College Football

Detroit Lions assistant KevinHiggins was hired yesterday as the coach at The Citadel, which went 3-7 last season.

Higgins, the third coach at The Citadel in the past five years, coached quarterbacks and wide receivers for the Lions last season.

He replaces JohnZernhelt, who was hired as a New York Jets assistant.

Before joining the NFL, Higgins coached Division I-AA at Lehigh from 1994 to 2000. He led the Mountain Hawks to three straight NCAA playoff appearances.

College Basketball

Miami fired women's coach Ferne Labati, three weeks after the Hurricanes completed a 16-loss campaign and missed the postseason for the first time in four years.

Labati posted a 303-195 record in 17 seasons at Miami, including 12 winning seasons, six NCAA berths and three WNIT appearances.

However, her team lost five of its last six games.
