German Bobsled Driver Killed During Practice Run

German bobsled driver Yvonne Cernota was killed yesterday when her sled overturned in a curve, hit the wall and catapulted from the course in Koenigsee, Germany. She was 24.

The accident happened during a practice run. Stefan Grandi, who was riding with Cernota, suffered life-threatening injuries.

SPEEDSKATING: Chad Hedrick of the United States won the 5,000-meter gold medal at the world single-distance championships in Seoul in 6 minutes 34.37 seconds.

Anni Friesinger of Germany won the 1,500 in 2:00.48 seconds, followed by Cindy Klassen of Canada (2:01.21) and Jennifer Rodriguez of the United States (2:01.54).

SKI JUMPING: Roar Ljokelsoy of Norway won a title in Lillehammer, Norway, with jumps of 136.5 and 134.5 meters for his sixth victory this season.

FREESTYLE SKIING: Sweden's Jesper Brugge clinched the ski cross title by winning the specialty's closing event in Sauze d'Oulx, Italy.

France's Ophelie David scored a double triumph, taking the final event and the women's ski cross title.

CROSS-COUNTRY: Norway's Marit Bjoergen won a sprint in Pragelato, Italy, giving her a chance to overtake Italy's Gabriella Paruzzi for the overall title.

SNOWBOARDING: Finland's Risto Mattila beat countryman Toni-Markus Turunen in the half-pipe, and Australia's Torah Jane Bright edged France's Sophie Rodriguez in the women's event in Bardonecchia, Italy.
