How did you get to where you are?

I started my career in the U.S. military. Traditionally in the military . . . you either start with a technical background or a more leadership-focused one. I took the leadership path. The scope of responsibility starts from leading about 30 people to where I finished with 14,000 people that I led and managed. You are responsible for budget, housing, feeding, training, equipping, making sure that the families are taken care of. So it's a huge management responsibility. From that level, I was in transition into more of a technical role, and that's where I became the director of all technical [areas] in the U.S. military command, control, communication and computers systems.

When I decided to leave the military, I realized that the skills I acquired there were transferable to the commercial world both in leadership and the information technology field. I made the decision to move to Oracle because of its strong leadership role. I was given the opportunity to establish a homeland security business unit at Oracle based on the skills I developed in the military and on the value that information technology can bring to homeland security. I had been there for six months when Oracle was asked by [Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld] if they would put me on a leave of absence to go to Iraq in an effort to transfer our role in governance to the Iraqis. Once I set the strategic plans in place, I returned to Oracle to continue in my position as senior vice president.

At that time, Dr. [J.P. "Jack"] London, chief executive and president of CACI, offered me an opportunity to expand my management capabilities to become executive vice president here based on what I had done in the past, and helping move this corporation forward to a more prominent and larger position in the marketplace because it's a very agile, fast-growing corporation. [The opportunity] gave me an increased chance to expand my horizon in private management and leadership.

The first thing you always do is seek out the best people that you can find for your organization. If you find the best people, you can basically go anywhere you want to go because they will take you there.
