dining should include Teaism, Poste or Zaytinya.

5:30 reservation: Princess? Really? Ease up man. This dinner was obviously important to her, for various reasons, and it seems like she made that clear to her fella and he dropped the ball. Yeah she could have made the reservation herself, but maybe it was one of those situations where she would mention it and he kept telling her he'd take care of it.

And yeah, we've all heard that Valentine's Day is a "Hallmark" holiday and that we shouldn't need a certain day to celebrate love, but I kinda like to think of it as a day to be grateful for love, in whatever form it's in your life.

Bottom line: If it's important to her, let it be important to her. Same way the Super Bowl is probably important to her man. (or all men?)

Unfortunately, I don't have a good solution to the issue, but I'm sure there's a good compromise, like cooking dinner on the 14th and dining out on another random day.

Joe: Yeah, "princess" did seem kind of harsh.

Alexandria, VA: What is a single gal to do on Sunday? One who hates football with a passion (and can't even enjoy a SuperBowl party)? Are there any events going on for the football-averse?

David: Fritz and Rhome offered up three very nice suggestions in This Week in Nightlife. Portions Toll (featuring John Masters of local indie rockers Metropolitan) is playing at Galaxy Hut; dreamy local popsters Lejeune at the Black Cat; or, most exciting to me, an all-Bob Dylan night at Cafe Saint-Ex. That would be my choice, but I'm also the one who listened to Dylan exclusively for two straight months at one point when I was in college. And there's a Chocolate Festival in Old Town Fairfax, but that will be over before the football starts.

Washington, DC: I've heard there's a new Scottish bar/restaurant in DC. Any info?

Fritz: The Flying Scotsman?

Dupont: For the person interesed in framing, there's a place on Capitol Hill called Frame of Mine, or something like that, where you get a big discount if you make your own frame. They have all of the equipment and they show you how to do everything. Sounds like fun.

Janet: For the person thinking about Michael's for frames, here's another suggestion. Thanks for that!

Leesburg + Udvar-Hazy = bad idea: Dudes, do you know how far it is b/w Leesburg and Udvar-Hazy? Try at least 30 minutes. I think it's a dumb idea to do both on the same day. Do any of you REALLY know the area out there??? Or do you all live close-in???

Maura: Should I send him to the Wegman's to dine instead, dear? I think it's all right to drive 30 minutes to a nice dinner, don't you? Particularly if you're making a day/half day of it.

New to Arlington: I just moved to Arlington and I'm looking for some cool places to go out with friends on the weekend. I tried Iota and loved it. What bars (not necessarily for bands) are good to hang out at that I don't need to have my college ID with me? (I don't want to offend anyone but...)

Fritz: Galaxy Hut, Eleventh, Molly Malone's, Clarendon Grill.

Fritz: I like the Reef's new brew too, but do NOT tell me you just knocked Guinness or I'm going to have to slap you around.

Fritz: I didn't diss Guinness, which I just had the other night. But given a choice, I will -- and have -- taken Beamish or Old Dominion's Irish Stout.

Alexandria, VA: I am still lamenting the closing of Bullfeathers in Old Town!; We used to meet friends there on Tuesdays (for half price burger night.) Are there any other restaurants in Old Town that offer (cheap) specials? Thanks!;

Fritz: Cafe Salsa has an excellent list of drinks for $3 or less, plus half-priced apps. That's my pick.

Capitol Hill, D.C.: Gurus:

Where is a place you recommend taking a date after First Friday in Dupont--- e.g., a place where you may not need a reservation.

thanks

Maura: Kramerbooks is an easy spot -- brouse, grab a drink or a bite to eat. Bistro du Coin and Johnny's Half Shell don't take reservations, but they can get awfully loud. Pizza Paradis takes no reservations too. It's not as loud, but you'll definitely have a wait. Fritz suggests Uni for some good sushi. How does that sound?

'Maid in Dupont: Hi Gurus!;

I'm playing DC-hostess for a group of girlfriends coming into town for a bachelorette party this weekend. I was thinking about the "Club Hop" that starts at 1223 (but probably avoiding the roman numeraled establishment itself,) have any of you tried it out?

Any suggestions appreciated--as I usually try to steer clear of places that advertise with mass e-mails, I'm at a loss for picking a non-Lulu's venue where the veil headband will be a hit and we can dance away our favorite Bridezilla's last night of singledom.

Fritz: Yeah, it'll work. I think for a group, it's a good idea, esp. because if you don't like a place, or it's too crowded, you can always leave.

Washington, DC: Where's a good super bowl bar for a small group of twenty-something girls that want to go out and watch the game, but don't know all that much about sports and don't have a favorite team? Would we be out of place at a hard core sports bar like Mister Days or Rhinos?

Fritz: Check the list of Super Bowl events, but we're willing to bet that no matter where you go, you won't be made to feel unwelcome, and guys will be willing to help you learn the finer points of the game.

Alexandria, VA: Gurus, I need your help big time!;

My wife's birthday is Feb. 13th. Yep, the day before Valentine's Day. And of course, I can't combine them. I'm running out of ideas. I've got the 14th covered, but any help for her b-day would be greatly appreciated.

Anne: I don't know what you're planning for the birthday, so I'll suggest going to a concert or the theater. Here's all the performances on Feb. 13. Note: I would pick "Romeo and Juliet" -- which Post reviewer Nelson Pressley gave high marks -- over "Defending the Caveman."

The Going Out Gurus: With just over a week until Valentine's Day, I think we all learned something today. Thanks for stopping by, and please join us next Thursday for more going-out ideas and last-minute planning.
