SAN FRANCISCO, May 5 Washington Nationals Manager Frank Robinson has been taped by television cameras during games talking on a cell phone, a practice he said he has stopped.

Speaking after Wednesday's 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium, Robinson said he kept the phone in the dugout so that he would be able to stay in touch with General Manager Jim Bowden should there be injuries that necessitated roster moves. He admitted that during one game at RFK Stadium he accepted a brief personal call, but said he wouldn't bring his phone in the dugout anymore.

"I'm surprised I haven't heard from the league office," he said. "But I'm not bringing it out there. I don't need it."

Last August, when the team was the Montreal Expos, television cameras focused on Robinson, now 69, as he appeared to doze off during a game. Robinson was furious at ESPN for showing the clip. He said at the time that he was drowsy after taking two allergy pills for a sinus infection, and that he never completely closed his eyes.

Surgery for Sledge, Osuna

Outfielder Terrmel Sledge (hamstring) and reliever Antonio Osuna (shoulder) will each undergo surgery. Sledge's procedure will be Friday in Los Angeles to repair his hamstring, which tore off the bone. Osuna will have a tear in his right shoulder repaired next Thursday in Washington.
