Every Thursday at 1 p.m. ET, washingtonpost.com's Entertainment Guide experts share their best bets for local flavor, great dates and family fun. Got plans? Great. Need plans? Just ask. We have the skinny on the bars and clubs, concerts, kitchens, theaters and special events that keep life interesting. We're going out gurus, and we're at your service.
Of course, we're happy to answer questions about local entertainment, but we need to hear from you, too. Introduce us to the coolest DJ or the fastest bartender you've encountered. Sound off on the week's best concert or the city's best burger. Tell us about the best place to amuse little kids or a big art fan. Together we can plan fun ways to spend weekdays, weekends, dates and holidays. The pleasure is ours, and yours.
Each week a different guru will act as host or hostess, but the entire staff is at your service. If you're looking for more ideas, see the Entertainment Guide.

The Going Out Gurus:
I hope everyone's in a good mood today after that free Metro ride. And I'm guessing that many of you will want to make our holiday guide with its list of 52 New Year's Eve parties your first stop. (Those of you who have signed up for our email newsletter will be the first to read Fritz's complete New Year's Eve rundown -- broken out by places with no cover charge, live music, dance clubs and more categories.) Welcome back to Joe; Alexa, David, Fritz, Jen, Maura, Rhome and I (Anne) are here, too. Let's roll.

New York, N.Y.:
Will be arriving in Washington DC on Christmas Day. Do you know of any restaurants that will be serving a late lunch/early dinner? We will be three in total, including one child.
Alexa: Hotels are your best bets, I think. Morrison Clark has a five-course Christmas Day dinner from noon on. Corduroy is open that afternoon. McCormick & Schmick. Citronelle. But these are getting pricey. You don't specify price.

SOS from Downtown:
Help!; I've been invited to Swizzle at the last minute and while I am excited about the concept and the company, I have no idea what I should wear to this event. Sugestions?
Fritz: For Doc Scantlin's fantastic swingin' supper club, guys should wear suits or vintage swing-dancing attire, if you have it. (That means nice gaberdine shirts and slacks, not a bowling shirt or '50s lounge wear.) Women can wear a nice cocktail dress or dressy skirt and top. You'll want to look fabulous. Doc's wearing white tie or tails, usually.

Oh all-knowing gurus...I'm submitting early...does anyone know if Juste Lounge has anything going on for New Years? Thanks
Fritz: I spoke to Juste himself for our holiday listings, and he's not sure yet; they're doing something, he says, but the exact details aren't set.

Washington, D.C.:
A group of 10 of us are looking for a good brunch spot in and around the city (Metro-accessible, D.C. or Virginia). We are looking for endless champagne and decent food. Gabriel and 15 Ria are booked. Anything new and exciting out there? Also, we didn't want the $75 option at the Ritz...
Alexa: We always suggest the Club, the Bombay Club, because it's very swish, has bubbly without limits, a piano player and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Or the Tabard that I think is a la carte, but so worth it for the cozy factor.

Grinchville, USA:
Is anything....ANYTHING open on Christmas eve? A bunch of 30 somethings are looking for a bar/restaurant that will be open past 7 p.m....preferably in the city.
Fritz: Yes. We touch on this in the This Week in Nightlife column; I've been told that a number of places, including the Kimpton Hotel lounges (Rouge, Topaz, Helix), Cafe Saint-Ex, the Black Cat, the Reef and others will be open as usual. For whatever reason, there's a higher percentage of places in Arlington who are closing early next Friday.

Arlington, Va. - Christmas Gift Help!:
Submitting early due to a meeting but I need some help! I am trying to find a place that does adult (beginner) guitar lessons in the Northern Virginia area (Arlington, Fairfax, Vienna) as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend. Does any one have any suggestions? It can be through a private lesson or though a music store! Thanks so much!
Joe: Let's throw this one out to readers. Has anyone had a good experience with a music store or studio that provides guitar lessons in Northern Virginia? Send us a note if you have. Thanks.

Cleveland Park, Washington, D.C:
Hi there, GOGs! I never plan a weekend without referring to your weekly chats, and I'm hoping this weekend you can help me figure out how to keep a visiting friend entertained and in the holiday spirit (besides going Christmas shopping in Georgetown and hitting the bars in the evening to imbibe Christmas "spirits"). Can you suggest some free/cheap Christmas-oriented things to see downtown near the Mall this weekend? Do any of the museums, like American History, have any kind of seasonal holiday displays? Thanks!
Maura: If you're looking for full-on holiday displays on the Mall, I think the Botanic Garden can't be beat with their Home for the Holidays display. The National Gallery Sculpture Garden's ice rink is also a smart bet for a little festive outing. As for holiday spirits, I sampled the sugar plum cocktail at the Willard's Round Robin Bar this week. Minty and delicious. The hotel's all decked out for the holiday and is sure to fit the bill for your weekend.

Fairfax, Va.:
I have a friend coming to visit me from North Dakota for the next three weeks. I am looking for somewhere fun to go out to and drink this Saturday. I also would like to know what would be the hottest place in D.C. to go to for New Years Eve. I only want the hotspots, thanks Gurus!
Fritz: Hot is in the eye of the beholder, I think -- do you want the clubs, the black tie galas, what? I'd guess that Dream and H2O will be very popular (especially with the lower ticket prices this year), as will the black-tie Downtown Countdown and Euronet's Around the World gala at Jury's hotel in Dupont.

Clifton, Va.:
Someone last week asked about where to get a standing rib roast. Whole foods isn't bad but for Christmas dinner you should splurge. Try either Partlow's in Ashburn or Wagsal in NW. Both have real prime rib and can help you pick the right roast for your number of guests. Thre is a big difference between choice and real prime rib. Do not over cook this roast where ever you buy it. Medium rare is the maximum it should be cooked to. Medium or worse leads to a tough nasty mess. If you don't like blood maybe you shouldn't be eating meat. Mooo! Serve with Yorkshire pudding, a bottle of Opus 1, green beans with almonds, twice baked potatoes. For an appetizer either oysters on the half shell, shrimp cocktail or smoked salmon. For dessert, fresh berries served with a Pol Roger Winston Churchill, the best champagne out there. Rappers don't know squat about bubbly. Cristal pales in comparison. Total cost for dinner about a $1,000 to $1,500. I am having six for dinner for Christmas and this is the menu. Have the wine in the cellar. My butcher provides huge femur bones for my herding dogs for free! Christmas Eve dinner is a ham I smoked myself over the last year.
Alexa: Is that you Fritz?

The Nation's Capital:
Gurus.... I could really use some help here with my New Year's plans. I looked over the New Year's guide you've created and am still having trouble. Me and my friends are just looking for a nice D.C. bar where the cover isn't huge, perhaps below $50... we don't care if there is an open bar or not, but drink specials would be good.... no dive bars though. These kinds of places aren't really covered in the NYE guides I've noticed. The only one I could come up with is Helix/Rouge, but I did that last year and didn't like it too much... $5 for a Pabst... COME ON! Also, will the printed NYE guide in tomorrow's Post have anything more than the online guide? Thanks for any help, it's always appreciated!
Fritz: In the big Weekend New Year's Eve Guide (out tomorrow, but going into our system this afternoon), I have 19 bar parties that are free or under $50, and another two dozen or so in the $20-50 range. I'm noticing a lot more of these than I have in the past, which is a good thing -- I'm not a huge fan of crowded hotel parties, and I'd rather hang out at Stetson's (free), Fado ($5, with live music) or Ri-Ra (free, live music, $3 pints).

Please help!:
I don't know if this question is beyond the range of what you typically answer, but its worth a shot! I'd like to stop on my way home from work today to pick up matting supplies to frame a picture for a Christmas present. I have the frame already, I just need the matting materials. I've never done this before, and I want it to look good. Where can I go IN THE DISTRICT to find these supplies (I would love it if these things were inexpensive!) and maybe some helpful framing tips? Thanks, love the chats!
Maura: Utrecht at 12th and I springs to mind. Go ahead and call in advance (202-898-0555), if you like. Readers -- any more ideas?

Hey GoGs! Not sure who this question is best for... Going to Blues Alley tonight on a semi-blind date, and I have no idea what the attire is for the venue! I'm a gal, and I don't want to over or underdress, as I'd prefer not to look like a moron in front of someone I don't know... little black dress? suit? jeans and heels and a nice top? Christmas best? Help!
Joe: Hmm, is there any chance you can call him and find out what he's wearing. Blues Alley is a bit dressier than most live music places. I'd say jeans are probably out, but Christmas best is probably over doing it. If you get it totally wrong, feel free to blame it on us. Have fun.

Hi GOGs, you guys are great -- hopefully you can help me with this one. My boyfriend just had to give up his motorboat and is dying to go boating. Do you know of any places that will rent out motorboats for a couple of hours so he can ride around in the frigid water? I'm not talking canoes or rowboats, I'm in need of a real boat here. Thanks!
David: You can try the Freedom Boat Club, which has three area locations and should have what you are looking for. But they don't do simple renals; instead you pay an annual fee to become a member and then can use their boats whenever you want. It's not cheap, so if it's just a one-time urge, it's probably not what you want. If you're willing to take a bit of a drive, Belle Isle State Park down in Lancaster offers hourly motorboat rentals. Any other suggestions out there?

Lansing, Mich.:
Hi, coming to town for Christmas. Happy Holidays all!!!!!! I'm looking for a upscale lounge or nightclub that plays some soulful house music that caters to the grown and sexy. Any recommendations????
Rhome: Soulful house music has a really healthy presence here but most of the "upscale" clubs ignore it in favor of the usual well-worn mainstream hip-hop or the cheezy techno/euro stuff. If you want the heaviest soulful house experience, take yourself to Sanctuary or Red. If you need a few more trimmings to go along with the music, stop by Five on Dec 29 for the bi-weekly Ascension set. You're in for a treat with Stevie G on the decks. The local house community (dj's and a lot of really great dancers) keep the grown and sexy quotient filled. Osunlade was just there last night, right after having CRUSHED Sanctuary a few weeks ago.

For framing, the do-it-yourself place in Tenleytown is great. You choose the frame and matting. They do all the cutting, and you put it together. It's easy and saves you about 30% in labor, plus it's fun.
Maura: Well, our friend only needs the matting and some tips, but this could be helpful. Thanks!

St. Ex New Year's:
Do you know what St. Ex has cooking for New Year's? Cover for downstairs? Hopefully, not. Any ideas on Aroma? Any other places like that who aren't charging for NYE? Thanks!
Fritz: Saint-Ex will be open on NYE with no cover. DJ Neville Chamberlain is spinning downstairs (retro grooves, funk). There's a champagne toast, too. Aroma, like a number of other places (including Chi-Cha Lounge, Local 16, the Pour House and Topaz), has been booked for a private party on NYE. Sorry.

Oh beloved GOG's - you always have the right answers. Please help me with one more! I want to get a gift for my boss for Christmas. I was thinking a gift certificate to a restaurant might be a nice idea (if you have other suggestions, feel free!) so he could take his wife. I'm thinking maybe $50 or so. My problem is this: he lives in Takoma Park, I live in Arlington. Though we work in D.C., I have no idea what restaurants might be the most convenient for him (I'm such a Virginian). He and his wife are a pretty "hip" couple (in their early 50's) so I'd like to have the gift certificate be to come place a little more "adventurous" than your average steak house - know what I mean? I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions you might have! Thanks a million!
Alexa: Equinox has them and that would be a nice treat. Jaleo has them too, minimum $25, and that way your boss could use it at any of their three locations -- Bethesda, Downtown or Crystal City. Then there's the Clyde's gift "coins" that are cute and they have loads of different locations. Bit steaky though, I suppose.

Bethesda, Md.:
Hi Gurus, Can any of you give some comments about Cafe Europa in Bethesda? I've heard it's kind of loungy and they play hip-hop on Friday and Saturday. Is this true, and is it a nice place to get a drink and listen to some beats?
Fritz: Here's a piece I did on Europa a few months ago. It's nice and loungey early on. I've heard hip-hop and club music there, but they swear it's not a regular thing. Anybody been in the last month or so?

Silver Spring, Md.:
I have decided to boycott family holidays this year. Are there any bars, public houses or saloons in D.C. that will be open on Christmas day; preferably one showing the NBA games. Thank you for your time.
Joe: Hello Silver Spring. Hope whatever is leading to the boycott will be resolved before Christmas. But if not, the best bet for watching ball on Christmas day is to check with your favorite place and ask them. Fritz says the sports bar at the Grand Hyatt at Metro Center is worth a call. The ESPNZone (or whatever that place is called) will likely be open as well. Again, for smaller places, you'll have to call ahead.

Beginner guitar lessons:
Mr. Ed (seriously!;) teaches a beginner guitar class that is a good intro to the guitar through the Arlington County Parks and Rec. I think the next session (weekly classes) starts mid January.
I took the beginner last fall and am moving up to intermediate.
Just remember to tell Mr. Ed, "Go Red Sox!;"
Joe: OK, thanks. We're happy to pass that along.

Hey Gang, haven't sent you a question in ages but I hope you can tackle this one. My fiancee & I are heading out New Year's Eve with another couple (late 20s) and are looking for a good spot. We did Crush last year and had fun, but don't need to go back to Adams Morgan. We were thinking Clarendon Ballroom but think that might be too dressy. Clarendon Grill or Mister Days seemed like good options and wanted to get your thoughts, or at least other suggestions to get some fun, dancing and not outrageous pricing. Thanks!
Fritz: Neother Clarendon Ballroom or Clarendon Grill are advertising themselves as black tie optional, so I'm not sure how dressy it's going to be. I imagine some people will come in tuxes, but not all -- as borne out by the photos from last year on the Gonzo's Nose Web site (they're the house band). Clarendon Grill seems like a good option to me without breaking the bank.

After seeing "Closer" and reading a few Natalie Portman interviews regarding her role, I am completely intrigued with taking a pole-dancing class. Not looking to quit my day-job, or perform for an audience, just interested in learning a few moves. Do you know of any establishments on the less sleazy end of the spectrum where my friends and I could give it a try?
Jen: And welcome to this week's edition of "Got Plans ... For Porn?"
Just kidding, Arlington. Actually, there was an article about this phenomenon in Style last year. Can't say I know where you can try this in the Washington area, but maybe some of our rump-shaking readers know. Anyone? Smart aleck comments about Camelot's are discouraged.

Washington, D.C. :
I am going to Off the Record for the first time tomorrow. I know it's one of your favs, but I cannot recall what you recommend. Any suggestions?
Fritz: Classic cocktails. Let bartender John Boswell work his magic -- I like his wet martinis. You know, wet, as in "they actually have vermouth in them." But tell him what you like and he can whip something up.

New York, N.Y.:
So I'm headed home to D.C. for Christmas next week. It's been about a year since I've been back, and I'm curious - could you recommend, say, the three best new places (restaurants, bars, anything else really) that have opened in the past year? I want to get together with some friends I haven't seen in a while and would like to go somewhere fun and new.
Rhome: That's tough without some more specific criteria but my instinctual reaction without too much analysis would yield Wonderland (neighorhood joint), Pearl (upscale nightclub) and DC9 (low-key live music venue).

Silver Spring, Md.:
Hey Gurus. I'm a big fan of your helpful and (normally) accurate information. I say normally because in the Nightlife Agenda, Fritz and/or Rhome wrote "the amazing Dogfish Head Worldwide Stout, which clocks in at 18 percent alcohol (that's 36 proof -- almost as strong as most rums and vodkas)"
Most rums and vodkas are between 80 and 100 proof (40-50% alcohol) which is signficantly stronger than 36 proof. Granted you don't normally drink pints of vodka, so I agree that an 18% beer is nothing to be trifled with.
Quick question: we have two couples going to the Pietasters show on New Year's Eve. Any suggestions for a nice but low-key dinner in the U Street area? Ethnic is fine, but we have one quasi-vegetarian (fish OK) and cocktails will be required. Thanks and happy holidays!
Fritz: Um, right. Sorry about that. Alcohol always becomes fuzzy math for me and Rhome. But for dinner, I'd say the Islander meets all your requirements -- veg-friendly, outstanding tropical cocktails, etc. Another option could be the new Opera, the new Italian place that replaced Kuna. I've heard good things but haven't been yet.

Gurus: Two very pretty girls, 22 and 24, want to go out in Georgetown on Friday. We want to go to a nice bar where there are ample members of the opposite sex to attract. Maybe get a bite to eat first. Seems like guys never talk to us when we go out, they stare plenty, but never come up to us. Where are the guys with guts?!!!
Joe: Aren't Georgetown bars loaded with "very pretty" girls? You need to go somewhere where there are lots and lots of ugly girls so you'll stand out a little more.

Penn Quarter, Washington, D.C.:
I just paid way too much for my condo next to the MCI Center, and thus need some advice on inexpensive happy hour specials in my area. Got any tips on where to go to save some dough on drinks and munchies?
Fritz: Ella's for free pizza and $2-$3 beers. The District Chophouse for house-brewed $2.50 pints. Juste Lounge for deeply discounted martinis and the occasional free buffet.

Please, please help me. I cannot remember the name of the restaurant/hotel in the city that offers a dessert/chocolate bar in the evening for about $25 a person. Can you recall the name? I've done several searches on the internet but came up empty. I want to give a gift coupon to this event as a Christmas gift to an unadmitted dessert-freak. Thanks and Happy Holidays.
Alexa: It's the Capitol View atop the Hyatt, but I'm afraid to say I think they are still closed for renovations.

Golden Triangle, Washington, D.C.:
Any "Apprentice" finale parties or venues for this evening? Also my best friend is in town so I want to show him D.C. for the evening. Very important as I only get a "free pass" every so often..
David: It doesn't look like there are any official "Apprentice" parties. Just not the same excitement and buzz as last year, probably because the Donald has done a great job of completely overexposing himself, and also every single contestant this season was unbearbale. And, really, does Jen have any chance of winning? Another idea for tonight would be Fado, with This Week in Nightlife faves Scythian.

Hi Gurus, A few weeks ago, I believe that you mentioned that two hotels in D.C. were planning something for New Year's Eve where you could go to both throughout the evening for about $20. Do you have guys have any additional information about that? I believe that one of the hotels that you mentioned was Hotel Rouge. I am looking for an upscale, but not too crowded environment for New Year's Eve with some folks that are at least in their late 20s. Any suggestions?
Fritz: You're right, and it's in our database; if you type "Rouge" into the Entertainment Guide search box, it's the first event that comes up. I went to this party two years ago and it was a good time. Rouge and Helix are a short walk, so you can check both out before deciding where you want to be when the free champagne is handed out.

Tea for Three:
I'm looking for a place to have high tea (or at least something more than just a pot of tea) with two of my friends. All females, mid-20s to early 30s. We're looking for something sophisticated and fun, as a change from the holiday madness
Maura: There are plenty of fine places for high tea. The Mandarin Oriental is one of my new faves, but the Four Seasons, Mayflower and Jefferson are reliably delicious -- and decadent. Enjoy.

Hey GOGs, A large group of friends are all going to see the Nutcracker at the Warner on Saturday at 7:00 and we're looking for a good festive place for either an early or late dinner around there. Something that won't break the bank. What can you recommend? Thanks!
Jen: It might be fun to try Butterfield 9. If you can't afford to spend the money for dinner, you could always eat at the bar, which should be less expensive. Chef Geoff's is also just across the street from the Warner and fairly festive.

Fritz: Uh, I haven't heard much -- Blue Gin and Mie N Yu are an arm and a leg. Smith Point is co-sponsoring the Downtown Countdown. I called Chadwick's but didn't get an answer in time. I heard there was a party at Rhino bar, if that's your scene.

New Year's for those under 21:
Hey all. I don't really want to do a crowded hotel party this year. I'd like to go to a chill bar (or something ladback, in general) that's either free or has a reasonable cover. The problem is that my girlfriend is 20. Any places you recommend that admit those under 21?
Fritz: So far, there's the Black Cat, 9:30 Club, an all-night dance party at Singapore Bistro (going until 7 a.m.), and Platinum. Of those, I'd say the Black Cat might be your best chance.

Am thinking Blue Gin. Also, any recommendations on the best shopping (besides Georgtown and Mazza Gallery) for a girl making out on the conversion from British pound sterling to the dollar? Thanks!
Fritz: Blue Gin sounds good. Get there early.
And is there really a more American experience that going to Tysons Corner for Xmas shopping? Given the current state of the pound, she can probably do her shopping for the next two Christmases this year.

I am meeting some girlfriends for drinks after work Thursday night, and would prefer a hotel bar - nice and quiet, with a place where we can sit down and drink. Do you have suggestions for cozy hotel bars either near the White House or in Rosslyn? Not looking for anything too expensive, either.
Thanks!
Fritz: Near the White House: Off the Record (in the Hay Adams hotel across the street) and Le Bar (two bocks away at 15th and H). Those are excellent choices. In Rosslyn, skip hotel bars and head for Continental, the groovy retro pool hall that serves up cheap beers and decent Mai Tais. (Actually, there's not much else there I can recommend.)

A few weeks ago a reader wrote in about purchasing Nationals gear. Well my dad's really pumped about the possibility of baseball back in D.C. and so last week I decided to buy him some stuff from the MLB's Web site. Do you think they'll take it back if the Expos placement here doesn't pan out?
David: Well your Dad surely isn't too pumped anymore. As for merchandise, the official store here is already shut down. A quick check of the MLB site shows that you can still order Nationals gear, so if you really want some, do it now while you still have the chance. The possibility exists that you can order now and they won't ship it, but that's the only hope you have, for now at least.

Going to International Spy Museum, need a good inexpensive restaurant for a first date, that is within walking distance or Metro-accessible. Thoughts? Also need an after-museum and dinner activity, thinking a poetry night or something mellow. Any thoughts?
Maura: CC, near the Spy Museum, you might try Zaytinya or Jaleo for small plates at a reasonable sum. If you're staying in the area, I'm not sure about poetry readings afterward, but you could settle in for after-dinner tea at Teaism, where they do have poetry readings sometimes, but not on weekends, I believe. You could also just have a quiet after-dinner drink at Poste.

Actually, since Blues Alley is a listening club, folks come from or on their way to a million differnet places. On any given night, I've been there and people have been in tuxes, suits, sweaters and khakis, and jeans and tees. Best to call and see what your date is wearing.
Joe: Thanks for more dress tips.

re. Rehoboth/Lewes:
In Rehoboth, checkout the Dogfish Head brew pub - beer is excellent, food is very good too (though it's a little pricey for lunch). Also Big Fish Grill - they really know how to cook fish, and it's very fresh, though the crowd is extremely whitebread.
Alexa: Oh thank you. Yes.

Good Afternoon! Going to the Improv tonight and have never been before, does anyone know how the "two menu item" minimum works? Does it include drinks, or only food? Thanks
David: It's any two items -- could be two drinks, a drink and a burrito, whatever. Keep in mind that if you arrive early and eat there you'll get a better seat. Enjoy Jim Gaffigan, he's pretty funny.

Dear GOGs, I just can't get excited about paying $100+ for New Year's Eve at one of my normal (coverless) haunts. Could you tell me which bars you know of that will be operating as normal on Dec. 31?
Fritz: Because I love y'all, here's a few:
Adams Mill, Austin Grill Silver Spring (with live music), Asylum, Bailey's, Buffalo Billiards, Saint-Ex, Continental, Fado, Galaxy Hut, Halo, O'Faolain's, R.F.D., Ri-Ra, Stetson's, Tonic, Wonderland ...

Going to Annapolis tomorrow night and haven't been in a while...have any new bars opened recently that I should hit? Do you know of any good live bands that will be playing? Thanks!
Fritz: I don't think anything downtown has opened -- well, there's the new outdoor garden patio at the Sly Fox, but that's best when it's covered with wisteria in the summer. Head over to Eastport and hit Boatyard Bar and Grill and Davis' Pub, if you haven't.

Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C.:
I wanted to get my boss a present, but have no idea what to spend and what to get. I was looking to spend around $30? Any ideas for gifts?
Maura: Stay with something not too personal, Dupont. If your boss drinks wine, a nice bottle is an easy -- if not so original -- answer. You could always do a plant, something like an orchid or amarylis. With a boss, I don't think you need to worry about being super creative, just thoughtful. Gurus Alexa and Janet were online last week with more gift ideas.

GOGs - if you know anywhere with a selection of champagnes by the glass, send it my way. Thanks so much. Love the chats though I usually have to read them later.
Fritz: Ellington's on Eighth has a few by the glass, as does Firefly.

I am 46 and my wife is 36. We're looking for a list of New Year's Eve packages. Preferably somewhere with a diverse, classy, dressy crowd, an overnight room with soul, R&B, reaggae and jazz music.
Fritz: Two great choices for you would be the Positive Black Men Coalition's party (with Rhome's hero Roy Ayers), Soul Patrol and DJ Captain Fly; or the Inner Caucus Gala at the Washington Court Hotel (co-sponsored by WHUR). Both offer the music, upscale atmosphere and crowd you're looking for, plus that all-essential hotel room.

What can you tell me about the New Year's events at Jaleo- I know that it's a set menu, $75 but that doesn't include drinks. Worth it? Not? Help!
Alexa: Yes, I think it'll be great. There's to be flamenco dancing too.

Nationals Gear:
You can still (I think) buy Nationals stuff at Out of Left Field in Union Station. Hey, at the very least they will be collectors items!
David: Yeah, non-MLB affiliated stores that already have Nats gear probably won't just box it up and wait for the word. There's money to be made, after all.

re: Sushi & other cuisine:
for the question about restaurants w/ good sushi and other alternatives- I'd recommend Spices in Cleveland Park. I like everything I've tried there, including the sushi. Their menu includes Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Indian food- and it isn't too expensive.
Alexa: Indeed.

GOGs - I love your chat, but very rarely get to catch it live. I've been meaning to write in about Eleventh for a couple weeks. Read really good things about the place on your chat and decided to organize a Friday happy hour for about 12 friends. We got there right around 5 p.m. and the place was dead. We grabbed some chairs and ordered a lot of drinks and food. Apparently we made the mistake of moving a couple chairs around to accomodate our large party and was harassed by the manager/owner (not sure which) five times about taking up too much space. Now I know we were a large group, which eventually swelled to 20 people, but I seriously cannot comprehend this manager demanding we move chairs when we were literally the only ones in the place. He kept saying other guests would be coming, but since when do you harass your existing customers that are eating and drinking a lot? I want to like this place - it has a great vibe and good decor - just what Clarendon needs. But I am seriously considering not going back because of the manager's attitude. Any thoughts on why they would treat customers this way?
Fritz: You know, I've been to Eleventh several times and never run into anything like this -- and I have to see I've received a few e-mails about the place, almost entirely positive. I don't know what would justify this behavior if everything's as you say -- were you blocking the aisle? Having been there last weekend, I'm trying to visualize a place in that bar where 20 people could sit together, and it would be really, really tight. Also, were you taking up all the seats and leaving tables empty?

Hi. I'm trying to figure out what to get my boyfriend for Christmas and thought a beer-making class that we could take together might be fun. I've searched the Internet but can't find any classes. Do you know of anything like this? Thanks!
Fritz: Oh, hit the Shenandoah Brewing Company in Alexandria. They'll take you through making your own beer, step by step.

Oh wise Gurus, Where can a small group of us go out dancing to celebrate my birthday this Saturday? What's the scene like at Red? I like techno, trance music, and fun, top-40-type mixes. Preferably somewhere Dupont-ish or downtown. Thanks!
Rhome: Red is primarily an underground house music club, although they have some different types of events during the week. It's a cozy secluded box that conducts people and musical energy really well. Sound system is massive. It's pretty bare-bones but definitely not ratty. It's two best attributes are the dj's and the diverse clientele.

Washington, D.C.:
Hello Gang of Gurus. It's my 25th birthday this weekend, and I am dragging my friends out for the annual "you have to go dancing with me because it's my birthday" adventure. This year I am interested in something a little more low-key than, say, Platinum or Dream. In fact, I am not into the corporate clubs at all. I was thinking Blue Gin would be a great place to try, but I wanted to make sure that there would be dancing and not just a DJ spinning for a lot of people who do not want to move. Also, can we avoid the cover if we get there earlier in the night? If this sounds like not a great idea, do you have anything better up your sleeves? Thank you thank you thank you thank you.
Fritz: Blue Gin doesn't have a lot of room for dancing -- head around the corner to Modern if you want dancing in a hip lounge in Georgetown. The Blue Room would be another option.
