Wherefore Art Thou?

Claim to Fame: Part of this painting -- the skyward-looking putti, or cherubs -- has appeared on everything from posters to postcards, sometimes naughtily dangling cigarettes. They're just a smidge of the original, which features a cloud-supported Mary, Baby Jesus and saints Sixtus and Barbara.

(Detail of "Guernica" by Pablo Picasso - Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia)

What: Rene Magritte's "Empire of Lights"

Where: Brussels, at the Museum of Modern Art

Claim to Fame: Surrealist duality from the man who brought us floating bowler hats and the pipe that wasn't. Clouds float in a daytime sky over a dark scene illuminated by a lamppost. This version of the oft-painted work is supposedly the most complete.

Info: About $7. 011-32-25-08-3211, www.fine-arts-museum.be.

What: Caravaggio's "Beheading of St. John"

Where: Valletta, Malta, at St. John's Cathedral

Claim to Fame: This massive, moody work serves as an altarpiece -- many say it's the artist's masterwork -- for the Knights of St. John headquarters. Caravaggio's signature is in the red tide streaming from John's neck.
