The 12-member elected board operates the county's public schools and sets general policy. Board members, who serve four-year terms, are elected from each of nine districts and for three at-large positions. Members are paid $12,000 a year; the chairman receives an additional $1,000 a year. Meetings are held in the board room at Luther Jackson Middle School, 3020 Gallows Rd., Falls Church.
