Larry Hughes came out on fire, squaring and firing over any helpless Bulls guard who managed to put a hand in his face. Chicago tried to match up with size, but it was no use. Scott Skiles put 6-foot-1, 185-pound Chris Duhon on the 6-4, 205-pound Gilbert Arenas. Meantime, 6-3 stickman Kirk Hinrich was no match for the 6-5, sinewy and quick Hughes. The Wizards could barely miss, shooting 73.7 percent. They led by only six, but the crowd had a deadened feeling to it, as if the energy from Games 1 and 2 had been siphoned from United Center.

Coach Eddie Jordan's philosophy seemed simple: Get the Big Three off early and wait for the role players to kick into gear. By quarter's end, Hughes, Arenas and Antawn Jamison had combined for 28 of the team's 34 points. Even bad shots by the Wizards were going in. And there was a concerted effort to gang rebound. The team's 10 rebounds were shared by six players. Meantime, the Bulls were rebounding poorly.
