The Going Out Gurus:
Hello, everyone. It feels like spring break here at Guru Headquarters, as Alexa and Anne are on vacation and I (Fritz) am feeling slightly jetlagged. But Kate, Rhome, Maura, Jen and Janet are here to take your questions. We're excited about the Kite and Cherry Blossom Festivals. You?

What is the best place to get some good ol' French Toast?
The Going Out Gurus: Tuck into true blue French toast at any Cafe Deluxe, Sundays only until 3 p.m. The McLean branch is closest to you. Fresh Fields and Marvelous Market sell it by the slice, covered in almonds, sticky with sugar.
Readers, two questions: Where would you send Woodbridge for F.T.? And, do you find it strange that I like mine with salt and pepper? -- Kate

Hey Gurus! Where can I rent a bike in Va. or D.C. that is close to the Mount Vernon Trail? Any suggestions?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Downtown, it looks like the physically closest bike rental location is Big Wheel Bikes's Georgetown store. It's just across Key Bridge from the Mount Vernon Trail. The store is also close to the Capital Crescent Trail and the C&O Canal Towpath. Lynette

Love your chat, Gurus. My friend told me that she heard about a hotel restaurant in D.C. that offers an all-you-can-eat chocolate bar. Is this true? Where and when? Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: The Ritz downtown was offering an all you can eat chocolate buffet Friday and Saturday evenings in February. As far as I know they didn't extend it, which in my mind is a good thing (communal dipping is cause for trouble). Sorry. -- Maura

Atlanta, Ga.:
I am not sure if this is the proper forum, but I have not seen one of my best friends for 35 years (since our high school graduation). We are meeting Friday, April 2 at the Capitol Hilton, at 11:00 a.m. We have tickets to the cherry blossom parade on Saturday and plan to "see D.C." (or what we can of it) before heading to our respective homes. I love D.C. and what a happy day this will be, I am hoping for lots of cherry blossoms, warm weather and a great parade. We have both been to D.C. many times (but obviously never together), and have seen the sights...what is something most tourists don't usually have on their agenda, that we could do after the parade?
The Going Out Gurus: Sounds like a terrific start to the day, Atlanta. With the warmer days we've had of late, the cherry blossoms should be at full peak next weekend. After the parade (and street festival), you might enjoy exploring a smaller museum -- the Renwick or the Textile Museum (just around the corner from the Phillips). After that, why not sit down for tea? The Jefferson Hotel is one of my favorite spots, but you might also try the Mayflower or the Four Seasons (call ahead and reserve). Enjoy. -- Maura

Le Bar?:
Hey!; Planning to check out Le Bar on Friday after work around 7pm. What's the scene like?
The Going Out Gurus: Well, if you want "scene," Friday's the best night to check out Le Bar. It's a cool, Art Deco space that's really popular with local suits and the hotel's Euro-centric guests. The cocktail list and service have gone slightly south since last summer, but if you can grab one of the sofas, you're set. -- Fritz

Hello!
This question is for Maura - Maura, please, how do you pronounce your name? My husband and I are seriously considering naming our baby Maura, but are unsure how it is correctly pronounced: Mar-ah, or More-ah. Or is it your choice? Also, how do you like being named Maura? Any hidden pitfalls we should be aware of?
Thank you so much!!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Washington. What a sweet question. The name is pronounced more-ah, just like Laura, but with an M. Now that I'm older I love the name because it's from my parents, is slightly different, but not too odd. I never minded it too much growing up either. I had to tolerate my big brother calling me "Maura the moron," for a number of years, but really, when you think about it, with another name it could have been something far worse. Good luck! And congratulations on the baby! -- Maura

A Friend in Washington D.C./Va.:
Greetings oh great Going Out Gurus! My cousins are coming to town this weekend and are bringing their two young kids (ages 3 and 1). I'm excited to bring them to the zoo tomorrow and the kite festival on Saturday. Any other suggestions for where to bring these tykes? More importantly, what are some good kid-friendly restaurants in D.C. - particularly downtown? Thank you kindly!!!
The Going Out Gurus: Glad you asked, despite your uncertain origins.
You might find that after several hours at the Zoo and the Kite Festival on Saturday afternoon (registration 10 a.m. - noon; flying from noon to 4 p.m.), that a place to sit down and rest, have a drink is in order. Of the restaurants downtown in D.C., Ella's Wood Fired Pizza, Teaism in the Penn Quarter, or weirdly, Gordon Biersch -- it's quite family friendly during the day -- might do.
As for other activities, if it's not too crowded, the Hall of Mammals and the Insect Zoo at the Natural Museum of Natural History. Their cafe ain't half bad place to stop and have a juice. Walk through the lobby of the Willard Hotel, it's always spectacularly dolled up during cherry blossom time. -- Kate

Arlington, Va.:
I need to do some serious wardrobe updating (the 10-year-old stuff that still looks decent needs to be replaced!), and I think I need an expert-type to help me out this time around. I'm looking for lots of business and comfy casual clothes, and maybe also a suit or formal business pant/skirt separates. I tend to prefer solids over patterns, and classic styles/lines, but I also like things that show a little creativity (e.g. the new embroidered flowers on a solid skirt trend). For reference I've had good luck at AT Loft before (just don't like their colors right now), and Nordstrom's has been hit or miss. While I'm willing to spend a lot total, I also want to be able to bargain hunt. I guess I'm either looking for super helpful (not pushy) sales staff, or someone like a nutritionist but for clothes who can tell me things like "these are good colors on you" and "this style will help make you look taller." In some ways the latter is sounding better, but I don't want to end up spending so much on advice that I have nothing left for clothing. Any suggestions?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Arlington,
It sounds as if you need a really good salesperson or a wardrobe consultant. The former would, of course, be your best bet because wardrobe consultants don't come cheap. Elizabeth Gibbens, now a salesperson at Saks Fifth Avenue in the designer department, used to be a wardrobe consultant. She might be able to give you some pointers.

Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hey Arlington, I've seen quite a few places getting ready for this weekend's warm weather -- can you believe it might hit 70? -- but you're going to want to call first and make sure everything's open. That said, I know you'll be able to hit Gazuza, the Reef, Clarendon Grill and Lauriol Plaza, all of which should have young-ish, lively crowds ready to welcome the return of the sun with a drink or two. -- Fritz

I can't believe I am writing this but I feel old when I go out! I am a 37 year single woman who likes to go out for drinks and/or dancing, but feeling ancient when I walk into a bar and the average age is 26. Is there any place you can recommend where I would be surrounded by urban professional men and women in their 30s to early 40s? Thanks..
The Going Out Gurus: Are you having good conversation with the people around you? Are you enjoying the music? Are you finding it lacking because you can't relate to the age group (I have that problem more and more myself) or is it actually a good time but you're just feeling self-conscious? If it's the latter, I'd advise you to squash that internally as best you can. If the former, you'll have to give me a few more clues (music tastes?) to steer you to something. How about the happy hour at Maxim tomorrow? Partner dancing is probably the best option for mature folk. A good swing/salsa/tango night will have a wide variety of ages from college to 40's, 50's and up. Have you seen the ultra-smoove old school Cuban cats get down at a hot salsa spot? All the ladies line up to dance with them. Try Five tonight for salsa. - Rhome

Ok so what is the real benefit of joining these museum groups for young professionals? I'd like to get out be more culturally active-but not sure which museum group or other organization to join. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Washington, many join these groups purely for socialization, but I think it's only worthwhile if you have some interest in the museum/zoo/organization. If you go often enough, the free admissions and/or discounts alone will make the cost of membership worthwhile. You can attend many of their events without being a member, so I would try a few on for size before making any decisions. Maybe some reader members have advice? -- Maura

I don't know if I'm asking the right question to you guys. My best friend's brother passed away last week from a tragic accident. So he(my friend) is now out of town attending his brother's funeral. I plan to pick him up this weekend at the airport. What restaurant would you recommend us for lunch? Preferably a place where we could just sit and talk (although I still don't know what to say yet)
The Going Out Gurus: You are a good friend, D.C. You two need somewhere quiet but not totally empty. Have you been to Dish, the small restaurant inside the refurbished River Inn in Foggy Bottom. The food is American: meatloaf, fried chicken, grilled trout served elegantly but it's not formal. The bill depending on your order might reach $40 bucks, but this is a special, somber occasion. When you make your reservation, ask to sit near "the dog." Another plus, Dish has valet parking available at all times because of the hotel. It's only $5. A table at the Tabard Inn might be nice too. -- Kate

Last week I submitted a question asking whether you guys knew of any recreational women's bball leagues in the Northern Va area but you guy thought I meant baseball rather than basketball. So do you know of any women's basketball leagues in the area? Been looking but have had no luck. Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Sorry Reston, it's spring and all I (Lynette) can think of is the crack of the bat. There are summer basketball leagues for men and teens, but there don't seem to be any for adult women in Northern Virginia (Chatters who know differently please chime in) during the summer. There may be a league in Montgomery County starting in June (their parks and rec staff said to call 240-777-6870 about mid-April to confirm) if you don't mind the drive. If that doesn't work, you can find a league in Fairfax County or Arlington County through their parks and recreation departments next fall or winter. There may also be a fall or winter league through the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia.

The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Dupont. The "Jeopardy" tapings are April 3 and 4 at DAR Constitution Hall. According to Washington's "Jeopardy" hotline, (that's 703-647-1533) to get tickets, you need to go to any local IHOP, fill out a form and mail it in. Of course, given the late date, you may not have time to do that. I tried call Constitution Hall's event line, but it doesn't provide any info about getting tickets to the tapings. Check www.wjla.com (a k a channel 7, which airs "Jeopardy" locally) to see if there any other updates. Or try the IHOP route and see if that works. Good luck. -- Jen

I wanna go go-kart racing, but what's up with the new place charging $25? Know of any $1/lap places? Am willing to drive an hour or so to get there. Thanks
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Washington, the cheapest rates I (Lynette) can find are at the Crofton Go-Kart Raceway in Maryland. They charge $2.25 a lap for however many laps you feel like driving. You can also buy a book of 25 tickets for $50 to reduce your cost to $2 a lap or a book of 50 tickets for $90 ($1.80 a lap). If you go during the week, call 301-261-6566 to confirm their hours, but they'll definitely be open this weekend from 2:30-9 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and 3-7 p.m. Sunday.

My Mother takes a night class at Georgetown on Tuesdays and for her birthday I wanted to give her either a gift certificate (or some earmarked money) to a local bar so she can go out for drinks after a hard night of classes. Any recommendations for Georgetown bars where you can have casual drink that aren't too undergrad-oriented? Cheers!
The Going Out Gurus: I had a coffee this morning at the adorable Cafe Bonaparte (1522 Wisconsin Ave., 202-8830). They received their liquor license last Friday and offer a full bar. I'm not sure if they have gift certs, but this lil' business strikes me as so accomodating and all-ages that I wonder if they wouldn't help you make a wonderful gift for your mum.
Cafe Bonaparte is directly across the street from Marvelous Market. Perhaps a gift of a sandwich before each class would work too, though wouldn't we all prefer a glass of red and a crepe with friends? -- Kate

Hi all!
I have 5 friends from college in this weekend... it's an interesting mix of people 2 marrieds, 1 engaged, 3 singles. The marrieds don't get out much and hate getting bumped into. The singles would like some yummy drinks and some eye candy but not a meat market atmosphere. aAe there any loungey type places in the Dupont area where we might be able to reserve a table for drinks only (doing dinner at 8 elsewehere)...
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Around Dupont, you'd do well to consider the lux bar at Topaz Hotel (try to snag one of the corner booths for your party) or upstairs at Gazuza - probably on the patio. Not sure about reservations, but it's worth a shot. Savino Cafe has yummy drinks, but the crowd near the bar (where you'll want to be) can be hit-or-miss. I'd say you and the singles may want to sneak off to Cafe Citron for mojitos and a youngish crowd, but that would be wrong of me; it's often crowded, but hey, bumping happens. -- Fritz

They've got some interesting island style drinks too. We're just waiting to see what promoters settle in for regular events. They have to hook up with the right folks to attract the right clientele to the space. The one-off's we've been to (and heard about) have been nice. Hi Gurus. Maybe you or some other chatters can answer my question. We have tickets to Chris Rock tomorrow night, and Constitution Hall is like a black box in terms of show information. The ticket says 8 p.m. Is that doors open time or show time? Is there an opener? When will Rock go on?
And, since I'm asking, any idea when the new lounge in Woodley is planned to open?
Thanks, y'all kick it week after week.
The Going Out Gurus: Constitution Hall is a tough nut to crack for info, I (Jen) agree. Here's what I can tell you: 8 p.m. is showtime. Yes, there's an opener. For more, read the info I'm about to post from a fellow reader who saw the divine Mr. Rock last night.

The Going Out Gurus: I think it might even be cooler, AM. The New New Vegas Lounge looks a lot nicer: exposed brick walls, a burnished dance floor, a larger, more accessible bar and no more loud carpet. Still playing lots of R&B, Motown and '50 blues on Friday and Saturday nights for a really diverse crowd: new neighborhood residents, older folks, couples hand dancing. Watch out for the $10 cover, though -- even if you're in early for happy hour, they come around and collect it once the band starts, and your choice is (a) pay up or (b) leave. Friends of ours just found out they're expecting, and we want to throw them a fun, funky couples shower this summer. Problem: our place is tiny. Any ideas where to have one in the area? We'd love to do a picnic area in Rock Creek Park, but the ban on alcohol puts a slight damper on the idea. Think maybe 20 to 30 people. Thanks for your help!
The Going Out Gurus: What are you chicken? I've enjoyed full-service picnics in RCP (not that I'm proud of tickling The Law). But as you are obviously more mature than I, what about calling the tiny but oh so sweet L'Enfant and seeing if you couldn't book the inside for a party on a Saturday in June from say 7-9. It's non-smoking inside (plus for the baby), have salads, terrific soup and sammies all reasonable priced (plus for guests) and house wine including rose by the carafe (plus for me!).
If you were willing to host a celebratory dinner for your friends on a Tuesday or Wednesday night, you might be able to book Buck's Fishing and Camping's long community dining table. Impossible to do on any other night I'm told. Sharing that table with a big group of friends feels very special.
Picnic lunch at Oxon Hill Farm Park would be terrific. The view of Washington is great, the farm animals are ambassadors of cute. -- Kate

I've got an friend doing a book launch party during the Unity Convention, so someplace around the convention center would be good but not necessary. She's looking for a bar or club space for 100-200 people that would provide a DJ, have a cash bar, and maybe some food options from about 6-9 p.m. on a Thursday night. She's from New York, so hipness is a prerequisite. Suggestions?

The Going Out Gurus: So, we saw "Unity Convention" and Rhome and I started singing "UNITEEEEE!" a la Rick James-via-Dave Chapelle. Then we all started quoting "The Dave Chapelle Show." Sorry. Just had to share.
Anyway, Thursday night is a tough, but I think they should head right across the street to Juste Lounge. They've got two levels, a decent kitchen and an extra-long martini menu. It's very hip and has a funky vibe that suits the neo-soul and hip-hop the DJs spin. -- Fritz

Since they have lots of stuff, I was thinking that theater tickets are a great choice.
But to what show? Would prefer a show in Baltimore but D.C. might have a better selection.
I noticed that there is a new (old) theater in B'more, The Hippodrome, wonder if they have any productions that might be interesting but could not find any specific info. (The Sun's site is not very helpful to me).
Would love any suggestions from the team or chatters.
Thanks!!!
The Going Out Gurus: The Hippodrome is supposed to be a beautiful venue, so that's a good choice. There are a number of musicals coming there: "Les Miserable," "Mamma Mia!," "Phantom of the Opera" and "Thoroughly Modern Millie" play there this year. Personally, I'd be inclined to hold out for "Oklahoma" or "Little Shop of Horrors," both of which are coming next year. You might also explore shows at Center Stage, too. If it's possible, I recommend getting a gift certificate rather than tickets to a specific show on a specific date. That way you don't have to worry about scheduling conflicts or trying to guess what their taste might be. Chatters, of course, feel free to chime in. -- Jen

The first time I went to Kaz Sushi Bistro, George Clooney was at the table beside mine. I think he was in town for the filming of HBO's K Street.
The Going Out Gurus: Nice tip, thanks. I also saw Mr. Clooney and his pal Steven Soderbergh (and inadvertently ended up in an episode of "K Street") last year at the Kennedy Center, another potential celeb-spotting venue. Yes, that's my claim to fame: Being in the background for a half-second on an HBO show that nobody watched. -- Jen

Hey Guru's - need some help with a tricky, but hopefully good situation. I met a nice guy who lives out of town awhile back and he's coming to visit for the first time this weekend. I'm looking for a good place to have a relaxed and fun dinner and somewhere to go out afterwards. Don't want anything to romantic, but not too loud either. Maybe even somewhere to catch some March Madness? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hi Woodley, for dinner you might head to Matchbox, Jaleo or Cafe Atlantico. Afterwards, you could catch some basketball on the tv's at Gordon Biersch or upstairs at District Chophouse (pool's an option there too). Have fun. -- Maura

I am dying to find a really good and savvy tailor who can recommend (and do) alterations. I live in Old Town, but anywhere in the area is fine. Gurus, do you or the readers have any advice?
The Going Out Gurus: Hi, Alexandria:
A couple of suggestions.

So this might be my last spring and summer in D.C., and I'm thinking about starting an aggressive campaign to take full advantage of the benefits of living here while I can. My thought was to start with the Kite Festival this weekend, and then move on to Cherry Blossoms and who knows what else.
Gurus, you are a crucial part of this plan. Please start by telling me if there will be food at the festival, and if not where I should get some lunch Saturday before heading to the Mall (also, can I bring my dog?). Then, please advise on a place for Sunday Brunch before hitting Eastern Market (and don't say the food stand inside EM cause I've done that already and I need new experiences!)
Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: There will not be food (because I refuse to count hot dog vendors) at the Kite Festival this Saturday. Maura and I like the bento boxes at Teaism, she recs the chicken, I like the salmon. Portable, a bento and a salty oat cookie and a chai shake might provide the easiest answer for "with dog" eating. There's a bench outside of Teaism on R, plus there's always seating and weirdo-watching in the Circle.
Dogs are allowed but not always warmly welcomed at the Kite Festival. It attracts so many families with strollers that you might, if your dog is bigger than smaller, get some dirty looks. I've seen it happen, not pretty.
As for Brunch, I still find the Hill lacking. If you want to brunch lavishly, Bistro Bis in Hotel George and a reasonable walk from EM offers three-courses for $24.95. Something less tony but good, how 'bout lunching at Cantina Marina on the SW Waterfront? They open at 11:30, so you might hit the Market first. -- Kate
Silver Spring, Md.:
Hello Gurus,
Can you suggest inexpensive places to eat around the E Street Cinema on a Sunday? It has happened twice now where we went on a weekend to see a matinee and were stuck wandering around looking for a place to eat that wouldn't break the bank and still be tasty. Thanks.
The Going Out Gurus: I feel like we get this question almost every week, and I'm never sure how to answer because there are so many different places to choose from in that area. Depending on what you order, Chef Geoff's shouldn't break the bank, nor should John Harvard's. Both of those are right near the Warner, just a couple of blocks away. There are plenty of other options nearby, too. If you can't afford a dinner entree at some of these places, you can always eat at the bar and get appetizers. That should help on the budget front. -- Jen

Hey GOGs, you're my best hope for answering this question. I'm an early 20s male and I think there's a lot I never learned about how best to shave -- what kind of razor is best for my face, etc. Besides finding some Queer Eye guy, is there anywhere I can go where they'll tell me about this stuff, like the male equivalent of a cosmetics counter at Macy's? Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Hmm. Have you tried The Grooming Lounge?

Hi GOGS,
My friend's birthday is coming up and a group of us are thinking about going out and getting a couple of hotel rooms near some bars so that we can crash after going out. We were thinking Dupont or Adams Morgan, but we are in a rut and tend to go to the same places. Any ideas for where we should stay and what bars nearby might be good? We aren't too picky, and like places with a fun vibe that aren't so packed that you can't move, or so noisy you can't talk... but we also don't want the extreme opposite either.
The Going Out Gurus: Good for you for trying to break out of your rut. Sadly, we're not sure what the rut is. Going to the same old pitcher nights, or drinking too many Manhattans? Anyway, we've come up with a few places with specials that you may want to consider. What about the Jury's Hotel on Dupont Circle? They've got a fantastic pub in the hotel (Biddy Mulligan's) and there's so much near by, from sleek lounges like Gazuza to the Big Hunt to dancing at Cafe Citron. The River Inn in Foggy Bottom is cool, and offers access to all the bars of Georgetown (Mie N Yu, Modern, Rhino Bar, Degrees Martin's Tavern, the Guards, etc.)

re: French toast:
I agree the "classic" French toast at Silver Diner is very good, but 2 other outstanding types are at the Carlyle Grand in Shirlington (soft in the center and ridiculously good), and at Teaism (sort of a fried doughnut thing going on). But if you go to Teaism don't hog the seats (pet peeve)!;!;!;
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, Carlyle Grand makes many good things. Their bread comes from Best Buns next door, so you could try and recreate at home.

L'Enfant:
If you're going to recommend that people try to rent that place out, you might as well recommend that they bring their own chef. The food there is terrible, and I'm not the only one who thinks so. Take a peek at the reader reviews.
The Going Out Gurus: I have never had a poor experience there. Had a giant bowl of mushroom soup and a glass of vino a few Sundays ago and it was really pleasant. Chaqu'on a son gout; but always good to have the feedback. Honest. -- Kate

Any word on Murphy's of D.C. reopening after the fire? Too much longer and I'll be thin and rich.
The Going Out Gurus: Oh, that we all had that problem, Alexandria. It's going to be a while, as they're still working on the joint. At this rate, Constantine's new place might even be open first... -- Fritz

Posting early because I won't be around during the chat. What would you guys recommend as the most special/romantic/classy/memorable hotel to stay at in the city? There are obviously quite a few choices, including upscale like The Willard and The Ritz or more trendy like Rouge. If you lived locally and wanted to create a truly spectacular and unforgettable night capped off with a night at a local hotel as described...where would it be and why?
The Going Out Gurus: While you couldn't go wrong with the Ritz or Willard, I might try something smaller and more intimate, say the afore-mentioned Jefferson Hotel or the Hay-Adams. -- Maura

Cafe Bonaparte:
How come it's not in the search engine? Is it brand new? Can you give a brief blurb about it? THis is the second time I've heard you say nice things about it, and I would like to check it out. It's a lunch place, I'm assuming? Next to Cappuccino's Pizza?? Thanks for all the info.
Oh, another good Gtown place that isn't there either is the News Cafe.
The Going Out Gurus: Now that it has it's liquor licence and with it, a new identity, Cafe Bonaparte should be searchable in the next few days. Crepes are on the menu for lunch, dinner, dessert. It only seats about 24 and the vibe is cool. - Kate

Posting early as I have a meeting. The kite festival this weekend: Are we able to bring our own kites and fly them too? Will there be kites for sale? Or is it simply a kite display? It's supposed to be so gorgeous out this weekend, it looks like that could be fun! Thanks!
The Going Out Gurus: Yes, you are welcome to bring a homemade kite, register between 10 and noon and fly it for prizes.
"Kites of the World" is the theme of the Smithsonian Kite Festival. In addition to displays by "kitists" there will be an emphasis on international kite games like "Rokkaku" warring kites from Japan. It's free and if the weather is on our side, Saturday should be gorgeous. Sunday is the rain date. -- Kate

Hi GOGs!
What is up with Tequila Beach - has anyone been? I keep getting e-mails about the place and want to find out what it's like and if it is worth a night out there.
Thanks for your help!!
The Going Out Gurus: I went briefly two weeks ago before heading off on vacation, and honestly, it's like a little bit of Ocean City right on F Street. Same owner as Baltimore's Baja Beach Club, so you have the girls in bikini tops selling overpriced beers out of ice buckets on the corner of the dance floor, fairly cheesy hip-hop music large bars with a coral-reef theme and a tiki bar upstairs. What really amused me were the huge mechanical sharks hanging from the ceiling and the and a huge stone Tiki head carved into the wall -- they look like props from the old Scooby Doo Mysteries. I don't know that I'd spend a night there, but it may be a good spot for cheesy fun -- and a much better option than Polly Esther's around the corner. -- Fritz

Re: G'town Bar Gift Certs:
I know that Garrett's offers gift certificates. Laid-back and divey, it's a great place to take a load off, grab a drink and a bite to eat. On Tuesday nights I've found it to be a mixed crowd and the college kids don't really take over the place. And if they do, it's never before 11pm or Midnight.
The Going Out Gurus: Garrett's, I think, can skew young. But if mom's game?

Rocky Horror:
A few months ago you gave information on theaters that have showings of the Rocky Horror Picture show. Is anyone still showing it?
The Going Out Gurus: Indeed, they are. Visions shows "Rocky Horror" every Friday at midnight, and the University Mall theater in Fairfax shows it every Saturday at midnight. -- Jen

I was looking for a hotel bar near Dupont Circle. I can't remember the name of it but I think it's in a hotel called Westin? Can you help me with a name and the address if you know what I'm talking about? I think they also serve food. Many thanks. I enjoy your chats.
The Going Out Gurus: Are you thinking of the Fairfax Lounge at the Westin Embassy Row?

Submitting early b/c of a meeting- My best friend recently came out and would now like to visit for a weekend and hit some bars and clubs. Where are some places near Dupont that we could go where he (shy, but fun) could meet people and I (straight female) wouldn't be the only woman, but where we could both have a great time? Thanks so much!
The Going Out Gurus: Try places like the Lizard Lounge, Cobalt, Chaos, FoodBar D.C. or Larry's Lounge, which are all gay but straight-woman friendly, and it's relatively easy to meet folks at all of them. I've not seen many women at say, JR's or Titan, but I'm not a regular, so it'd be hard for me to say. -- Fritz

Hey GOG's!
A group of friends & I (girls & guys) in our mid-to-late-20s are looking to go out in Georgetown tomorrow night, but we haven't been out in G'town in years. Where to go? We'd like to go to a bar where we can lounge & chill, but would also like a dancing option. Would Modern fit the bill? What is that place like nowadays? Or Mie N Yu? Any other suggestions for places in that area?
Thanks--you guys are awesome and always add sunshine to each Thursday afternoon!!
The Going Out Gurus: Modern, yes, if you can get there to snag seats or don't mind paying for table service. Great dancing to hip-hop, old-school and house music after a rocky start. Mie N Yu has less dancing but a cool bar/lounge scene. We also like the bar at the Ritz-Carlton (Degrees) for its drinks and classy lounge atmosphere. Maybe hit that before moving to Modern? -- Fritz

Okay - Would you PLEASE help a girl who fairly recently broke up with her boyfriend? Looking for a place to go out with friends this weekend in D.C. or NoVa. Ideally a place that attracts the professional types, but not the metrosexuals of D.C. THANKS!!
The Going Out Gurus: Sweetness, metrosexuals are everywhere there are professional types. If they're not wearing archi-specs, it can be difficult to separate the two. Perhaps you and your friends can sort the wheat from the Chads at Vermillion in Alexandria, the new Sette Osteria in Dupont or pick up Jason Lewis ("Smith" from "SatC"). He'll be H2O tomorrow night. Find more like ideas in This Week in Nightlife, a column only 50% metrosexual. -- Kate

Hi! I have a friend from high school coming in tomorrow who hasn't been to D.C. in many years. She's very excited about the whole D.C. thing, so I'd like to take her out somewhere tomorrow night that will capture the D.C. scene (politico, diplomat, something like that) but will still be a fun evening for a couple of girls in their late twenties. Thoughts on bars / restaurants / other activities?
The Going Out Gurus: I'd say a Capitol Hill bar crawl is on the cards. She can watch the staffers flirting and "networking" under "Nixon's The One!" posters at Capitol Lounge, move on to the older (but cool) Hawk and Dove for a bit of eavesdropping, stick a head in the Tune Inn, select a glass of wine from the long list at Charlie Palmer's and watch for Congressmen, have a martini at the very cool Lounge 201 and wrap up the night at the Hotel George's Bistro Bis, Washington's original boutique hotel bar, and one that still attracts international guests and lobbyists. That should give you some ideas, I hope. -- Fritz

3 adults and 1 child were going to hop on the Metro, walk around the Tidal Basin to see cherry blossoms, maybe check out the kite festival. Anywhere nearby to eat?
The Going Out Gurus: More than ever before. I recommend the cafe at the Holocaust Museum. The Smithsonian has improved their food services in Natural History and American History of late, there's a McDonalds in the National Air and Space Museum if your child is well and truly picky. Potbelly downtown on 14th might have a long line, but they spread a PB and J that will satisfy a child. Have you seen our Cherry Blossom guide? Did you print out our print-out? Tis very useful, especially for families.
Sounds like you should join us next Wednesday at noon for Got Plans with Kids. It's just like this discussion, only smaller. -- Kate

Planning on checking out Kotobuki, the sushi place that Tom reviewed in the magazine this week, tomorrow night and was wondering if you guys knew of any place, reasonably placed and nearby the restaurant, that my girlfriend and I could go listen to some jazz or blues. Thanks guys.
The Going Out Gurus: A few short blocks away is the Starland Cafe, which offers blues, jazz and doo wop every Friday night. Nice mellow, older crowd and a decent bar scene. The music usually starts around 9, which is perfect for after-dinner entertainment.
That wraps up another week of Got Plans. Thanks for joining us, and we'll see you next week.
