ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) -- A helicopter crashed into the Potomac River just south of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge late Monday, authorities said.
One person has been rescued from the river, according to Sgt. Rob Moroney of the Maryland State Police. Searches continued early Tuesday.
The initial report of a downed aircraft was called into the Alexandria's 911 communications center at 11:14 p.m.
A spokeswoman for the Alexandria Police says an off-duty volunteer firefighter reported seeing a small aircraft hit the water.
Alexandria Police have been searching the area near Jones Point, on the west bank of the Potomac.
District of Columbia Harbor Patrol is also reportedly involved in the search which is being concentrated south of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.
