Food Filmmaker Les Blank Puts The Scent In Cinema

"The other part of his story is recycling and composting and wanting to get right with nature," Blank explains. "When I saw what he was doing I started composting my kitchen scraps. . . . It's kind of interesting watching things decompose, going from finished food to breaking down, with all the colors, shapes, forms and odd smells."

It seems fitting that Blank, whose life's work has been dedicated to extolling the pleasures of cooking and eating, should evince an interest in the next stage of the process; let's just hope that if he ever gets around to making a documentary about compost, he decides to skip the Smellaround.

Burden of Dreams and Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe will be shown Friday at 9 p.m. Chicken Real , Garlic Is as Good as Ten Mothers , Yum, Yum, Yum and the work-in-progress about tea will be shown Saturday at 4 p.m. Les Blank will be present at both screenings, which will take place at the AFI Silver Theatre, 8633 Colesville Rd., Silver Spring.
