TIA FOSSETT, 28
JOB: Manager of events, employee programs and community outreach at Metro
SALARY RANGE: $60,000 to $80,000
EDUCATION: Bachelor's of business administration in marketing.
WHAT SHE DOES: Fossett and her team of three plan and execute all of Metro's media and ceremonial events, such as the openings of three new rail stations later this year. She sets up catering, takes care of VIPs and coordinates with Metro's many departments. "There are 10,000 employees at Metro and, I swear, I have to work with about 8,000."
WOULD YOU WANT HER JOB?: "You just have to be prepared for anything," warns Fossett, who carries bottled water, pliers, a wrench, tape, scissors and a box cutter, just in case. During budget crunches, she cut cake (and sliced it thin) in the absence of a caterer and brought in her own Christmas decorations.
HOW YOU CAN GET HER JOB: The best training for event planners is the hospitality industry, since hotels are "a one-stop shop" for catering, sales and audio-visual services (Fossett previously worked for Marriott).
