So Cool in Clarendon. Bring Your Dog.
Thursday, June 24, 2004; Page H03
Take two globetrotting couples with home furnishings stores in Puerto Rico, add a factory in Turkey plus almost 8,000 square feet of retail space in Clarendon. Mix well.
The result? Vesta Home, which opened last week, featuring contempo seating, lighting, rugs, curtains, china and accent pieces from this country and Europe.
The palette is neutral -- from ivory to sable -- but those who crave color can order bright-hued fabric for upholstered pieces.
Just inside the door is the Zen-simple atelier of floral designer Michael Lanni, who sells beautifully displayed cut stems and arrangements.
Vesta, named for the Roman goddess of home and hearth, is the brainchild of Turkish brothers Sabi and Jak Benardete, and their wives, Lichelle and Georgie. They design and will customize sleek furniture of Macassar ebony, oak, wenge and chrome, made in their factory near Izmir. Rugs also can be made to order: modern, flat-weave wool kilims, furry sheepskins, soft wool-poly combos.
And prices? "The lower range of high-end," says Sabi Bernardete. Sofas using Vesta fabric -- linen, silk, leather, wool, faux suede -- run from $3,800 to $4,000. Dining chairs start at $359; a sensational Gunter Lambert iron and glass German chandelier is $5,000; a 39-inch glass vase, $375.
Well-behaved dogs are welcome (to test a pooch bed, perhaps?).
