Here's to Julia Child

Saturday, August 14, 2004; Page A20

I hope that there's butter in heaven.

It was a sweet sadness to hear yesterday that Julia Child had died in her sleep at age 91. She went out well, just as she lived and ate well. In our food-fad-crazy times, memories of Julia Child adding just a tad more butter and refilling her wine glass should help us all to remember how to enjoy our food, not fear it.

I moved to Paris at age 27. I couldn't speak French, and I couldn't cook.

When I moved back to the United States three years later, I still couldn't speak French, but I could cook, thanks to Julia Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" and a bilingual cookbook published by the Volunteers of the American Hospital of Paris.

Au revoir, Julia. Your distinctive voice will be missed.
