Shaquille O'Neal's absence was obviously the story of the night, but the bigger issue in this quarter was Washington's effort to get back on defense and prevent the easy baskets Miami got during the opening period of Game 2. The Heat turned the ball over eight times. Alonzo Mourning doesn't have O'Neal's presence, but he did put a smile of the face of former Georgetown coach John Thompson, who watched the game from Section 107, by dominating the lane early. Mourning's rebound and thunderous dunk gave Miami a 14-9 lead and led Coach Eddie Jordan to burn a timeout at the 5:18 mark. At that point, Jared Jeffries had attempted twice as many shots (four) as Gilbert Arenas and Larry Hughes combined (two). Defensively, Hughes threw a new wrinkle at Dwyane Wade by picking him up well above the three-point line and forcing him to drive exclusively to his right. O'Neal's absence allowed Brendan Haywood, and then Michael Ruffin, to creep up and cut off Wade once Wade made his move.
