Washington is one of six finalists for the NCAA Frozen Four ice hockey championships for one year from 2009 to '11. If Washington is chosen, the Naval Academy would be the host institution and the games would be played at MCI Center.
Members of the NCAA site selection committee visited Washington on Thursday and yesterday to inspect the site. The group organizing Washington's bid, the Greater Washington Sports Alliance, along with the Capitals, Naval Academy and District officials, will make a formal presentation to the NCAA next month in Indianapolis. The Division I Men's Ice Hockey Committee will then forward its recommendations for 2009, '10 and '11 to the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet. A final decision will be announced in late September.
The 2006 event will take place at Bradley Center in Milwaukee, with 2007 at Savvis Center in St. Louis and 2008 at Pepsi Center in Denver.
The other finalists for 2009 to '11 are Boston, Detroit, Philadelphia, Tampa and St. Paul, Minn.
"I think Washington is actually a natural choice because what we are trying to do is grow the sport of hockey in this area," said Bob Sweeney , president of the Greater Washington Sports Alliance. "This is the next step. This is a great destination for this event. The fan experience would make it the best Frozen Four ever. We could take the Frozen Four to a new level, a level it's never been before."
