Jets vs. Chargers

Saturday, January 8, 2005; Page D10

Play With Swagger. The Jets have backed down when they've faced the league's top teams. The Chargers are an upper-tier team, and they need to act like it by jumping on the Jets early and watching them wilt.

Spread the Wealth. The San Diego offense is virtually unstoppable when QB Drew Brees is using all his weapons, mixing the running and receiving of RB LaDainian Tomlinson with throws to TE Antonio Gates and WRs Keenan McCardell and Eric Parker.

Make Pennington Throw Down the Field. Jets QB Chad Pennington would prefer to dump the ball to receivers underneath, and his ability to throw deep has been particularly limited since he returned from a shoulder injury this season. The Chargers need to take the short pass away from Pennington and make him try to win the game with longer throws, which he probably can't do.
