Sherwood (13-7) is making its first state semifinal appearance, after P Brad Woodfield, C Kyle Obal and CF Chris Hart led Warriors through the difficult 4A West Region. They will meet Thomas Johnson (16-7); the Patriots have five players remaining from 2002 championship team, including 1B Garrett Hanselman.
Urbana (10-14) won four consecutive games to earn first state semifinal berth and will face C.M. Wright (16-5). Junior SS Mike Timm (.375), 1B Matt Woltz (.355), 2B Ryan Brandenburg (.391) and C Mike Cario (.348) key a balanced Urbana offense.
Centennial (19-4), the 2001 state champion, and Leonardtown (17-6) play in the second game. Centennial is led by Towson-bound LHP Jon Dupski (9-1) and senior C Dan Schillingburg. Leonardtown outscored its three 3A South opponents 29-5, and RHP-OF Flynn Stachowski won two games and went 7 for 10 with a home run in regionals.
Southern (14-7) is the only team remaining from Anne Arundel County and will play close to home against J.M. Bennett (18-2) in a 7 p.m. game at Arundel High. Southern's standout P-2B Brett Jones (.426) pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts in 2A South Region final. Liberty (18-3) and Eastern Tech (18-5) face off in the other semifinal.
Catoctin (15-8) will earn a third straight trip to the state final with a win today against Cambridge-South Dorchester (17-4). Will Delawter (5-3, 2.75 ERA) will start tonight for the Cougars and is the team's leading hitter (.530), along with C Zack Ausherman (.440) and 3B Kirk Simmel (.402). Williamsport (19-3) and Havre de Grace (13-8) will meet in the first game at McCurdy Field in Frederick.
