Pins 'Popping Up Everywhere'

Thursday, January 8, 2004; Page C02

We're pining for pins. So thank goodness they're back. Materializing everywhere from boutiques -- amid the printed T's and evening dresses -- to museum gift shops and Grandma's jewelry box.

They've landed on skirts, handbags, dresses, shoes and winter hats.

Glass flower, jeweled vintage, jade accent, palm cluster and starburst pins, $48 each at Banana Republic stores or 888-BRSTYLE. Magpie flower pins, $45 (small) and $50 (large) at What's In, 11010 S. Joyce St., Arlington. Below: Pamela Barsky vintage scarf buttons, $2 each at National Museum of Women in the Arts gift shop, 1250 New York Ave. NW. (Photos Julia Ewan -- The Washington Post)

Many of these are your grandmother's pins -- compact and jeweled, Victorian-influenced cameos or insects (think rhinestone-encrusted bumblebees and ladybugs). Some are totally not: extra-large, fabric-influenced and meant to take over an outfit, not just complement it.

"The development of the pin over the past year and a half has really come full circle. Pins are popping up everywhere," says What's In manager Jocelyn Steele. "As we enter the mid-winter months, people want to add some color and freshness to their wardrobe. These pins are a great way to revive an old outfit without spending a fortune."
