Paul N. Pfeiffer Navy Officer

Paul N. Pfeiffer, 71, a former Navy captain, died of congestive heart failure March 20 at a hospital in Towanda, Pa., where he lived.

Mr. Pfeiffer was born in Springfield, Mass., and grew up in Baltimore. He attended Villanova University before entering the Navy.

He was designated a naval aviator in 1955. He was stationed throughout the United States and in Puerto Rico as pilot and a flight instructor. He also commanded patrol planes and served in Vietnam.

From 1968 to 1982, Capt. Pfeiffer was based at the Navy Yard in Washington and at the Pentagon, holding various technical positions with the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations and as commanding officer of the Navy Regional Data Automation Center. He was a specialist in computer technology with the military's command and control operations, and also worked in systems acquisition management.

He received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., and did graduate work at the University of Southern California.

His awards included the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Navy Commendation Medal. He retired in 1982.

Capt. Pfeiffer lived in Camp Springs from 1968 to 1975 and in Fairfax County until 1986, when he moved to Pennsylvania.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Jean Pfeiffer of Towanda; six children, Paula Tanis of Severna Park, Pamela Parker of Winchester, Va., Johanna Ehlers of Virginia Beach, Mark Pfeiffer of Fairfax County, Jennifer Pfeiffer of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Michael Pfeiffer of Lake of the Woods, Va.; and nine grandchildren.

Christine Meetze-Jones Secretary, Dancer

Christine Meetze-Jones, 90, a secretary to the principal of Fairfax High School and a competitive ballroom dancer, died March 27 at her son's home in Oviedo, Fla. She had Alzheimer's disease.

Mrs. Meetze-Jones worked at the high school from the 1950s until the early 1970s. She previously worked as secretary with her first husband's legal practice.

She was born in Manassas and graduated from Osborne High School.

She married George Oliver Botts; they moved to Arlington, then to the Cobbdale section of Fairfax.

She enjoyed throwing dinner parties, full-service teas and bridge parties.

Her first husband died in 1962.
