The authority oversees more than 387 parks and facilities on more than 22,500 acres. It operates recreation centers, known as RECenters, historic and nature sites, golf and miniature-golf courses and a farmers market program. The agency also offers hundreds of classes and special events.

The authority represents three counties and three cities, and oversees more than 10,000 acres, including 19 parks, the Bull Run-Occoquan Trail, the historic Carlyle House, five pools, three golf courses, six miniature golf courses and areas for boating and camping.

Located on the Occoquan Reservoir, the marina is part of the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority's 5,000 acres in the Bull Run-Occoquan Stream Valley. It offers fishing and boating.

The park offers scenic woodlands, trails and acres of bluebells in the spring. The park also is home to a public shooting center that offers sporting clays, skeet and trap, as well as indoor archery. The park hosts the annual "Miracle of Lights" holiday display.

Burke Lake is an 888-acre park that includes a 218-acre lake. There is fishing, boating (no gasoline-powered watercraft permitted), camping, a miniature train, carousel, outdoor volleyball courts, an 18-hole par-3 golf course, ice cream parlor, snack bar, picnic areas with grills and playgrounds. No swimming. Nominal fees for some activities.

Frying Pan Park includes Kidwell Farm, a working model farm typical of the early 20th-century farms found in Fairfax County.The park also has an indoor activity center, indoor and outdoor riding arenas, an equestrian trail and a country store. The park does not rent horses or provide riding lessons.
