WHATEVER FLOATS YOUR DRAGON. More than 40,000 spectators are expected to see a 75-foot-long dragon and the Shaolin Temple warrior monks kick off the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in Queens, N.Y., Aug. 7-8. The 100-plus teams compete in numerous heats with up to 18 rowers, a drummer and a steerer in each boat; the U.S. champion team will be crowned Aug. 8. Cheer them along while brushing up on your calligraphy skills, creating a Chinese painting and seeing Chinese, Peruvian and Mexican song-and-dance acts at the lakeside entertainment area. Can't make it to the event itself? Catch on-site practices 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 1-2.
