Mourning Signs With Miami, May Play Tomorrow

Wednesday, March 2, 2005; Page D04

Alonzo Mourning signed a contract and then practiced yesterday with the Heat, the team with which he spent eight seasons -- a stint twice interrupted by kidney disease. He's expected to make about $325,000 for the rest of the season, based on a prorated share of the $1.1 million minimum veteran contract.

Mourning may be in uniform tomorrow when Miami visits New Jersey.

• SHAQ IS BACK: Heat C Shaquille O'Neal returned to practice one week after spraining his left knee in an awkward tumble against the Bulls. O'Neal said he plans to play tomorrow in New Jersey.

• SOLD: Detroit mortgage magnate Dan Gilbert assumed majority ownership of the Cavaliers, taking over a once troubled NBA franchise saved by LeBron James.

MOVES: Gary Payton, acquired by the Hawks last week at the trade deadline in a deal that sent leading scorer and rebounder Antoine Walker to the Celtics, was waived. Payton never reported to Atlanta and sought a buyout of his contract. . . .

The Hornets waived C Dale Davis and F Glenn Robinson just days after trading for the veteran players.
