Legislative goals announced yesterday by the Family Foundation of Virginia include the following measures. Many conservative legislators in the state have expressed support for such proposals.
Same-sex marriage: A high priority is passage of a legislative resolution that would lead to a state constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman. Virginia has a law that bans same-sex marriage but conservatives say the ban should be permanently embedded in the Constitution.
Abortion: Issues include eliminating public funding for Planned Parenthood, providing anesthesia to fetuses before a second- or third-trimester abortion and upgrading safety standards at abortion clinics.
Internet filters: The proposal, similar to the federal Children's Internet Protection Act, would require public libraries that receive state funds to install Internet filters to prevent children from being exposed to lewd and inappropriate materials.
