The District has many sports and recreational outlets for youth and adults. This is a list of some of the major clubs, recreation centers and pools throughout the city, including information about admission fees, if any.

The department maintains more than 300 parks, 75 playgrounds, 150 basketball and tennis courts, numerous ballfields and 33 swimming pools throughout the city. Most facilities are free to the public unless reserved for youth activities. Some minimal fees may apply. The department also coordinates recreational and educational programs, including sports leagues, arts classes, child care activities and senior citizen activities.

The nature center is the major information center and focal point for activities related to the park's natural and cultural history. Exhibits tell about the park's wildlife and forest. A library, open to all, has many books on natural history. A Discovery Room encourages hands-on activities. Guided nature walks and curriculum-based environmental education programs take place daily. Hours: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays-Sundays. Closed on New Year's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The planetarium is the only one in the national park system. It holds regular shows on Saturdays and Sundays at 1 p.m. for children 4 and older (4- through 7-year-olds must be accompanied by an adult) and at 4 p.m. for children 7 and older. Free tickets for planetarium shows can be picked up at the nature center's information desk.
