Monica Mary Holland Substitute Teacher

Monica Mary Holland, 54, who worked as a substitute teacher at Alexandria's St. Louis Catholic School and was also active in the church, died of cancer May 24 at Georgetown University Hospital.

She was born and raised in Haddonfield, N.J. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in French from the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore.

After a year teaching fifth and sixth grade in Lindenwold, N.J., she married H. Michael Holland of College Park, who was an ensign in the Navy. For the first 13 years of their marriage, she accompanied him to duty stations across the country. They settled in Alexandria in 1986.

As their family grew, she dedicated her talents, generosity and sense of humor to the task of raising their seven children and supervising their education in Catholic schools in the Washington area.

In addition to her husband, of Alexandria, survivors include seven children, Monica L. Holland of New York City, Michael F. Holland of Monterey, Calif., and Theresa G. Holland, Martin A. Holland, Genevieve M. Holland, Thomas A. Holland and Anthony J. Holland, all of Alexandria; two sisters; and a brother.

Donald Thomson Means Linguist

Donald Thomson Means, 86, a government linguist who retired in 1972 as staff officer for the director of the National Security Agency, died of a stroke May 27 at Marshall Manor Nursing Home in Marshall, where he lived since September.

Before joining the NSA in the mid-1960s, the former Oakton resident worked for the CIA and the Army Security Agency.

Mr. Means, who was born in Jersey City, was a New York National Guardsman before entering the Army Air Forces during World War II. He flew 56 combat and operational missions as a navigator and bombardier with the 20th Air Force in the China-Burma-India theater.

His military decorations included the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Air Medals.

After the war, he received bachelor's and master's degrees in Russian from Middlebury College in Vermont. He briefly worked for the Army Security Agency before he was recalled to active duty during the Korean War.

He also served in the Air Force Reserve, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel at his retirement in 1978.

A student of genealogy, he volunteered as a genealogist at the Oakton branch of the Library of the Mormon Church and researched his Scottish and Irish lineage.

He attended Fairfax Presbyterian Church in Fairfax.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary Nasmith Means of Gainesville; two children, Robert Means of Oak Hill, Va., and Wendy Means of Front Royal, Va.; a sister; and four grandchildren.

Jess Hawkins GSA Law Librarian

Jess Hamilton Hawkins, 64, who spent 20 years as a General Services Administration law librarian until retiring in October, died June 15 at the home of a son in Eldersburg, Md. She had lung cancer.

Mrs. Hawkins, a former school librarian in Florida, settled in the Washington area in 1973. She then was a librarian at Bradbury Heights Elementary School in Capitol Heights.

A longtime Upper Marlboro resident, she moved to Westminster, Md., three months ago.

She was a native of Birmingham and a graduate of the University of Alabama. In 1962, she received a master's degree in library science from Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

She was a member of Good Shepherd Christian Church in Upper Marlboro.

Her husband, Don Hawkins, died in 2000.

Survivors include two sons, Hal Hawkins of Upper Marlboro and Christopher Hawkins of Eldersburg; a brother; and two grandsons.
