Boston Adds Some Depth to Back Court by Re-Signing Veteran Payton

Gary Payton returned to the Celtics yesterday, one week after Boston sent the guard to the Hawks in a trade for F Antoine Walker.

Payton, 36, re-signed with Boston after Atlanta waived him. He had been traded to the Hawks at the NBA trading deadline.

Payton, dealt from the Lakers during the offseason, is averaging 12.1 points and 6.1 assists, bonding with teammates and providing valuable leadership for the team's young guards.

PACERS' MOVES: Indiana placed F Jermaine O'Neal on the injured list (sprained shoulder) and waived F Michael Curry. The team also signed veteran free agent F Dale Davis, a former Pacers standout waived by the Hornets earlier this week.

INJURIES: The Bulls placed rookie F Luol Deng on the injured list (sprained ankle) and he is expected to be sidelined for two to four weeks. Chicago activated G Frank Williams to take Deng's place on the roster. . . .

Grizzlies F-C Pau Gasol, the team's leading scorer who has been on the injured list since Jan. 25 (injured foot), was cleared to begin individual workouts. . . .

The Raptors placed F Eric Williams on the injured list (sprained calf) and activated F Pape Sow.

PISTONS SIGN CAMPBELL: Detroit signed veteran C Elden Campbell, 36, who played with the Pistons last season but was traded to the Jazz on Jan. 21, then waived and signed by the Nets. Detroit also placed G Horace Jenkins on the injured list (back spasms).
