The car was heading east on Old Keene Mill Road about 3 p.m. when it struck the truck, which was trying to turn left onto Huntsman Boulevard, said Mary Mulrenan, a Fairfax County police spokeswoman. The truck spun and hit another car, but no one in the truck or the other vehicle was seriously injured.

The driver and a passenger in the eastbound car were taken to a hospital. Mulrenan did not release the ages of the injured.

Man Fatally Injured in Alexandria Fire

Firefighters pulled a man from a blaze at a townhouse in Old Town Alexandria last night, but he died of his injuries at a hospital, city fire officials said.

Firefighters responded just after 10 p.m. to a report of a fire on the second floor of a townhouse in the 400 block of North Union Street. The blaze was extinguished in about 25 minutes, said Jane Malik, a fire department spokeswoman.

The man was taken to the emergency room at Inova Alexandria Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly afterward. He had not been identified as of early today. Malik declined to describe his injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Alexandria Weighs 8-Cent Tax Rate Cut

City officials in Alexandria will consider an 8-cent cut in the city's real estate rate to give homeowners relief from rising real estate assessments, Mayor William D. Euille (D) said yesterday.

Earlier this month, City Manager James K. Hartmann had proposed a 4-cent reduction in the tax rate when he presented his 2006 operating budget of $471 million. It included a spending increase of $38 million, up 8.7 percent from the current fiscal year.

Public hearings on the budget and tax rate will be held next month before the City Council adopts the budget and sets the tax rate May 2.

Warner Appoints Social Services Chief

Gov. Mark R. Warner (D) yesterday named Anthony Conyers Jr. as commissioner of the Virginia Department of Social Services, replacing Maurice A. Jones, who stepped down last week.

Conyers has served for 22 years as community services manager for James City County, according to a statement announcing his appointment. He managed the human services functions of the county government, including the divisions of community development, housing, social services, recreation, transit and extension, the statement said.

Warrenton Man Dies in Pr. William Crash

A 65-year-old Warrenton man died Monday shortly after slumping over the wheel of his truck and crashing into two other trucks in Prince William County, authorities said.

Arnold S. Russell died at Inova Fairfax Hospital shortly after having what doctors believe was his second heart attack of the day about 5:08 p.m. The first heart attack, doctors surmised, probably occurred moments before the crash near Balls Ford Road and Jacksonville Avenue, said Dennis Mangan, a Prince William police spokesman.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"When this happened to me, I thought and hoped that it would send a message to government to stay out of these decisions, these very heart-wrenching decisions."
