IRON STOMACHS TAKE NEW YORK. Takeru Kobayashi of Japan aims for his fourth straight win at Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest, held every July 4 at Coney Island, Brooklyn, since 1916. Last year he ate 44 1/2 dogs; the lead woman, Sonya Thomas, swallowed 25. Those not on the competitive eating circuit can join in the Neat Eating Contest (for kids) and see the recently unveiled Hot Dog Eating Wall of Fame. For more conventional Independence Day fare, head to Lower Manhattan's River to River Festival for fireworks and a free Lyle Lovett concert.
