Carl Mintz of Washington says consumers also need to check on the

currency exchange rates charged by credit cards (Travel Q&A, Aug. 8). Mintz said in an e-mail that after charging a substantial amount on his Visa card during a trip to Australia, he was surprised at the additional charges. After several calls, the company finally acknowledged that it had miscalculated the exchange rate and credited his card $300. Mintz also discovered that Visa does not use the interbank rate when establishing currency exchange rates. For 15 of the world's major trading currencies, Visa uses a range of wholesale market rates from the previous 24 hours, which may be slightly higher than the favorable interbank rates used on large transactions between banks.
